What can Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses do?
Oakley Meta is the sport branch of Meta’s camera-glasses family, and it has two models: the HSTN, a rounder everyday frame, and the Oakley Meta Vanguard, a wrap-around shield built for training. Meta announced the Vanguard in September 2025 at $499 with an October 21 launch, and on September 30, 2026 it was still listed at that price. Meta’s own summary is that it is built “to go wherever your workouts take you.”
In practice, the Oakley Meta Vanguard does five things:
- Records from your point of view. A 12 MP camera sits in the centre of the frame with a 122° ultra-wide view and what Meta calls medium image stabilisation.
- Plays audio outdoors. Open-ear speakers in the temples, which Meta says stay usable in winds up to 30 mph.
- Answers questions.Meta AI responds to “Hey Meta” for weather, stats, starting and stopping video and general questions.
- Reads your workout. It links to compatible Garmin watches and bike computers and to Strava.
- Handles calls and messages through your phone, hands-free.
There is no display in the lens. For the whole Oakley Meta range on one page, see our Oakley Meta glasses guide.
Oakley Meta Vanguard price by lens
Meta’s shop page lists the Vanguard in 8 colours “From $499.” We opened each configuration on meta.com on September 30, 2026. Seven cost the same; the Transitions lens is the only one that costs more.
| Frame | Lens | Price on meta.com |
|---|---|---|
| Black | Prizm Black | $499 |
| Black | Prizm 24K | $499 |
| Black | Prizm Road | $499 |
| Black | Clear | $499 |
| White | Prizm Black | $499 |
| White | Prizm Sapphire | $499 |
| White | Prizm Rose Gold | $499 |
| Black | Prizm Transitions Ember | $579 |
The charging case comes in the box. Extras listed on the same page: a replacement Prizm lens for $85 (Oakley describes the lenses as easily swappable), a spare charging case for $139, Affirm financing from $20.79 a month, and a trade-in credit of up to $149. For every Meta model’s price in one dated table, see our Meta glasses price guide.
Oakley Meta Vanguard specs: camera, battery, weight
These figures come from the specifications section and FAQ of the Vanguard page on meta.com, checked September 30, 2026. They are Meta’s numbers, not our measurements.
| Spec | Oakley Meta Vanguard (Meta’s figure) |
|---|---|
| Camera | 12 MP ultra-wide, 122° field of view, centred · medium image stabilisation · photos 3024 × 4032 |
| Video | 3K at 30 fps · 1080p at 30 or 60 fps · slow motion and hyperlapse |
| Clip length | 1080p 5 min by default · 3K up to 3 min · hyperlapse up to 30 min · no live streaming |
| Audio | 2 open-ear speakers, 6 dB louder than Oakley Meta HSTN · 5 microphones |
| Battery | Up to 9 h typical use · up to 6 h continuous audio · up to 36 h more from the case · full charge in 75 min |
| Storage | 32 GB · 1,000+ photos, 100+ 30-second videos |
| Weight | 66 g (frame) · 258 g (case) |
| Water and dust | IP67 |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi 6 · Bluetooth 5.3 · iOS 15.2+ and Android 10+ |
| Warranty | 12 months against manufacturing defects (EssilorLuxottica) |
The centred camera is the detail most sport buyers care about: footage is framed from between your eyes rather than from one temple, and the 122° view is wider than the 100° on the HSTN. Note the clip limits, though: if you want a whole descent or a long ride in one file, hyperlapse is the mode that runs past a few minutes. For a deeper look at recording limits across Meta’s glasses, see how long Meta glasses can record.
IP67, rain and wind: can the Vanguard get wet?
Meta calls the Vanguard IP67 “sweat, dust and water resistant,” and its FAQ explains what that means: dust-resistant, and able to withstand brief, shallow exposure to water. That covers rain, sweat and spray. It does not cover swimming, surfing, kiteboarding or other water sports involving submersion or high speed; Meta says those exceed the glasses’ water resistance. It also notes that water resistance is not permanent and can decrease with normal wear.
