Smart glasses for daily use: choosing a pair to wear all day.

A smart frame you wear for an hour and a smart frame you wear from breakfast to dinner are judged by different rules. This guide covers the five that matter for all-day wear: weight, lens, battery, charging and water rating. Then it says which OXIVUE frame fits which kind of day, and what none of them can do.

The search results for this question are mostly product grids and forum threads, and the threads keep asking the same thing: will I actually keep wearing them? That depends far less on the feature list than on five plain things. Here they are in the order they tend to decide it.

1. Weight: the thing you notice by noon

A camera, speakers and a battery add weight, so every smart frame is heavier than the glasses you are used to. The difference you feel by mid-afternoon is on the bridge of your nose and behind your ears. A few grams matter more over eight hours than over one.

  • M02C · ~41 g — our lightest camera frame.
  • M08 and M08C · ~42 g — the same TR90 family, effectively the same feel.
  • M14 · 52 g — a one-piece wrap shield built to stay put at speed. Ten grams more is fine on a ride and noticeable at a desk.

2. A lens you can keep on indoors

This is the decision people get wrong most often. A full-tint sunglasses lens is perfect outside and the reason a pair gets left in a bag the moment you walk into an office, a shop or a train. If you want to wear the frame all day, the lens has to work indoors.

The M08 family (M08, M02C, M08C) offers three lenses on every frame:

  • Clear — wear it anywhere, all day. The default for office and indoor days.
  • Photochromic — clear-ish indoors, darkens in ultraviolet light outdoors. The best single lens if your day moves between inside and out. Note that it darkens less behind a car windscreen, which blocks much of the UV. More in the photochromic guide.
  • Sunglasses — full tint. Right for outdoor days: walking, hiking, driving in bright sun, an afternoon by the water.

The M14 is different: its lens is a fixed polycarbonate shield in four colourways (Nero smoke, Azzurro blue mirror, Ghiaccio ice-blue mirror, Tramonto sunset-red mirror), and it cannot be swapped. A mirrored wrap shield is a sport look, so we treat the M14 as a skiing and cycling frame rather than an everyday one.

Prescription, said plainly: no OXIVUE model supports prescription lenses. If you need vision correction all day, these cannot replace your glasses. Contact-lens wearers can use the Clear or Photochromic lens as a daily frame.

3. Battery across a real day

No smart frame in this price range runs continuous audio from morning to night, and it is better to know that before you buy than to find out at 4 pm.

  • M08 and M08C: ~300 mAh, rated 7 h listening or 4 h calls.
  • M02C: ~290 mAh in the same family design.
  • M14: 300 mAh, rated the other way round: 4 h listening or 7 h calls.

What that means in practice: a commute podcast, a couple of calls, some photos and a walk at lunch fit comfortably in a charge. Music in your ears for a whole working day does not. Video is the heaviest draw, so film moments rather than whole mornings. If calls are most of your day, the M14’s split suits that pattern, but it brings the sport-frame weight and lens with it.

4. Charging you will actually do

A daily frame needs a charging routine that takes no effort, because the one you forget is the one that leaves you with a dead pair. The M08 family charges in about 2 hours. The M02C uses a magnetic pogo connector that snaps on like a pen cap, which is the easiest to live with if you drop the frame on the charger at your desk or by the bed. The M14 also charges in about 2 hours.

The habit that works for most people: charge overnight, and top up for half an hour at lunch on heavy-audio days.

5. Rain and sweat

You do not plan to get your glasses wet on an ordinary day, but an ordinary day includes rain on the walk home and a hot commute.

  • M02C · IP65 — dust-tight and rated against water jets. The highest rating in our range, and the best fit for a frame that goes everywhere. It is still not a swimming rating: never submerge it.
  • M14 · IPX4 — splash resistant: rain, sweat, spray.
  • M08 and M08C — no published water rating. Wipe them dry and keep them out of heavy rain.

Water damage beyond a frame’s rating is excluded from the 2-year warranty, so the rating is worth taking seriously.

