The problem photochromic solves is specific to smart glasses

On an ordinary pair of sunglasses, adaptive tint is a convenience. On AI eyewear it is closer to a requirement — and the reason is the hardware. A frame carrying a camera, microphones, speakers and a battery is a frame you charge in the morning and want to forget about. How the tint actually behaves

The lens carries a coating whose molecules change shape under ultraviolet light. UV in, dark. UV gone, clear. Two honest numbers:

  • Clearing: a couple of minutes. Always slower than darkening. Walk into a restaurant and you will spend the first minute a shade darker than everyone else.

They under-perform behind a windscreen. Car glass blocks most UV — the exact trigger the lens needs — so photochromic eyewear stays lighter than you want while driving. And cold weather makes them darker and slower to clear. The reaction is temperature-sensitive: a bright winter morning gives you a deeper tint that lingers longer indoors than a summer one.

If most of your wear is behind the wheel, take the dedicated sunglass lens instead. If most of it is walking, working, travelling and moving between the two, photochromic is the better call.

Photochromic vs. polarised vs. plain sunglass lenses

These get confused constantly, so plainly: photochromic changes darkness in response to UV. Polarised cuts glare bouncing off flat surfaces — water, wet roads, car bonnets — and does not change with light level. Standard sunglass tint is simply fixed and dark. They are different jobs; photochromic is the only one that adapts, which is why it is the one that suits a frame you keep on.

What to check before you buy photochromic AI glasses

1. Is it a lens option or an upcharge?
