AI eyewear, frame first: lens, weight, then the AI

You will wear an AI eyewear frame for hours before you ever ask it a question, so this guide starts where an optician would: the lens, the weight and the material. Then it explains what the AI layer actually does, where it runs, and where it stops.

1. What counts as AI eyewear

AI eyewear is a normal-looking pair of glasses with electronics in the frame: a small camera, open-ear speakers, microphones, a battery and Bluetooth. The “AI” part is the software you reach through it, such as a voice assistant, live translation and, on some models, visual AI that describes what you are looking at.

The frame itself does capture and sound. The thinking happens in the phone app and online services. That split matters when you shop, because it means two things are true at once: the frame has to be a pair of glasses you are happy to wear all day, and the AI is only as available as your phone and its connection. If you want the mechanics in more depth, our how AI glasses work guide walks through them.

It also helps to know what AI eyewear is not. OXIVUE frames have no display, so nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and save photos and clips to your phone. If a heads-up display is what you are after, read smart glasses with a display first, because that is a different category.

2. Step 1: choose the lens before anything else

Three of the four OXIVUE frames come with a choice of three lenses: Sunglasses (full tint), Photochromic (adapts to light) and Clear (daily wear). The M14 is the exception: it has a fixed one-piece shield that cannot be swapped. The lens decides where and when you will actually wear the glasses, so it decides how often the AI is on your face at all.

  • Sunglasses. The obvious pick if you mainly want the glasses outdoors in daylight: walks, driving in the day, the beach, the golf course. Do not wear a full-tint lens to drive after dark. Our AI sunglasses guide goes deeper on sun lenses.
  • Photochromic. Darkens outdoors and lightens again inside, so one pair can follow you from the street into an office. It is the lens for people who want to wear the glasses from morning to evening without carrying a second pair. Our photochromic smart glasses guide covers how that behaves in practice, including in a car.
  • Clear. For indoor use, evenings and anyone who wants the glasses to read as ordinary frames at a desk or in a meeting.

We do not publish a polarisation or UV rating for these lenses, so do not choose them on that basis. Choose by when you will wear them.

3. Step 2: weight and fit, 41 to 52 g

OXIVUE frames weigh between 41 g and 52 g. The M02C is about 41 g, the lightest of our frames; the M08 and M08C are about 42 g; the M14 sport shield is 52 g. Those grams sit on your nose and ears for hours, which is why weight is the number to check before the camera.

The 41 to 42 g frames are the everyday choice: they are meant to be worn all day like ordinary glasses. The M14 is heavier because it is a one-piece wrap shield built for cycling and skiing, where a frame that stays put at speed matters more than a few grams. If weight is your main concern, our lightweight smart glasses guide compares this in more detail.

On fit: we do not publish frame dimensions for the M08, M02C and M08C. The M14 measures 150 × 56 × 169 mm overall. If you are between sizes or have a wide face, check the frame against a pair you already own before you order, because fit is not a reason we can refund.

4. Step 3: the TR90 frame

All four OXIVUE frames use TR90, a thermoplastic frame material. The M08 and M08C are Italian TR90; the M08C adds gold or silver metal trim for a more formal look; the M14 pairs a TR90 frame with polycarbonate temples and a polycarbonate shield lens.

For a buyer, the frame material shows up as weight and comfort over a long day. We do not publish an impact or safety rating for any frame, so AI eyewear from us is not protective eyewear and should not be used as such. Water ratings also differ by model: the M02C is rated IP65 (dust-tight and protected against water jets, not immersion), the M14 is IPX4 (splash and rain), and the M08 and M08C have no published water rating, so keep them out of heavy rain and spray.

If looking like ordinary glasses is the priority, the M08 and M08C are the frames to look at. Our smart glasses that look like normal glasses guide shows what to look for.