Wind is the other sport problem with open-ear audio, and it is where Meta made the Vanguard different from the HSTN. The spec sheet says you can listen in winds of up to 30 mph and that the speakers are 6 dB louder than the HSTN’s. Three of its five microphones sit near the nose. On the bike, it is still worth checking local rules on headphones while riding; open-ear speakers leave your ears uncovered, which is why many cyclists choose them. Our smart glasses for cycling guide covers that in more detail.
Garmin and Strava integration: how it works
The Vanguard’s clearest advantage over cheaper camera glasses is the link to the fitness tools many athletes already use. Based on Meta’s FAQ, setup looks like this:
- Pair the glasses with the Meta AI app on an iPhone (iOS 15.2 or later) or Android phone (Android 10 or later).
- Link Garmin through the Garmin Connect IQ app and the Meta AI app. Meta says the Garmin device is sold separately and points to a list of compatible models.
- Link Strava from inside the Meta AI app.
- Ask for stats mid-workoutby saying “Hey Meta”; Meta says you get real-time and past performance stats, plus alerts.
- Share with your numbers on: Meta says you can add Garmin or Strava metrics to the photos and videos you capture, and see activity summaries in the app.
If you do not own a compatible Garmin or use Strava, a big part of the Vanguard’s price is paying for a feature you will not use.
Oakley Meta Vanguard fit, sizing and prescription
The Vanguard comes in one size, which Meta labels Standard. The spec sheet lists 136 mm hinge to hinge, a 59 mm lens height and 120 mm temples, on an O Matter wrap-around frame. Oakley describes a 3-point fit system, and Meta lists a universal-fit nose pad installed plus high- and low-bridge nose pads in the box. The nose pads are Oakley’s Unobtanium, which Meta says increases grip as you sweat.
- Prescription:not available. Meta’s FAQ is explicit. If you need corrective lenses in Oakley Meta, the HSTN is the model that takes them; see our Oakley Meta HSTN guide.
- Polarized: no. Meta says the Vanguard lenses are not polarized; the Prizm Black lens on the spec sheet transmits 11% of light.
- Weight: 66 g, which is heavier than a typical pair of sunglasses but spread across a wrap frame meant to stay put at speed.
Who the Vanguard suits, and is it worth it?
Reading Meta’s spec sheet against how people actually train, the Oakley Meta Vanguard makes most sense for:
- Road and gravel cyclists who ride with a Garmin computer and want centred, stabilised footage plus audio in the wind.
- Runners who train with Strava and want their stats read out without looking at a watch. See smart glasses for running.
- Skiers and snowboarders who want a wide point-of-view camera, with hyperlapse for long runs. See smart glasses for skiing.
- Anyone training in the rain, where IP67 gives more margin than the IPX4 on most camera glasses.
It is a weaker fit if you need a prescription, want polarized lenses, mostly wear glasses off the bike, or would rather not route your workouts through a Meta account. If you are choosing between Oakley Meta and Ray-Ban Meta more broadly, our Oakley Meta vs Ray-Ban Meta comparison covers that question.
The glasses show a capture light in the centre of the frame when the camera is in use, and Meta says they will not start capturing if that light is covered. Rules on recording people vary by place, so it is good practice to tell people when you are filming.
Oakley Meta Vanguard alternatives under $200
If the $499 price is the obstacle and you want the same wrap-around shape, the closest option we make is the OXIVUE M14. Here is how it lines up against the Vanguard; M14 figures come from our own product data, Vanguard figures from meta.com on September 30, 2026.
