What do Meta glasses do? The short list

Meta glasses are wearable computers built into a normal-looking frame. Meta sells them under three names: Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and its own Meta Glasses line (Adventurer, Capri, Nova, Fury, Starfire). There is also the Meta Ray-Ban Display, the only one with a screen. On Meta’s pages on September 30, 2026, the core things they do are:

1. Take photos and videofrom your point of view with a 12 MP camera, by voice (“Hey Meta, take a photo”) or a capture button, up to 3K video on current models.
2. Answer questions through Meta AI, including questions about what you are looking at.
3. Play audio through open-ear speakers in the arms: music, podcasts and audiobooks.
4. Make and take calls, including video calls on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram that show the other person your view.
5. Send and read messages hands-free.
6. Translate conversations in real time, heard through the speakers.
7. Remember things for you: reminders, where you parked, a book you looked at.

So what do Meta glasses do that a phone doesn’t? They do all of this hands-free, with the phone in your pocket. What they do not do, except on the Display model, is show you anything. Every feature on a standard pair is delivered by voice and sound.

Taking photos and 3K video hands-free

The camera is the feature most people buy Meta glasses for, and the first answer to what do Meta glasses do. On the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 page, Meta lists a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, 3K Ultra HD video and 32 GB of storage, which it describes as 1,000+ photos or 100+ 30-second videos. The Meta Glasses line (Adventurer, Capri) lists the same 12 MP camera with 3K video, plus a “dynamic photo” mode that takes several frames and suggests the best one. Meta’s compare page adds hyperlapse, slow motion, autocapture and adjustable stabilisation for 1080p at 30 frames per second.

You trigger it with a button on the frame or by saying “Hey Meta, take a photo.” The files land in the Meta AI app on your phone, and from there you share them. Oakley Meta HSTN’s page highlights sharing straight to Instagram or WhatsApp. Meta describes a Capture LED that lets others know when you are capturing or going live, and presents it as its privacy signal to the people around you. What can you do with Meta glasses and Meta AI?

Meta AI is the voice assistant you reach by saying “Hey Meta.” Meta’s own examples on its AI glasses page are “What restaurants are open near me?”, “How many moons does Jupiter have?” and “Remind me to pick up the cake in 20 minutes.” Because the glasses have a camera, you can also ask about what you are looking at: Meta mentions landmarks, recipes and remembering where you parked. On the Gen 3 page, you can look at a piece of art or a book and ask the glasses to save it for later.

The Meta Glasses line adds live location sharing (“Hey Meta, share my live location”) and “Music match”, which picks a Spotify song for what you are looking at. Oakley Meta connects to Garmin and Strava for training data. Meta notes that certain Meta AI features are only available in select countries and languages.

Calls, messages and music through open-ear speakers

The speakers sit in the arms and point at your ears, so you hear audio without anything in your ear canal and still hear the room. Meta says the sound is “only you can hear”; like any open-ear design, some sound can escape at high volume. Gen 2 uses five microphones and Gen 3 six, and Meta says calls block 90% of background noise.

• Calls: phone calls by voice, and video calls on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram where the other person sees what you see.
• Messages:send text or voice messages hands-free. Meta notes that WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram or your phone’s native messaging app is needed for some features.
• Music and audiobooks: the Ray-Ban Meta Audio page names Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Audible, controlled by voice. Meta adds that additional account registration, terms and fees may apply.

Live translation: which languages Meta glasses translate

Meta glasses translate spoken conversations in real time and read the translation into your ear. The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 page lists conversation between English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Arabic, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Swedish, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese, “to be updated periodically.” The Gen 1 page lists French, Italian, Spanish and English. On the Display model, the translation can also appear as text in the lens, along with live captions of a conversation in your own language.

Do Meta glasses show you things? Only one model does

This is the most common misunderstanding. Standard Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta Glasses frames have no display. Meta’s compare page states it plainly: “No in-lens display.” You get information by listening.

The Meta Ray-Ban Display, starting at $799, is different. It has a full-colour display built into the right lens and comes with the Meta Neural Band, a wristband that reads hand gestures to control it. On Meta’s page it shows messages, Meta AI answers with visuals, step-by-step guidance, navigation, live captions and a camera viewfinder with 3X zoom. The trade-offs Meta lists on the same page: up to 6 hours of battery against over 8 hours for Meta Glasses, and 1080p+ video at 30 fps rather than 3K. With a prescription it costs $999 total. How do Meta glasses work?

Inside the frame are a camera at the front corner, several microphones, two small speakers in the arms, a touchpad and capture button, a battery and a Bluetooth link to your phone. The glasses pair with the Meta AI appon your phone. The app manages settings, imports photos and video, and connects your messaging and music apps. When you ask Meta AI something, the request goes through your phone to Meta’s servers and the answer comes back as speech. The charging case recharges the glasses in the case: Meta lists up to 48 extra hours for Gen 2 and 50 for Gen 3.

Meta glasses are a camera, a pair of open-ear speakers, microphones and the Meta AI assistant in a Ray-Ban, Oakley or Meta frame. They take photos and 3K video, play music and calls, send messages, answer questions and translate. Only the $799 Display model shows anything in the lens. If Meta AI and sharing to Meta’s apps are the point, buy Meta.
