Thanksgiving activities for adults: 25 ideas beyond the meal
These Thanksgiving activities for adults are for grown-ups who want more from the day than waiting for the turkey: a morning run or ride, a hike, games that work at a table of adults, kitchen contests, a football watch party and a walk after dinner. We make camera glasses, so there is one short section on where they fit; everything else works without them.

1. Outdoor Thanksgiving activities for adults (1–6)
Six outdoor ideas get adults moving before or after the meal, and all of them work best in daylight. Late November is cold in much of the US, so dress in layers, plan the active part for the morning or early afternoon, and choose a route that brings everyone home in time to help with dinner.
- A turkey trot. Many towns hold a Thanksgiving morning fun run or walk, often raising money for a local cause. Sign up as a household, walk it if running is not your thing, and wear something festive. Check your local event’s page for start times and registration.
- A morning hike. A two- or three-hour loop on a nearby trail is a good reset before a long afternoon indoors. Pick a trail everyone can finish, pack water and a snack, and agree on a turnaround time. Our smart glasses for hiking guide covers what to carry if you want photos without stopping for your phone.
- A bike ride. Quiet holiday-morning roads suit an easy group ride or a harder solo one. Keep it short enough that you are not the person still showering when the turkey comes out. Riders who want audio and a camera should read smart glasses for cycling.
- Backyard touch football. Two-hand touch, mixed teams, a time limit and someone on the sideline keeping score. It is the classic for a reason, and it works with any number of players.
- A walk after dinner. Twenty minutes around the block between the meal and the pie gives everyone a breather and a chance to talk away from the table. Go before it is fully dark, or bring a light.
- A fall photo walk. Give everyone a small list (the best leaf, the oldest house on the street, the funniest yard decoration) and compare photos over dessert. For more ideas, see fall date ideas, most of which work for friends and family too.
2. Thanksgiving games for adults (7–13)
Seven table games work for a room of grown-ups, need nothing more than paper and pens, and involve no drinking. Mix teams across generations so the same three people do not win every round.
- Thanksgiving trivia.Write 20 questions about the holiday, the food and the family (“Who burned the rolls in which year?”). The family questions are always the funniest.
- Who said it? Before dinner, collect one surprising story or fact from each guest on a slip of paper. Read them out and have everyone guess who wrote each.
- Holiday charades.Prompts drawn from a bowl: “carving the turkey,” “the last slice of pie,” “stuck in holiday traffic.”
- A gratitude round. Each person names one thing from the past year they are thankful for, and the next person has to connect theirs to it. It is gentler and more interesting than going around the table.
- Blind pie tasting. Number the pies, hide the labels and vote by anonymous ballot, then reveal the bakers.
- A card or board game tournament. One game everyone knows, a bracket on a sheet of paper and a ridiculous trophy (a foil-wrapped turkey bone works).
- Minute challenges. Stack cups, roll a cranberry across the table with your nose, name ten fall foods in a minute. Short, loud and good for a sleepy room.
3. Kitchen and table ideas (14–18)
Five food activities turn cooking from a chore for one person into something the whole house shares. Keep allergies in mind and label dishes.
- A side-dish cook-off. Two or three guests each bring their version of the same side, and the table votes.
- A pie bake-off. Categories (classic, wild card, best crust) give everyone a chance at a ribbon.
- A family recipe interview. Ask the oldest cook in the room to walk you through one dish while you write it down, then make it together next year.
- A recipe-card swap.Everyone brings a card for a dish they love, and everyone leaves with someone else’s.
- Build the table together. Leaves, candles, handwritten place cards. Give the guests who arrive early a job.
4. Low-key and meaningful activities (19–22)
Four quieter ideas suit adults who would rather talk than compete, and for anyone spending the day in a small group.
- Write gratitude notes. One short card each to someone who is not at the table, posted the next day.
- Call the people who could not come. Pass the phone around for a video call while everyone is in one room.
- Volunteer. Local food banks and community kitchens often need help in the days around Thanksgiving. Contact them early, because holiday shifts fill up.
- Start a slow tradition. A jigsaw puzzle that lives on a side table all weekend, or a holiday film everyone watches together after dessert.
5. A Thanksgiving football watch party (23–25)
Three ideas make the afternoon football games social instead of just background noise.
- A low-stakes pool. Predict the score, the first touchdown or the number of commercials for pie. Points, not money.
- Team colours at the table. Split the room by allegiance and let each side choose one snack.
- Halftime football in the yard. Fifteen minutes of touch football at halftime, back inside before the second half.
Going to a game in person instead? Many stadiums restrict bags, cameras and recording, so check the venue’s bag and camera policy before you go, whatever you plan to carry.
