The camera is not the privacy question

Every discussion of smart glasses arrives at the camera within about a minute, and it is the wrong place to stop. A camera is a sensor: it does what the software behind it is told to do. The question that determines what actually happens to your day is which account the glasses are bound to, because that decides where the data goes and who gets to reason about it.

Two frames with identical sensors can behave completely differently here. One routes captures through a social platform tied to your real identity. The other drops them onto your phone. Same hardware, different consequence.

What a platform login binds, in four steps

The binding is not one decision. It is four, and they happen in order — each one built on the last, which is why unpicking it later is harder than it looks at setup.

Step 1. Your device is bound to a social identity

When setup requires a platform login, the glasses become an authenticated device on your profile — a real-name identity the platform already holds. That association is durable, and it is not something you unpick later by changing a setting. On OXIVUE frames this step does not exist: pairing is a free companion app plus a Bluetooth 5.4 handshake, on iOS 14+ or Android 9+.

Step 2. Your captures are bound to their cloud

Platform-bound glasses commonly upload for processing — that is often how the clever features work. The relevant question is not whether the company is trustworthy but whether the trip is mandatory. If your only path to a photo is through their servers, there is no version of the product where it isn’t. OXIVUE captures land in the companion app on your phone: 8 MP stills and 1080p video, with the M14 moving files by direct Wi-Fi transfer. There is no mandatory cloud tier.

Step 3. An ad profile is bound to what you see

Step 1 plus Step 2 makes this one trivial: an identity and a stream of what that identity looked at, held by a company whose revenue is advertising. An assistant tied to that account also answers with the benefit of everything the account knows — genuinely useful, and it means the thing on your face is reasoning about you using material you supplied for a different purpose. Step 4. You are bound to one ecosystem

The end state is lock-in: leaving the platform now costs you a $300+ piece of hardware, because the account was the setup requirement rather than a convenience. Structural comparison, not a spec-sheet fight — platform features change every season, but whether an account is mandatory is a design decision that tends to stay put. What we don’t claim

A privacy page is only useful if it marks its own limits, so here are ours plainly:

• Not everything is on-device. Translation calls out to a service. If that matters to your threat model, it should factor into your decision.
• We are an ecommerce business. Buying from us means an email address, an address, and a payment processor, and our site runs ordinary analytics. Our privacy policy spells out what that involves.
• No account still means etiquette. Not being tied to a social platform does not make a camera invisible to the people around you. Consent is a separate obligation and it does not go away.

Who this matters to

• People who left the platforms. Deleting an account should not cost you a category of hardware.

Bottom line

None of the four bindings above apply: no social account, no subscription, no ad profile built from what your glasses see, nothing to leave.
