Gifts for boyfriend: one for the trips you take together

This gift is built around the hikes, drives and weekends away you already share: a pair of camera sunglasses that takes eye-level photos with a touch on the temple and plays music through open-ear speakers. Here is who it suits, which pair to pick, how to use it politely around other people, and when to choose something else.

1. The idea: a gift for the trips you take together

OXIVUE camera glasses cost $99 to $149 at checkout for one pair (M08 $99, M02C $109, M14 $149), and their whole point is the photos from days you spend together. Think about the trail you both like, the coast road you drive every summer, the city weekend you keep planning. If one of you usually ends up holding the phone up, the photos tend to be of whoever was not holding it.

A pair of camera sunglasses changes that in a small way. He touches the temple and the frame captures what he is looking at, from his own eye level, while his hands stay on the map, the dog lead or the steering wheel of a parked car. Between photos the same frame plays music, podcasts and directions through open-ear speakers, and takes phone calls through its microphones, so it earns its place on ordinary days too.

That is why we frame it as a shared-trips gift rather than a gadget. It fits the “something to do” slot of the five-gift rule (want, need, wear, read, do), and it comes back out every time you go somewhere.

2. Who it suits, and who it doesn’t

It suits a boyfriend who already wears sunglasses outdoors and does not need vision correction all day. Check that first, because no OXIVUE model takes prescription lenses.

  • Good fit: he hikes, drives, fishes, cycles, skis or travels, likes taking photos but hates stopping to get his phone out, and listens to music or podcasts on the move.
  • Good fit: he is curious about tech but does not want a screen in front of his eyes. These frames have no display; he hears answers and captures photos and clips.
  • Poor fit: he wears prescription glasses all day and does not use contact lenses.
  • Poor fit: he wants to video call or livestream from his point of view. The glasses handle calls as an audio headset; the camera is not a video source for calls.
  • Poor fit: he dislikes anything that needs a phone app. Translation, the assistant and moving photos off the frame all run through the free HeyCyan app.

If he falls into the poor-fit list, choose something else. Our gifts for men under $100 page is a good next stop.

3. Which pair: M08 vs M02C vs M14

All three have an 8 MP camera, Bluetooth 5.4 and open-ear speakers; they differ in weather rating, lens and where they make sense. Here is the side-by-side.

Prices checked 2026-10-19; checkout price may change. If you are unsure, the M08 on the sun lens is the safe default: it looks like an ordinary pair of dark sunglasses and costs the least. Choose the M02Cif your trips run into rain or spray, or if he would enjoy “Hey Cyan” visual AI, which can describe what he is looking at. Choose the M14 only if the trips are on a bike or on the slopes; its wrap shield comes in Nero, Azzurro, Ghiaccio and Tramonto, and it is heavier than the other two. 4. What he’ll actually use them for on a trip

The camera starts only with a touch on the temple, so the realistic uses are short and deliberate rather than all-day recording.

  • On the trail. A photo of the view at the top, a short clip of you crossing the stream ahead of him, both from his eye level, without stopping to unlock a phone. Our smart glasses for hiking guide goes deeper on trail use.
  • On a road trip. Directions and music through the open-ear speakers while he can still hear you and the road. Keep the camera for stops, viewpoints and walks; it should not be touched while the car is moving. Read can you drive with smart glasses for the rules on wearing them at the wheel.
  • Abroad. The HeyCyan app translates 40+ languages on the M08 and M02C and 139 on the M14. He hears the translation; the other person reads the reply on his phone, and it needs the phone nearby and connected.
  • Afterwards. There is no display. Photos and clips move to the phone app, where you can pick the shots worth keeping from the day.

The OXIVUE frames use open-ear speakers rather than earbuds, so expect some sound to be audible to people nearby at high volume and outside noise to stay audible to him; they suit walks and drives better than a loud train.

5. Recording etiquette on shared trips

The short rule: the camera is visible and starts with a visible touch, and it should be used openly. A gift like this is only fun if the people around you are comfortable with it.

  • Say so. When you meet friends or family on the trip, mention that his glasses have a camera. Then let anyone who would rather not be in shots say so.
  • Ask before close-ups.A landscape is one thing; a stranger’s face or a child is another. Ask first, and respect a no.
  • Take them off where cameras don’t belong. Restrooms, changing rooms, gyms, some museums, places of worship and anywhere that posts a no-camera sign.
  • Mind the audio.Recording a private conversation can require everyone’s consent depending on the state or country. Our smart glasses recording laws by state guide covers the US. This is general information, not legal advice.

