Concert guide · 2026

The best camera for concerts might be the one you don’t hold up.

The usual question is which small camera to bring into a venue. The honest first answer is that the venue and the artist decide, and you should check their rules before you buy anything. After that, it comes down to what you want to keep: sharp stage photos, or a hands-free memory of the night from where you stood. Here is how a phone, a compact camera and camera glasses compare, and where glasses fall short.

1. Check the venue and artist rules first

No camera is the best camera for concerts if it is not allowed through the door. Policies are set venue by venue and sometimes tour by tour, and the same arena can allow phones for one show and ask for a phone-free night at the next. Before you choose a device:

  • Read the event page and the venue’s prohibited-items page.Look for the words “cameras”, “recording devices” and “detachable lenses”.
  • Read the ticket terms. Some artists ask that shows are not filmed at all, and that request applies whatever you carry.
  • Treat camera glasses as a camera. They are one. If the rules say no cameras, leave them at home or wear an ordinary pair. If staff ask you to take them off or stop filming, do so. We will not suggest ways around a venue’s rule.

2. Phone vs compact camera vs camera glasses

Many concert-camera threads compare point-and-shoot compacts. That is the right tool for one job. Here is the honest split across the three things people actually bring:

PhoneCompact cameraCamera glasses (OXIVUE)
HandsOne arm up while filmingHeld to your eye or at chest heightHands free; the lens follows your head
ZoomUsually some optical zoom; digital beyond thatOften optical zoomNone; a wide view of what is in front of you

Venue rulesUsually allowed; some phone-free showsOften restricted, especially detachable lensesTreated as a camera; check before you go

In short: if you want a photo of the singer’s face from row 30, a compact camera with zoom is the tool, where it is allowed. If you want to remember what it felt like to stand in the crowd, without spending the song looking at a screen, glasses do that better, because they record your eye line while you watch with your own eyes.

3. What camera glasses won’t do at a show

  • No zoom. The camera shows what is in front of your face. From the back of an arena, the stage will be small in the frame.
  • No published low-light performance. Every current OXIVUE frame has an 8 MP camera. We do not publish how it handles a dark room, so assume bright stage lights and dark crowds will challenge it, as they challenge most small cameras.
  • Modest video specs. The M14 is the only frame with a published video mode: 1080p at 30 fps. Video resolution for the M08 and M02C is not published.
  • No recording-length promise. We do not state a video-recording duration for any frame. Plan on short clips of the moments you care about, not a whole set.
  • Head movement is camera movement. Every glance at your friend becomes a pan. Keep your head still for a few seconds when you want a usable clip.

Our video recording glasses guide covers clip length, storage and resolution across brands in more detail.

4. Which lens for indoor and evening shows

The M08 and M02C each come with a choice of three lenses: sunglasses, photochromic and clear. For concerts:

  • Clear for indoor venues, clubs and night shows. Nothing dims your view of the stage.
  • Photochromic if your shows run from daylight into dark, such as a festival afternoon into a headline set. It darkens in sunlight and stays light indoors. More on how it behaves in our photochromic smart glasses guide.
  • Sunglasses only for daytime outdoor sets. A full-tint lens in a dark room is the wrong tool.

5. Which OXIVUE frame for concerts

Prices below are what you pay at checkout for one pair, with the first-pair offer applied automatically. Prices checked 2026-10-05; checkout price may change.

  • M02C if you move with the crowd. Dual stabilisation smooths footage when you are walking or dancing, and the IP65 rating covers rain and sweat at an outdoor festival. It is not rated for immersion.
  • M08 for a simple hands-free memory. The lowest price in the line with the same 8 MP resolution. Pick the clear or photochromic lens for shows; the sunglasses lens suits daytime outdoor sets, hiking and driving.

Going with a friend? Two or more pairs are 50% off all eyewear at checkout, so two M08 come to $149. The M14 ($149 at checkout) is our wrap shield for cycling and skiing and has the only published video mode, 1080p at 30 fps; its fixed shield is tinted or mirrored, so it suits daytime outdoor sets more than a dark room. Every model is side by side on the comparison page.

6. Filming people around you

  • The people next to you are in the shot. A camera in a frame is less obvious than a raised phone. Tell the people around you if you are filming them, and stop if they ask.
  • Audio has its own rules. Some US states require everyone in a private conversation to consent to being recorded. Our recording laws by state guide covers the detail. This is general information, not legal advice.
  • The venue’s rule wins. Even where filming is lawful, a venue or an artist can ban it, and staff can ask you to stop.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best camera for concerts?

It depends on what the venue allows and what you want to keep. For sharp stills of the stage from a distance, a compact camera with a bright lens is the strongest tool, if the venue permits it. For a hands-free memory of how the night felt from where you stood, camera glasses work: the OXIVUE M02C is $109 at checkout and the M08 is $99. Check the venue and artist camera policy before you choose anything.

Can I take a digital camera to a concert?

Sometimes. Every venue and tour sets its own rule, and it is usually printed on the event page, the venue's bag or prohibited-items page, or the ticket terms. Common patterns are no professional cameras or detachable lenses, or no recording devices at all. Treat camera glasses as a camera: if cameras are not allowed, leave them at home or wear an ordinary pair.

Are camera glasses allowed at concerts?

Only where the venue and the artist allow cameras. Camera glasses are a recording device, and staff are entitled to treat them as one. If the policy bans cameras, do not bring them, and if staff ask you to remove them or stop filming, do so.

What are the best iPhone camera settings for concerts?

Long-press on the stage to lock focus and exposure, then drag the exposure down a little so bright stage lights do not blow out. Avoid digital zoom, which magnifies noise. Shoot short clips rather than whole songs, and keep your arm low out of courtesy to the people behind you.

What camera lens is good for concert photography?

On an interchangeable-lens camera, photographers typically use a lens with a wide maximum aperture, such as f/1.8 or f/2.8, to gather light in a dark room. Many venues do not allow detachable-lens cameras for ticket holders, so check before you pack one. Camera glasses have a fixed lens and no zoom.

Do camera glasses work in a dark venue?

OXIVUE does not publish low-light performance for any frame, so we will not promise it. All four current frames use an 8 MP camera; expect footage of a dim room with bright stage lights to look like a phone clip at its least flattering, not like a dedicated camera with a large sensor.

Which lens should I choose for an indoor or evening show?

Clear or photochromic. A clear lens leaves your view of a dark room untouched. A photochromic lens darkens in sunlight and stays light indoors, so it covers an afternoon festival set that runs into the evening. A full-tint sun lens is the wrong choice for an indoor show.

How much do OXIVUE camera glasses cost?

At checkout, one pair costs $99 (M08), $109 (M02C), $119 (M08C) or $149 (M14). Two or more pairs are 50% off all eyewear at checkout, so two M08 come to $149. Every single pair qualifies for free US shipping, which starts at $99. Prices checked 2026-10-05; checkout price may change.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
