Gifts for coaches who spend the season on the sideline

Gifts for coaches usually mean an engraved tumbler or a team photo book, and both are good. This guide covers a practical gift for outdoor sports coaches that a team can fund together: sunglasses with open-ear audio for calls and an eye-level camera for drill clips. It also covers what to check first, the consent rules for filming players and the other gifts coaches use.

1. Which coaches this gift suits

The gift lists that rank for this search (checked October 9, 2026) lean toward engraved tumblers, frames, team photo books and signed balls. Those are thank-yous to keep. This page is about a different kind of gift: something a coach uses at the next practice. If you arrived looking for the Coach fashion label, this is not that page; it is about the person with the whistle.

Camera glasses make sense for coaches who work outdoors: youth and high school soccer, football, baseball and softball, lacrosse, track and cross country, tennis and pickleball, golf instruction and cycling clubs. Those coaches stand in the sun for hours, take calls from parents and assistants between sessions, and often wish they had a short clip of how a drill actually went.

It is a poor fit for some coaches, and it is better to know that before the team chips in:

  • Indoor and pool coaches. Basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and swim coaches are not the audience for this guide. None of our frames is rated for immersion, and a sunglasses gift makes little sense in a gym.
  • Coaches who wear prescription glasses all day. No OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses, so they would have to choose between seeing clearly and wearing the gift.
  • Coaches who play in the drill. No OXIVUE frame carries an impact rating, so these are not for anyone in the line of a ball, stick or racket.

2. Four things to check before you buy

  1. Do they wear sunglasses on the sideline? A quiet question to an assistant coach or a partner answers this. If they never wear them, choose a different gift.
  2. Which lens? Each frame comes in sun, photochromic or clear. Daytime practices suit the sun lens. If most sessions run in the evening under lights, the clear lens makes more sense. The photochromic lens darkens in UV light.
  3. Do they have a smartphone? Photos, clips, translation and the assistant run through the free HeyCyan phone app. It does not need a Meta, Facebook or Instagram account.
  4. Is the group happy with the terms? No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. For a gift bought on someone else’s behalf, that makes the first three checks matter.

3. M08 vs M02C for a coach

Both frames share the same idea: an ordinary-looking pair of glasses with open-ear speakers, microphones and an 8 MP camera in the frame corner. The differences are weather and stabilisation.

Prices checked 2026-10-09; checkout price may change. Two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear, so a head coach and an assistant could each get a pair: two M08 come to $149, or an M08 and an M02C to $154.

4. M08 sunglasses ($99 at checkout): the dry-weather sideline

The M08 is the pair to start with for most coaches. On the sun lens it looks like a normal pair of dark glasses. The 8 MP camerasits flush in the frame corner, and a touch on the temple starts a photo or a clip of whatever the coach is looking at: a passing pattern, a runner’s stride on the straight, a pitcher’s bullpen. Nothing records until the touch.

The open-ear speakers sit near the ear rather than in it, so a coach can take a parent’s call on the walk to the car or listen to a podcast while setting out cones, and still hear the field around them. The M08 is rated for 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls and weighs about 42 g.

The limit to know: the M08 has no published water rating. For a coach whose season runs through rain, the M02C is the safer choice.

5. M02C ($109 at checkout): rain and early starts

The M02C costs $10 more and is rated IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets, so drizzle at a Saturday morning game is covered. It is not rated for immersion. It uses a Sony IMX219 8 MP sensor with dual stabilisation, which helps when the coach is walking the touchline while filming, and it charges magnetically.

Both frames run the HeyCyan app’s translation in 40+ languages. For a coach whose players’ families speak another language, that can help with a quick word after practice. The translated audio is heard only by the wearer; the other person reads the reply on the phone, and it needs the phone and a connection.

6. Filming players: consent and club rules first

An eye-level camera is useful for coaching, and it comes with responsibilities, especially with youth teams. Pass these points on with the gift:

  • Check the league’s and club’s rules.Your league, school or club may have safeguarding or media rules covering filming, storing and posting footage of players, and may limit cameras or audio devices at games. Read your own organisation’s rules; we do not summarise any specific league here.
  • Get parent consent before filming players. For minors, that means asking parents, and following whatever process the club already uses.
  • Keep clips for coaching. Review them with the player or the coaching staff, store them as the club requires, and do not post them without permission.
  • Audio is the sensitive part. Recording conversations can fall under state consent laws. Our recording laws by state guide covers this. This is general information, not legal advice.