| Feature | Oakley Meta Vanguard | OXIVUE M14 |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $499 · $579 Transitions | $199 |
| Camera | 12 MP, 122°, centred, 3K | 8 MP Sony IMX219, 1080p 30 fps with EIS |
| Water rating | IP67 | IPX4 (splash) |
| Weight | 66 g | 52 g |
| Battery | Up to 9 h + 36 h case | 4 h listening · 7 h calls |
| Lenses | Swappable Prizm, Clear or Transitions | Fixed one-piece shield in 4 finishes |
| Assistant and fitness | Meta AI · Garmin · Strava | HeyCyan app · no Garmin or Strava link |
| Translation | Meta AI live translation | 139 languages in the free HeyCyan app |
What you give up, plainly: Meta AI, the Garmin and Strava integration, the 12 MP camera and 3K video, the IP67 rating and swappable lenses. What you keep is the wrap-shield shape, hands-free photos and stabilised 1080p video, open-ear audio with a bone-conduction mic for calls in the wind, and translation that only you hear through the speakers. The M14 comes in Nero, Azzurro, Ghiaccio and Tramonto. The app needs a free sign-up, but no Meta or social-media account and no subscription. Neither the M14 nor any other OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses, and none has a display.
OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for damage in transit; faults after delivery are covered by a 2-year warranty on eyewear frames through repair or replacement. US orders arrive in 5–9 business days, international orders in 9–14 business days after shipment, and shipping is free from $99. For a longer side-by-side, see our Oakley Meta Vanguard alternatives guide; every OXIVUE spec is on the comparison page, and if you do not need a wrap shield, the M08 at $149 is our lowest-priced frame.
Bottom line
Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses are the most sport-focused glasses Meta sells: $499 ($579 with Transitions), a centred 12 MP 122° camera, IP67, up to 9 hours of battery, audio tuned for wind and Garmin and Strava links, with no prescription option. Buy them if you will use those links every week. If you want the wrap-shield look with a camera, open-ear audio and translation for well under half the price, start with the OXIVUE M14 at $199 (currently $50 off one pair at checkout, applied automatically).
Frequently asked questions
How much is Oakley Meta Vanguard?
On meta.com on September 30, 2026, Oakley Meta Vanguard cost $499 in seven frame and lens combinations (Prizm Black, 24K, Road, Sapphire and Rose Gold, plus Clear) and $579 with Prizm Transitions Ember lenses. The charging case is included. A spare Prizm lens cost $85 and a spare charging case $139.
What can the Oakley Vanguard Meta glasses do?
They take hands-free photos and 3K video from a centred 12 MP camera with a 122° field of view, play music and calls through open-ear speakers tuned for wind, and run Meta AI when you say "Hey Meta." With a compatible Garmin device or Strava linked, Meta AI can read out workout stats, and you can add your metrics to photos and videos.
Can the Oakley Vanguard Meta glasses get wet?
Yes, within limits. Meta rates them IP67: dust-resistant and able to withstand brief, shallow exposure to water, so rain, sweat and spray are covered. Meta says not to use them for swimming, surfing, kiteboarding or other water sports involving submersion or high speeds, and notes water resistance can decrease with normal wear.
Do Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses take prescription lenses?
No. Meta's Vanguard page says prescription lenses are not available. If you need a prescription in Oakley Meta, the HSTN supports -12.00 to +6.00 on meta.com. No OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses either.
How long does the Oakley Meta Vanguard battery last?
Meta rates the Vanguard at up to 9 hours of typical use or up to 6 hours of continuous audio, with up to 36 more hours from the charging case. A full charge takes 75 minutes. Video clips are capped at 5 minutes in 1080p by default and 3 minutes in 3K.
Are Oakley Meta Vanguard lenses polarized?
No. Meta's FAQ says the Vanguard lenses are not polarized; they use Oakley Prizm lenses for contrast, and one option is Prizm Transitions. If you want polarized lenses on Oakley Meta, the HSTN offers two Prizm Polarized options at $449.
Is the Oakley Vanguard worth it?
It is worth it if you train outdoors several times a week, already use Garmin or Strava, and want a wide, centred camera that survives rain and sweat. It is harder to justify for casual use, if you need a prescription, or if $499 is more than you want to spend on glasses that mainly take photos, play audio and handle calls.
What is a cheaper alternative to the Oakley Meta Vanguard?
OXIVUE's M14 is a wrap-around sport shield at $199 with an 8 MP Sony camera, stabilised 1080p video, open-ear audio, IPX4 splash rating, 52 g and translation in 139 languages through the free HeyCyan app. It has no Meta AI, no Garmin or Strava link and a lower water rating than the Vanguard.
