How to charge Meta glasses, and what to do when they won’t

Meta says Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses charge only in their case. Everything runs through the case, which is why a dirty contact, a weak plug or a lost case stops them cold. This guide walks through Meta's own steps, the case lights, and the fixes Meta lists when they are not charging, all checked on meta.com on October 19, 2026. At the end: how OXIVUE glasses charge, which is different.

1. How to charge Meta glasses in the case

There is exactly one way: dock the glasses in their charging case. Meta’s help page “How to charge AI glasses” covers Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta and says, in so many words, “This is the only way to charge the glasses” (checked October 19, 2026). Meta describes no way to plug a cable into the frame itself.

  1. First time only: peel the protective plastic tab off the metal charging contacts inside the case.
  2. Fold the arms and set the glasses in the case so the nose bridge sits on the charging contacts.
  3. Close the case. The case light blinks to confirm the glasses are charging.
  4. Check progress by pressing the button on the back of the case, or in the Meta AI app while the glasses are on and paired.

Meta also warns: do not store other glasses inside the charging case. Each case is made for its own family of frames. How long a full charge takes depends on the model, and we keep every figure Meta publishes in one dated table in our Meta glasses battery life guide.

2. How to charge the Meta charging case: cable and adapter

The case charges through a USB-C port on its bottom. Plug a USB-C cable into it, connect the other end to a power adapter and plug the adapter into the wall. Meta’s requirements, as listed on October 19, 2026:

  • Cable: USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to USB-A, compliant with the USB-C standard. Any USB generation works. Rated for at least 1.2A; a lower-rated cable still works but charges more slowly.
  • Adapter: USB-C or USB-A, rated 5W or more. A lower-wattage adapter may work but charges more slowly. USB Power Delivery is not required.

In short, the case is the charger. The replacement Ray-Ban Meta case on meta.com is listed as “USB-C charging cable not included”, so a replacement case needs a cable you already own. A phone charger rated 5W or higher meets Meta’s stated minimum.

3. What the Meta charging case lights mean

Press the button on the back of the case to read the light. The meaning depends on whether the glasses are inside. This is Meta’s table for Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta (checked October 19, 2026); Meta notes that Meta Glasses behave differently.

Solid greenGlasses fully chargedCase fully charged
Solid orangeGlasses chargingCase not fully charged
Blinking orange—Case battery low
Blinking redCharging errorCharging error

Two lights deserve attention. Blinking orange with the case empty means the case needs a wall plug before it can top up the glasses again. Blinking red, in either state, is an error, and the next section covers what Meta says causes it.

4. Meta glasses not charging: Meta’s fixes

Meta lists three causes of a charging error on its “How to fix charging problems with AI glasses” page (Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta Glasses, checked October 19, 2026): a blocked contact, heat, or the wrong power source.

If the case blinks red

  • Liquid detected: clean the charging contacts on both the glasses and the case, then dock again.
  • High temperature: move the case and glasses somewhere cooler and let them cool down.
  • Incompatible charger: try a different USB-C cable or power adapter.

People also search for “blinking red 4 times”. Meta’s health and safety page for Meta Glasses says the LED blinking red 4 times may mean the glasses are overheating; Meta says to take them off and let them cool before using them again (checked October 19, 2026). A red light blinking on the case is the charging error described above.

If the glasses won’t turn on or won’t charge in the case

Clean both the glasses and the case thoroughly. Meta names dried sweat, dirt and liquid at the nose bridge as things that block the connection. A dry microfiber cloth on both sets of contacts, then docking again with the lid closed, follows Meta’s advice: clean, then dock again.

If the glasses charge but stay unresponsive, restart them. Meta’s steps: slide the power switch back to turn them off, wait a few seconds, slide it forward. For a force restart, turn them off, press and hold the capture button, slide the switch on while holding it, and release when the status light turns red.

If the case itself won’t charge

An orange or green light that pulses continuously on the case, or a missing charging icon in the Meta AI app, suggests an incompatible power adapter. Try a different USB-C cable first, then a different adapter that meets the 5W minimum. If nothing works, contact Meta support; our Meta glasses warranty guide explains what Meta covers.

5. Lost the case? Charging Meta glasses without it

You cannot. Because the case is the only charger, a lost or broken case means a replacement case. Meta’s help page says you can order one on meta.com in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, or through the Ray-Ban After Sales Portal under “Buy replacement parts”, one case per order. Once you dock the glasses in the new case, the Meta AI app updates to show its serial number.

Match the case to the model. The “Ray-Ban Meta Charging Case for Gen 1 & Gen 2 Glasses” was listed at $99 on meta.com on October 19, 2026, and the listing says it is not compatible with Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 Optics, Gen 3, Ray-Ban Meta Audio, Meta Glasses, Meta Ray-Ban Display or Oakley Meta glasses. Buying a pair second-hand without its case is the same problem in advance; our used Meta glasses guide covers what to check.