Captures start only with a visible touch on the temple, so nothing is filmed unless the coach chooses to start it.

7. Coach gifts by sport

This page is the starting point. Each sport has its own guide with the details that matter on that field:

For other outdoor sports, the sports guide matches each frame to the activities it covers.

8. Gifts for coaches that are not glasses

Glasses are not right for every coach, and they are rarely the whole gift. Ideas that work on their own or alongside:

  • Something from the players. A card signed by the whole team, a team photo book or a ball signed by every player. This is the part only the team can give.
  • Sideline basics. A large insulated water bottle, a folding chair, a weatherproof clipboard, a spare whistle, a rain jacket.
  • Time back. A meal voucher for a local restaurant, or a car wash after a muddy season.
  • Personalised keepsakes.Engraved tumblers, frames and plaques with the season’s record.

A good combination: the players’ card and photo book as the sentimental part, and one practical item the team funds together.

9. Pooling as a team, and timing

A team pool keeps the gift fair. One parent collects equal amounts, orders once and keeps the receipt. At $99 at checkout, the M08 suits a small pool, and a single pair already qualifies for free shipping. If the team wants to include an assistant coach, two pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear.

Leave time before the end-of-season party. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days after shipment, and outside the US import VAT or duties are paid by the recipient on delivery. For holiday timing, our smart glasses gift guide lists order-by dates.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Compare every model on the comparison page.

Frequently asked questions

What do you get a coach at the end of the season?

Something they will use next season, or something that remembers this one. A team photo book, a signed ball or an engraved keepsake covers the second. For the first, think about what the coach does every session: stands outside for hours, takes calls from parents and wants clips of drills. Camera glasses with open-ear audio fit that day. The OXIVUE M08 sunglasses are $99 at checkout and the M02C, rated IP65 for rain, is $109.

What is an appropriate amount for a coach's gift?

There is no fixed rule. A team pool keeps it simple: each family puts in a small, equal amount, and nobody feels pressure to outspend anyone else. As an example, ten families at $10 each covers an M08 at $99 at checkout, with free shipping because the order reaches $99. Check whether your school or club limits what staff and volunteers may accept.

What does every coach need?

The basics are a whistle, a clipboard or tablet, a good water bottle and a bag that survives the season. Beyond those, outdoor coaches spend long hours in the sun and on the phone. A pair of sunglasses that also takes calls through open-ear speakers, and captures a drill clip with a touch on the temple, covers both. If the coach wears prescription glasses all day, skip camera glasses: none of ours take prescription lenses.

What to put in a coaches goodie bag?

Keep it practical and small: a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, a spare whistle, snacks, a handwritten card from each player and a printed team photo. If the team is pooling for one larger item, put the card and photo in the bag and hand the main gift over separately. A pair of camera glasses works as that main gift for an outdoor coach, but write the card first; it is the part only the team can give.

Can a coach film practice with camera glasses?

Only within the rules the club or league sets and with the right permissions. Most youth sports involve minors, and your organisation may have safeguarding or media rules on filming players, storing clips and posting them. Get parent consent before filming players, keep clips for coaching use, and do not post them without permission. Audio recording can also fall under state consent laws. OXIVUE frames record only when the wearer touches the temple, which is visible to the people around them.

Are these safe to wear while demonstrating a drill?

Treat them as sunglasses, not protective eyewear. OXIVUE publishes no impact rating on any frame, so they should not be worn where a ball, stick or racket could hit the face, and players should not wear them in live play. On the sideline, behind a feeding position or on a walk-through, they work as intended. If a demonstration puts the coach in the line of play, take them off first.

How fast do they ship, and what if something goes wrong?

US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days and international orders in 9 to 14 business days after shipment, with free shipping from $99, so a single pair qualifies. Order with time to spare before an end-of-season party. OXIVUE does not offer refunds; the exception is an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. A fault after delivery is covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
