What to wear to a football game, from kickoff sun to a cold fourth quarter

Deciding what to wear to a football game in November comes down to three things: layers for a stadium that gets colder every quarter, a bag that gets through the gate, and sunglasses for a low afternoon sun. Here is a simple formula for men and women, how to adjust it for rain and night games, and where camera sunglasses fit, and where they do not.

1. The game-day outfit formula

A good football game outfit is five pieces: one team-colour item, a warm layer, practical pants, shoes you can stand in for three hours, and accessories for the weather. The first rule: pick one piece in your team’s colours and keep the rest neutral. A team tee, jersey, hoodie, cap, beanie or scarf all count. Navy, grey, black, olive and cream underneath let the team colour stand out without the outfit looking like a costume.

For men, the easy version is a team tee or crewneck, dark jeans, a field or puffer jacket and boots or sneakers. For women, an oversized team sweatshirt with leggings and boots, or a team tee under a varsity or bomber jacket with jeans, both work from tailgate to the fourth quarter. A jersey is fine over a long-sleeve base layer, but it is not warm on its own, so treat it as the top layer only on a mild day.

Shoes matter more than they look. You will walk from parking, stand through the anthem and big plays, and climb concrete steps. Broken-in boots or sneakers beat anything new, and on a cold day a warm, waterproof boot keeps your feet comfortable on the concrete.

2. What to wear to a football game in cold weather

In cold weather, wear three layers and cover your head, hands and feet. A stadium seat is not a walk: you sit or stand mostly still for three hours or more, often in wind, so you should dress warmer than the temperature suggests.

  • Base layer. A thermal top and, if it is properly cold, thermal leggings under your jeans. Wool or synthetic fabric keeps warmth when you sweat on the walk in; cotton does not.
  • Mid layer. A fleece, a team hoodie or a sweater. This is the layer most people take off in the sun and put back on at halftime.
  • Outer layer. A windproof or insulated jacket, ideally with deep pockets. A hood or a packable rain shell helps if showers are forecast.
  • Extremities. A beanie in team colours, gloves that still let you use your phone, wool socks and a scarf. Hands and feet get cold first.
  • Extra warmth. A blanket to sit on or wrap around your legs. The NFL policy lets you carry a blanket in over your shoulder or arm (checked October 20, 2026).

A November game often starts in sun and ends in shade or darkness, so the right outfit is one you can adjust. Zip-up layers beat pullovers for that reason.

3. Outfits by kickoff time and weather

The same game needs four different outfits depending on when it starts and what the sky is doing. Use this table as a quick check before you leave.

4. Sunglasses for a low afternoon sun

Yes, bring sunglasses to a day game. In November the sun sits low in the sky through the afternoon, and depending on which way your section faces you can spend much of the game looking toward it. A cap shades you from sun overhead, but not from sun near the horizon straight ahead.

Sunglasses also finish the outfit: a dark frame goes with any team colour. For a night game, leave tinted lenses at home: they make it harder to see after dark.

For more on choosing a sun lens, see smart sunglasses for men and the photochromic smart glasses guide.

5. Bags, pockets and the gate

At an NFL stadium your bag must be clear and no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″, or a non-clear bag no larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″. That is the league’s policy as published on nfl.com (checked October 20, 2026). A one-gallon clear freezer bag is also allowed, and exceptions are made for medically necessary items after inspection. College and high school stadiums set their own rules, so check the venue’s page before game day.

The policy also shapes your outfit. The NFL page says you can carry personal items in your pockets or jacket, which is one more reason to choose a coat with deep, zipped pockets. A small clear crossbody bag keeps your phone, keys, card and lip balm in one place.

6. Where camera sunglasses fit

Camera sunglasses are one option for a day game, not a requirement. OXIVUE makes two frames that fit a game-day outfit: the M08 at $99 at checkout and the M02C at $109. Both have a sun lens option, open-ear speakers and an 8 MP camera that starts only when you touch the temple.