6. How OXIVUE glasses charge (no case involved)

OXIVUE frames charge from a cable, not a case. Our support page lists what is in the box: the glasses, a charging cable, a user manual and a microfiber lens cloth, packed in a rigid gift box. There is no carrying case and no charging dock, so there is no case battery to run down and nothing to read from case lights. The flip side is that you have no stored charge to top up from on the go; the cable needs a power source.

The M02C spec sheet lists magnetic pogo charging: the connector snaps onto the frame like a pen cap. It weighs about 41 g, carries a Sony IMX219 8 MP camera with dual stabilisation and is rated IP65, which covers dust and water jets but not immersion. It is $109 at checkout. The M08 sunglasses are $99 at checkout, weigh about 42 g and are rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls from a roughly 300 mAh battery; the M08 has no published water rating.

Charging an M02C: snap the magnetic pogo connector onto the frame, plug the cable into a USB power source and leave it until it is full. If it will not charge, wipe the contacts dry and clean and re-seat the connector. For other models, follow the manual in the box. If a pair still will not take a charge, that is a fault, and faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; start at support. Keep the cable with the glasses, because nothing else charges them.

7. Charging habits for any smart glasses

Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses charge in a case that holds its own battery; OXIVUE frames charge from a cable that snaps onto the frame; Meta also sells a charging stand for Meta Glasses. Check which one a pair uses before you buy, because it decides what you carry on a trip and what happens if you lose a part.

  • Keep the contacts clean. Both systems rely on small metal contacts. Meta names dried sweat and dirt on them as something that blocks charging.
  • Dry before charging. Meta lists liquid on the contacts as a cause of a charging error; dry any pair after rain or a workout before you charge it.
  • Avoid heat.Meta lists high temperature as a charging error. Don’t charge glasses on a hot dashboard.
  • Use a decent plug.A 5W-or-better USB adapter is Meta’s stated minimum for its case, and Meta says a lower-wattage adapter charges more slowly.
  • Know your phone pairing. Meta shows charging status in the Meta AI app; if the app has lost the glasses, see how to connect Meta glasses to an iPhone.

If battery life is the real question, not charging, compare frames in our smart glasses with long battery life guide or side by side on the comparison page.

Frequently asked questions

How do you charge Meta glasses?

In the charging case, and only there. Fold the arms, set the glasses in the case so the nose bridge sits on the metal contacts, and close the lid; the case light blinks to confirm. Meta's help page says this is the only way to charge the glasses. The case itself charges through a USB-C port on its bottom, from a cable rated 1.2A or more and an adapter of 5W or more (checked October 19, 2026).

Do Meta glasses come with a charger?

Yes, the charging case is the charger: Meta says docking in the case is the only way to charge Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses. The case charges over USB-C from a cable rated 1.2A or more and a wall adapter of 5W or more; Meta says USB Power Delivery is not required. If you buy a replacement Ray-Ban Meta case, its meta.com listing says "USB-C charging cable not included" (checked October 19, 2026), so you will need a cable of your own.

Can you charge Meta glasses without the case?

No. Meta's help page states that docking in the charging case is the only way to charge Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses, not a cable to the frame. If you lost the case, Meta sells replacements on meta.com and through the Ray-Ban After Sales Portal. The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 and Gen 2 case was listed at $99 on meta.com on October 19, 2026, and it does not fit Gen 3, Oakley Meta or Meta Glasses.

Why are my Meta glasses not charging?

Meta lists two things to check: dirty contacts and an incompatible power source. Meta says dried sweat, dirt and liquid at the nose bridge can block the connection, so clean the contacts on both the glasses and the case and dock again. If the case itself will not charge, a light that keeps pulsing orange or green, or a missing charging icon in the Meta AI app, points to an incompatible adapter: try another USB-C cable, then another adapter.

Why are my Meta glasses blinking red?

A red blinking light on the case is a charging error. Meta lists three causes: liquid detected (clean the contacts on the glasses and case, then dock again), high temperature (move both somewhere cooler and let them cool), and an incompatible charger (try a different USB-C cable or adapter). Separately, Meta's health and safety page for Meta Glasses says the LED blinking red 4 times may mean the glasses are overheating: take them off and let them cool before using them again (checked October 19, 2026).

How do I check the Meta case battery?

Take the glasses out and press the button on the back of the case. Solid green means the case is full, solid orange means it is not fully charged, blinking orange means its battery is low and blinking red means a charging error. With the glasses docked, the same button shows their status: green full, orange charging. When the glasses are on and paired, the Meta AI app also shows charging status.

My Meta glasses won't turn on. What should I do?

First clean the nose-bridge contacts and the case contacts, then dock and charge. If they still will not respond, restart: slide the power switch back, wait a few seconds, slide it forward. Meta's force restart is: switch off, hold the capture button, slide the switch on, and let go when the light turns red. If none of that works, contact Meta support, which handles its own warranty.

How do you charge OXIVUE glasses?

With the included cable, not a case. Our support page lists the box as the glasses, a charging cable, a manual and a lens cloth, with no carrying case or charging dock. The M02C ($109 at checkout) uses magnetic pogo charging: the connector snaps onto the frame. Faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
