Where the recurring fee hides

Nobody sells “glasses plus a subscription.” They sell glasses, and then the feature you bought them for turns out to sit behind a plan. There are four usual places, and it is worth checking all four on any frame you are considering — ours included.

1. Cloud storage for what you capture

The most common one. The glasses capture happily, then the footage needs somewhere to live, and the free tier is sized to run out. Ask: where does a photo go by default, and what does it cost when the free allowance fills? 2. The assistant’s premium tier

Voice assistants increasingly have a paid tier, and the interesting capabilities migrate there over time. A frame that leans on a third-party assistant inherits whatever that assistant’s pricing becomes — a decision made by someone else, after you have bought the hardware. The M02C’s “Hey Cyan” wake word and visual AI are included in its $159, with no tier above it.

3. Translation minutes or languages

Translation is expensive to run, so it is a natural place to meter: a handful of free languages with the rest behind a plan, or a monthly minute allowance. This is worth checking carefully if translation is your reason for buying, because it is the feature most likely to be metered and the one people most assume is included. All 40+ languages on the M08 family, and all 139 on the M14, come with the hardware — no per-minute credits.

4. Firmware and feature updates

Rarer, but it exists — new capabilities gated behind a membership while security updates stay free. Ask whether the feature roadmap is included with the hardware. The M14 takes OTA updates over Wi-Fi at no charge; nothing in the range has a membership attached.

The honest limits of “no subscription”

A no-subscription promise is worth something only if the brand is straight about its edges, so here are ours.

• Some features need the app running. Translation is not fully on-device. If the phone is off, the frame is a camera and a speaker.
• Connected products depend on the company. On-device functions — capture, audio, calls — keep working regardless. Service-backed features depend on the service existing. That is true of every connected device sold, and any brand implying otherwise is overpromising.
• Refunds are not offered. Faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind is not refundable. We would rather say so here than surprise you later.

Five checks to run before you pay

In order, and they take about five minutes on any brand’s website — including this one.

• 1. Search the brand’s support sitefor “subscription,” “plan,” and “premium.” A support article is written before the marketing page catches up.
• 2. Open the companion app’s store listing and read the in-app purchase list. It cannot be hidden there — the App Store and Play Store both publish it.
• 3. Ask what happens after the free allowance on the two metered features: translation and storage. Get the number of languages and the number of gigabytes in writing.

• 5. Price the second year, not the first. Do the arithmetic on your own shortlist: any frame carrying a $10/month plan adds $120 a year to its sticker. An OXIVUE M08 costs $149 in year one and $149 in year five.

If the reason you want smart glasses is translation or capture, a metered plan changes the real price of ownership more than the number on the box.