6. Five checks before you order

Check these five things first, because OXIVUE does not refund a gift that turns out not to suit him.

  1. Eyesight. No prescription lenses on any model. If he wears glasses all day and not contacts, pick another gift.
  2. Phone. The app needs iOS 14+ or Android 9+, paired over Bluetooth 5.4. There is no subscription.
  3. Lens. Sun lens if the trips are daytime and outdoors; clear if he would wear them indoors or after dark; photochromic if he wants one lens that darkens in UV light. The M14 shield cannot be swapped.
  4. Expectations. No display, no video calling, and the camera starts only when he touches it. If he is expecting a screen or a live stream, he will be disappointed.
  5. The terms. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable.

7. Christmas gifts for boyfriend: timing, and how to give it

Christmas gifts for boyfriend searches peak in December, and delivery is the part to plan. US delivery is usually 5–9 business days (international 9–14 after shipment); we can’t guarantee arrival before December 25, so order early. Outside the US the recipient pays any import VAT or duties on delivery. Shipping is free from $99, so any single pair ships free; the shipping policy lists every country we ship to.

  • One for him, one for you. Two or more pairs of eyewear in one order are 50% off all eyewear, which puts two M08 pairs at $149 at checkout, and you can mix models. On a shared trip you each get your own view of the same day.
  • A gift receipt is not a refund route. As the checklist above says, a pair that does not suit him cannot be sent back for a refund, so run the five checks before you order.
  • Give it with the trip attached. A note with the trail, the drive or the weekend you have in mind means the first photos he takes are of a day you planned together.

For the wider checklist on giving camera glasses, see our smart glasses gift guide.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Compare every model on the comparison page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 5 gift rule for boyfriends?

It is a simple way to plan a set of gifts: something he wants, something he needs, something to wear, something to read, and something to do (some versions call the fifth an experience). OXIVUE camera glasses sit across two of those slots. They are something to wear every day, and they fit the something-to-do slot, because the photos they take are of your hikes, drives and trips. Pair them with a planned day out and the gift explains itself.

What things to buy for your boyfriend?

Start from what he already does, not from a list. If you hike, drive or travel together, a pair of camera sunglasses gives him hands-free photos from his own eye level and open-ear music on the way. The OXIVUE M08 is $99 at checkout and the M02C, rated IP65, is $109. If he mostly stays home, games or reads, a different gift will get more use than glasses.

Are camera glasses a good Christmas gift for a boyfriend?

Yes, if four things check out: he does not need prescription lenses all day, his phone runs iOS 14+ or Android 9+, you know which lens or shield he would wear, and you accept the refund terms. US delivery is usually 5–9 business days (international 9–14 after shipment); we can't guarantee arrival before December 25, so order early.

Can he video call through the glasses?

No. The glasses work as a Bluetooth headset for calls, so he can talk hands-free while the phone stays in his pocket, but the camera is not listed as a video source for calls. Photos and clips are captured with a touch on the temple and go to the phone app afterwards. If he wants to stream his view live to someone, these are the wrong gift.

What if the glasses don't suit him?

No refund applies in that case. OXIVUE only refunds or replaces an order damaged in transit; a fault after delivery is repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty, and change of mind, fit or style are not refundable reasons. That makes it worth checking his style, phone and eyesight before you order. Statutory consumer rights where you live still apply.

Is it okay to wear camera glasses on a trip with other people?

Yes, with some etiquette. A capture only starts when he touches the temple, which is a visible gesture. Tell the people you are with that the glasses have a camera, ask before photographing anyone up close, take them off in restrooms, changing areas and anywhere cameras are not allowed, and remember that recording audio of a private conversation can require everyone's consent depending on the state.

Can we get a pair each?

Yes. Two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear, so two M08 pairs come to $149 and two M02C pairs to $159 at checkout, and you can mix models. Shipping is free from $99, so a single pair already ships free. Matching pairs mean both of you get your own view of the same trip.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
  • M14: one-piece shield, so the lens can't be swapped for clear or photochromic.
  • M14: IPX4 covers splash, spray and rain only, and at 52 g it is heavier than the 41–42 g frames.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