5. Step 4: what the AI layer actually does

Every OXIVUE frame runs its AI features through the free HeyCyan app, with no subscription and no Meta, Facebook or Instagram account. Here is what that covers:

  • Translation. 40+ languages on the M08, M02C and M08C; 139 languages on the M14. Translation pauses after each sentence. Only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone. See how translation works.
  • Voice assistant. Ask a question and hear the answer through the open-ear speakers. You hear the room as well, which is the point of open-ear audio, but it also means some sound leaks at high volume.
  • Visual AI (M02C only).Say “Hey Cyan” and the M02C can describe what you are looking at. If you have low vision, our low-vision guide is honest about what it can and cannot do.
  • Camera. 8 MP on every frame (a Sony IMX219 sensor on the M02C, M08C and M14, with dual stabilisation on the M02C). A photo or clip starts only when you touch the temple, and files go to the phone app.
  • Calls and music. The M08 family is rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls; the M14 is the other way round, 4 hours of listening and 7 hours of calls.

More on the app itself is in our HeyCyan guide, and the wider picture of what the AI in smart glasses does is in AI powered smart glasses.

6. The four OXIVUE frames side by side

All four are AI eyewear in the sense above. They differ in lens, weight, water rating and one or two AI features.

7. Who AI eyewear from us is not for

  • Prescription wearers who need correction all day. No OXIVUE model takes prescription lenses yet. Our prescription smart glasses guide explains the options elsewhere.
  • Anyone who wants text in front of their eyes. There is no display and no captions.
  • Anyone who needs spoken translation for both sides. Only the wearer hears the translated audio.
  • Swimmers. The highest water rating we publish is IP65 on the M02C, which covers water jets, not immersion. The M08 and M08C have no published water rating.
  • Loud environments. Open-ear speakers will not block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.

8. Recording and other people

A camera on your face changes how other people experience you. On OXIVUE frames, nothing records until you touch the temple, so capture is always a deliberate act. Tell people before you photograph or film them, respect places that ban cameras, and remember that recording audio of a conversation can require everyone’s consent depending on where you are. Our smart glasses recording laws by state guide covers the US rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days after shipment, and import VAT and duties outside the US are paid by the recipient. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. Details are on the shipping policy and refund policy pages.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI glasses help vision?

No. AI eyewear does not correct or improve your eyesight, and none of the OXIVUE frames take prescription lenses. What the AI adds is a camera, open-ear audio and app features such as translation and a voice assistant. On the M02C, the Hey Cyan visual AI can describe what you are looking at, but that is a description you hear, not a change to what you see. If you need vision correction all day, keep your prescription glasses.

Are there any AI glasses?

Yes. AI glasses are a category of smart glasses that put a camera, open-ear speakers and microphones in an ordinary-looking frame, with a voice assistant, translation and sometimes visual AI running through a phone app. Several brands make them. OXIVUE is one option: four frames from $99 to $149 at checkout for one pair, with no display and no prescription lenses.

Do AI glasses actually work?

Yes, within limits. On OXIVUE frames, translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone. Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and will not block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.

Can you tell if someone is wearing AI glasses?

Usually, yes. Look for a small camera lens in the corner of the frame and thicker temples, which hold the battery, speakers and microphones. On OXIVUE frames a photo or clip starts only with a touch on the temple, so a hand raised to the side of the glasses is the moment to notice. If you are unsure whether you are being recorded, ask. Wearers should tell people before recording and follow local law.

Is AI eyewear the same as smart glasses?

Mostly, yes. "AI eyewear" is usually used for smart glasses whose main features are a voice assistant, translation or visual AI rather than just Bluetooth audio. Some smart glasses add a display in the lens; OXIVUE frames do not. Ours combine a camera, open-ear speakers and microphones, with the AI features running through the HeyCyan phone app.

Does AI eyewear need a phone?

Yes, for the AI. Translation, the voice assistant, music, calls and getting your photos off the glasses all go through the HeyCyan app on your phone, which needs to be nearby and connected. The app does not need a Meta, Facebook or Instagram account, and there is no subscription. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only the wearer hears the translated audio.

How much do AI eyeglasses cost?

OXIVUE AI eyewear costs $99 to $149 at checkout for a single pair: M08 $99, M02C $109, M08C $119 and M14 $149. Two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear. Shipping is free from $99, so every single pair qualifies. Outside the US, import VAT and duties are paid by the recipient on delivery.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M08C: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