Which frame for which day

  1. M02C · $159 — if you want one pair for every day. The lightest frame, the only IP65 rating, magnetic charging and a lens choice that covers indoor and outdoor. Pick Photochromic if your day moves between the two, Clear if it is mostly indoors.
  2. M08C · $169 — for office days. Gold or silver trim reads as a considered frame in a meeting, and a Clear or Photochromic lens keeps it on your face from the desk to the client lunch. Good for golf weekends too.
  3. M08 sunglasses · $149 — for outdoor days. If your daily wear is mostly outside, walking the dog, hiking, driving, fishing, the sun lens is the right one and the M08 is the lowest price in the range.
  4. M14 · $199 — not a daily frame. Buy it for skiing and cycling, where a 52 g wrap shield that stays put is the point.

What none of them do

  • No display. Nothing appears in front of your eyes. Translation shows on your phone, and translation audio is heard only by you, the wearer.
  • No prescription lenses on any model.
  • Not a whole day of continuous audio. Plan around the battery figures above.
  • A visible camera. Capture is a deliberate touch, not always-on, but some places ban cameras outright. Audio recording laws in the US are covered in our recording laws by state guide.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best smart glasses for everyday use?

For most people, a light frame with a lens you can wear indoors. Our pick for daily wear is the OXIVUE M02C at $159: about 41 g, IP65-rated against dust and water jets, magnetic charging, and a choice of Clear, Photochromic or Sunglasses lenses. For office days the M08C at $169 adds gold or silver trim; for outdoor days the M08 with a sun lens is $149. The 52 g M14 at $199 is a sport shield, not a daily frame.

Do smart glasses actually work for everyday use?

Yes, for the jobs they are built for: open-ear music and calls, hands-free 8 MP photos and short clips, and live translation through the companion app. They are not a phone replacement. OXIVUE frames have no display, so nothing appears in front of your eyes, and the battery will not cover a full day of continuous audio. Used in bursts across the day, they work well.

Is there a monthly fee for smart glasses?

Not for OXIVUE. The frames work with a free companion app and there is no subscription. You pay once for the glasses: M08 $149, M02C $159, M08C $169 or M14 $199.

What are the downsides of smart glasses?

Battery life is the main one: the M08 and M08C are rated about 7 hours of listening or 4 hours of calls per charge, so continuous audio will not last from morning to night. Smart frames are also slightly heavier than plain glasses, they cannot take prescription lenses (no OXIVUE model supports them), and a visible camera means some places and people will ask you to take them off.

Can I wear smart glasses with my prescription?

Not with OXIVUE. No model in the range supports prescription lenses. If you need correction every waking hour, these cannot be your only pair of glasses. Contact-lens wearers can use the Clear or Photochromic lens on the M08 family as their daily frame.

Why are smart glasses banned in some places?

Because they carry a camera. Gyms, changing rooms, hospitals, cinemas, exam halls and some workplaces restrict cameras of any kind, and smart glasses fall under those rules. Audio recording also has its own law in the US, where some states require everyone in a private conversation to consent. Capture on OXIVUE frames is a deliberate touch, not always-on, but in camera-free places the simple rule is to take them off.

Can I watch Netflix on smart glasses?

Not on OXIVUE frames. None of them has a display, so there is no screen to watch video on. You can listen to the audio of whatever plays on your phone through the open-ear speakers. Display glasses are a different product category with different weight and battery trade-offs.

Can other people hear what I am listening to?

At normal volume the open-ear speakers are aimed at your ears, which is why the M02C can be worn in a quiet office. Translation audio is heard only by you, the wearer; the other person reads the translation on your phone or hears you speak it. Turn the volume right up in a silent room and people nearby may hear some sound.

How long does it take to charge, and how?

The M08 family charges in about 2 hours. The M02C uses a magnetic pogo connector that snaps on, which is the easiest to live with if you top up at your desk or by the bed. The M14 also charges in about 2 hours. A habit that works: charge overnight and give the frame a short top-up at lunch on heavy-audio days.

How fast do they ship, and what if something goes wrong?

US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days and international orders in 9 to 14 business days, with free shipping from $99. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order that arrives damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. A fault after delivery is covered by the 2-year warranty on eyewear through repair or replacement.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
  • M08C: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