6. Where camera glasses fit, and where they do not
Camera glasses fit four of these 25 activities well: the turkey trot, the hike, the bike ride and the walk after dinner while it is still light. They are for hands-free photos, short clips, music and calls while you are moving. They do not belong at the dinner table, during games, or anywhere people have not agreed to be photographed.
| Activity | Good fit? | Which OXIVUE pair |
|---|---|---|
| Morning hike or walk | Yes, in daylight | M08 ($99) or M02C ($109) with the sun lens |
| Turkey trot in rain or sweat | Yes, with a water rating | M02C, IP65 (not immersion) |
| Bike ride | Yes, in daylight | M14 ($149), 52 g wrap shield, IPX4 |
| Walk after dinner | Before dark only | Any pair with the clear lens; tinted lenses are not for low light |
| Table games, meal, gratitude round | No | Take them off; ask before any photo |
| Stadium game | Check the venue first | Follow the bag and camera policy |
The M08 is the everyday pick for a hike or a walk: about 42 g, an 8 MP camera set in the frame corner, open-ear speakers rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls, and a choice of sun, photochromic or clear lens. It has no published water rating.
The M02C adds an IP65 rating (dust-tight, protected against water jets, not immersion), a Sony IMX219 8 MP sensor with dual stabilisation for a jog or a brisk walk, and magnetic charging, at about 41 g. For running in general, see smart glasses for running.
The M14 is the cycling frame: a 52 g one-piece wrap shield rated IPX4 for splashes and rain, with a Sony IMX219 8 MP camera. Its audio figures are the reverse of the M08 family, at 4 hours of listening and 7 hours of calls. The shield comes in four colourways and cannot be swapped, so plan the ride for daylight.
None of these frames has a display or takes prescription lenses, and none is safety eyewear. Photos and clips go to the HeyCyan phone app. The $50 off one pair is applied at checkout, and two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear. US delivery takes 5–9 business days; to have them by Thanksgiving, order by about November 13. Compare every model on the comparison page.
7. Photos of family at Thanksgiving: ask first
Ask before you photograph or film relatives and guests, and ask parents before you capture anyone else’s children. Some people do not want their picture shared, and a holiday gathering is a private setting. OXIVUE glasses start a photo or clip only with a visible touch on the temple, but that is not a substitute for asking. Recording conversations can also require consent under state law; our smart glasses recording laws by state guide has the details. Do not film anyone at a volunteer shift, and keep the camera off during any game that involves drinks. This is general information, not legal advice.
Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99, so every single pair qualifies. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days after shipment, and import taxes outside the US are paid on delivery. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. See the shipping policy and the warranty.
Frequently asked questions
What are some fun activities for a Thanksgiving party?
Plan one active thing and one table thing. Before the meal, a group walk, a turkey trot or a backyard game of touch football gets people outside. After the meal, a blind pie tasting, Thanksgiving trivia or a gratitude round keeps adults at the table without screens. If the party is mostly grown-ups, add a recipe swap or a cook-off judged by the guests. Keep the schedule loose; dinner always runs late.
What are some fun indoor games for Thanksgiving for adults?
Thanksgiving trivia, charades with holiday prompts, a blind pie or side-dish tasting with anonymous ballots, Who Said It (match each guest to an old family story) and a card or board game tournament with a silly trophy all work for adults. None of them needs special equipment. Keep teams mixed across generations so the same people do not win every round.
What are some activities people do on Thanksgiving?
The common ones are cooking together, a morning turkey trot or walk, watching the parade and the afternoon football games, a gratitude round at the table, a walk after dinner and pie with games in the evening. Many adults also call relatives who cannot travel, volunteer at a local food drive, or start a holiday movie or puzzle tradition.
What are some fun activities I can do at work for Thanksgiving?
A potluck lunch with a recipe-card swap, a gratitude wall where colleagues add notes, a blind pie tasting, Thanksgiving trivia in teams and a team food or coat drive are easy to run at work. Keep games short enough for a lunch break, make the potluck optional, and label dishes so people with allergies can choose safely.
What are good outdoor Thanksgiving activities for adults?
A turkey trot, a morning hike, a bike ride, touch football in the yard, a park walk after dinner and a fall photo walk are the classics. Do the active part in the morning or early afternoon while it is light, dress in layers, and pick a route that brings everyone back in time to help in the kitchen.
Can I wear camera glasses for a turkey trot or a bike ride?
Yes, in daylight and with the right model. The OXIVUE M02C ($109 at checkout) is rated IP65, so rain and sweat are covered, but not immersion. The M14 ($149) is a 52 g wrap shield rated IPX4 for splashes and suits a ride. The M08 ($99) has no published water rating. None of them is safety eyewear, and none has a display.
Is it OK to film family at Thanksgiving with camera glasses?
Only if people are happy with it. Ask before you photograph or film relatives and guests, and ask parents before you capture anyone else's children. OXIVUE glasses start a capture only with a visible touch on the temple, but that does not replace asking. Recording conversations may also need consent under your state's law.
Will glasses arrive before Thanksgiving, and what if something goes wrong?
Not guaranteed. US delivery takes 5–9 business days; to have them by Thanksgiving, order by about November 13. International orders take 9–14 business days after shipment, and import taxes outside the US are paid on delivery. OXIVUE does not offer refunds; an order damaged in transit is replaced or refunded, and a fault after delivery is repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty.
What these frames won’t do
- No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
- No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
- Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
- Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
- M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
- M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
- M14: one-piece shield, so the lens can't be swapped for clear or photochromic.
- M14: IPX4 covers splash, spray and rain only, and at 52 g it is heavier than the 41–42 g frames.
Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