  • OXIVUE M08 ($99 at checkout, listed $149). About 42 g, an 8 MP camera, 7 hours of listening or 4 hours of calls, and a choice of sun, photochromic or clear lens. No published water rating, so keep it dry in a downpour.
  • OXIVUE M02C ($109 at checkout, listed $159). About 41 g, a Sony IMX219 8 MP sensor with dual stabilisation, and IP65, which covers rain and water jets but not immersion. Magnetic charging. The better pick if your games tend to be wet.

Where they help: the open-ear speakers play music or take a call on the walk in or at the tailgate while you still hear the people around you, and in the parking lot a touch on the temple takes a photo of your group without passing a phone around. Where they do not: they have no display, they do not take prescription lenses, and the HeyCyan phone app is needed for files and the assistant. They are not eye protection.

Two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear, so two M08 come to $149 if you go to games together. US delivery takes 5–9 business days; to have them by Thanksgiving, order by about November 13. 7. Cameras, recording and venue rules

Do not assume camera glasses are allowed in a stadium. The NFL bag policy page (checked October 20, 2026) mentions wearing a camera around your neck or holding it in your hands, and says nothing about camera glasses. Each venue and each ticket sets its own rules on photography, video and recording, and they can differ between the NFL, college and high school games.

  • Read the venue’s camera and conduct policy before you go, and follow staff at the gate if they ask you to put the glasses away.
  • Do not livestream or rebroadcast the game. Keep any photo to your own group and your own moments, and check what your ticket terms say.
  • Ask before you photograph people around you, especially other people’s children. A capture starts with a visible touch on the temple; use it the same way you would use a phone. Recording conversations can need consent depending on the state; our smart glasses recording laws by state guide has the detail. This is general information, not legal advice.

The same advice applies to live music; see camera glasses for concerts.

None of our frames take prescription lenses. Read the full return policy.

Frequently asked questions

Do people wear jeans to football games?

Yes. Jeans are a standard base for a football game outfit, for men and women alike. They hold up on metal bleachers and pair with a team tee, hoodie or jacket. On a cold or wet November day, add thermal leggings or long underwear underneath, because denim gets cold once it is damp. If rain is likely, quick-drying pants or joggers are the more comfortable choice.

What should I wear to an NFL game?

Wear one piece in your team's colours, comfortable shoes you can stand in for hours, and layers you can add or remove. A team tee or jersey over a base layer, jeans, a warm jacket and a beanie covers most fall games. For a day game, bring sunglasses for the glare off the field. Check the stadium's bag policy before you pack anything else.

What do you wear to a football game in cold weather?

Three layers: a thermal base layer, a warm mid layer such as a fleece or team hoodie, and a windproof or insulated jacket on top. Add a beanie, gloves, wool socks and warm boots, since feet and hands get cold first on concrete. Stadium seats sit still for three hours or more, so dress warmer than you would for a walk at the same temperature.

Can you bring a bag into an NFL stadium?

Only certain bags. The NFL's policy, checked October 20, 2026, allows clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags no larger than 12" x 6" x 12", a one-gallon clear freezer bag, or a non-clear bag no larger than 4.5" x 6.5". Exceptions are made for medically necessary items after inspection. College stadiums set their own rules, so check the venue's page before you go.

Should I wear sunglasses to a football game?

Yes, for a day game. In November the afternoon sun sits low, and depending on where your seats face you can be looking toward it for much of the game. A cap helps with sun from above but not with low sun straight ahead. For a night game you can leave them at home, since tinted lenses are no use after dark.

Are camera glasses allowed in football stadiums?

It depends on the venue, so do not assume they are. The NFL's bag policy page talks about a camera worn around the neck or held in your hands, and does not mention camera glasses. Venues and ticket terms set their own rules on photography, video and audio recording, and you should never broadcast or livestream the game. Read the venue's camera and conduct policy before you go.

What are some cute outfits to wear to a football game?

Popular choices are an oversized team sweatshirt with leggings and boots, a team tee under a varsity or bomber jacket with jeans, or a sweater in team colours with a scarf. Keep one bold team-colour piece and everything else neutral. For a cold game, layer a thermal top underneath so the outfit still works in the third quarter.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
