Photochromic smart glasses — one frame, indoors and out.

The problem photochromic solves is specific to smart glasses

On an ordinary pair of sunglasses, adaptive tint is a convenience. On AI eyewear it is closer to a requirement — and the reason is the hardware. A frame carrying a camera, microphones, speakers and a battery is a frame you charge in the morning and want to forget about. The moment you walk indoors and have to swap it for clear glasses, you put the camera in your pocket and the translation in a drawer.

Photochromic lenses remove that decision. The frame that films the street outside is the frame that transcribes the meeting inside. Nothing gets swapped, so nothing gets left behind.

The tint lifecycle, in four steps

1. Activation — UV triggers it, not brightness

The lens carries a coating whose molecules change shape under ultraviolet light. UV in, dark. UV gone, clear. This is the single most useful thing to understand about the technology, because it explains every situation where the lens behaves differently from how bright the day looks to you. A bright but UV-poor environment — under glass, in deep shade on a hazy day — will not tint the way the light level suggests it should.

2. Transition speed — 30 seconds out, a couple of minutes back

  • Darkening: about 30 seconds to most of its tint in direct sun. Fast enough that stepping out of a building feels normal rather than blinding.
  • Clearing: a couple of minutes. Always slower than darkening — that is chemistry, not a defect, and it is true of every photochromic lens on the market. Walk into a restaurant and you will spend the first minute a shade darker than everyone else.

3. The two failure cases — windscreens and cold

They under-perform behind a windscreen. Car glass blocks most UV — the exact trigger the lens needs — so photochromic eyewear stays lighter than you want while driving. And cold weather makes them darker and slower to clear. The reaction is temperature-sensitive: a bright winter morning gives you a deeper tint that lingers longer indoors than a summer one.

If most of your wear is behind the wheel, take the dedicated sunglass lens instead. If most of it is walking, working, travelling and moving between the two, photochromic is the better call.

4. Care and swapping — the decision is not permanent

On the M08, M02C and M08C the lenses are interchangeable, so the choice you make in the configurator today is not the one you live with forever. That matters more than it sounds: most people work out which lens suits their life in the second month, not the first. Clean with the cloth supplied and a lens-safe, alcohol-free wipe — solvent-based cleaners attack the coating that does the work. And judge the frame with the clear or photochromic lens fitted rather than the sunglass one: a dark tint hides a multitude of design sins, and if a pair only looks right tinted you will only wear it tinted. The exception: the M14 ($199) has no photochromic option and no interchangeable lenses at all. It is a 52 g wrap-around sports shield with a fixed one-piece PC lens, chosen by colourway — Nero (smoke), Azzurro (blue mirror), Ghiaccio (ice-blue mirror) or Tramonto (sunset-red mirror).
