Oakley Meta glasses for golf: what HSTN and Vanguard do on a round
The videos ranking for this search show a golfer asking for a yardage and getting it in his ear. That is real, it arrived in July 2026, and it comes from a phone app rather than the glasses. This page sets out what each Oakley Meta frame does on a round, what it costs on meta.com, what the yardage apps need, and where a $119 pair of camera glasses honestly fits.

1. What Oakley Meta glasses do on a round
Strip away the ad and the Oakley Meta frame does four things on a golf course, all of them taken from Meta’s own golf page on October 7, 2026. It records your swing from your eyeline with a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, in up to 3K video. It plays music and takes calls through open-ear speakers, so you still hear your group. It answers Meta AI questions by voice, and the examples Meta gives for golf are weather and wind conditions. And on the HSTN it puts a Prizm Dark Golflens in front of your eyes, which Meta’s golf page describes as giving the colour clarity to read the course.
None of that is a rangefinder. What changed in July 2026 is that Meta AI can now read out distances it gets from a golf app on your phone, which is the part the videos in the search results are showing. That deserves its own section, because it carries requirements the ads do not mention.
For the broader question of what any camera glasses can and cannot do on a course, including why eyeline video is not a swing-analysis angle, see smart glasses for golf. This page stays on the Oakley Meta pair.
2. Yardages by voice: 18Birdies and Arccos
On July 1, 2026 Meta announced integrations with two golf apps. With 18Birdiesyou say “Hey Meta, start a round of golf” and, in Meta’s words, get “spoken yardages to the green, hazard reminders, and tee-box guidance,” and can log scores and putts by voice. With Arccosyou get “personalized club recommendations based on your real shot history, weather-adjusted ‘Plays Like’ distances, and course strategy,” all read aloud.
The requirements, from Meta’s help page on the same date:
- Glasses: Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta HSTN or Oakley Meta Vanguard. Meta recommends Prizm Golf lenses but does not require them.
- Phone and software: the Meta AI app at version 279 or later, glasses firmware 126 or later, and the phone connected to the glasses. The app does the GPS and the course data; the glasses are the microphone and the speaker.
- An app on top: 18Birdies, which Meta lists as free with a premium tier for additional features, or Arccos Golf, which needs its game-tracking subscription and its own hardware, with 6 months free when you link it to the glasses.
- Where:rolling out in the US and Canada. If you play elsewhere, check Meta’s page before you buy for this feature.
In plain terms: the entry route to spoken yardages is a $399 HSTN plus the free 18Birdies tier. Club recommendations and Plays Like distances are an Arccos subscription on top. That is still a phone-GPS yardage, not a laser, so it is the same number your 18Birdies app would show on screen, delivered to your ear so the phone stays in the bag.
3. HSTN or Vanguard for golf?
The golf features are the same on both frames. The differences are the frame, the lens, the water rating and the price. Every Oakley Meta figure below is from meta.com on October 7, 2026; we have not tested either pair. The OXIVUE column is from our own product data.

For golf specifically, the HSTN is the more natural pick of the two. It is the frame Meta pairs with the Prizm Dark Golf lens, it looks like sunglasses rather than cycling kit in the grill room, and it is the one that takes a prescription. The Vanguard earns its extra $100 when you also ride or run in rain, because IP67 and the Garmin link are built for that, not for a four-hour walk in good weather. We go deeper on each in our Oakley Meta HSTN guide and our Oakley Meta Vanguard guide.
4. What Oakley Meta for golf actually costs
The frame price is only the first line. Here is the honest bill for a golfer in the US, with the Meta figures as listed on October 7, 2026:
- HSTN with Prizm Dark Golf: $399. Other HSTN lenses are priced differently; our HSTN guide lists each one.
- Vanguard: from $499.
- Yardages: $0 with the free 18Birdies tier, or 18Birdies premium for its extra features. Arccos needs its subscription and sensors; Meta gives 6 months free when linked. We do not quote the app prices here because they are set by the apps, not by Meta, and change.
- Prescription: an extra cost on the HSTN only.
So a golfer who wants spoken yardages is looking at $399 plus an app, and one who wants club advice from shot history is adding a subscription on top of that. That is the comparison to hold in mind when a $119 pair of camera glasses comes up.
5. Where the OXIVUE M08C fits, and where it does not
The OXIVUE M08C is the frame we point golfers to, and it is important to say first what it does not do: no yardages, no club recommendations, no weather by voice, no display. If any of those is why you searched for Oakley Meta glasses for golf, buy the HSTN.
What it does is the other half of a round. It costs $119 at checkout as a single pair (listed at $169). It has an 8 MP Sony IMX219 camera in the frame corner that starts a photo or clip with a touch on the temple, so the swing you want to look at later, the lie you argued about and the group on the 18th tee are captured from where you stood. It has open-ear directional speakers and microphones for music and calls, Bluetooth 5.4, and a 7-hour listening, 4-hour call rating that covers a slow round with time left. The TR90 frame weighs about 42 g and comes with gold or silver metal trim, which is why it reads as dress eyewear rather than sports equipment.
- Lens. Sun, photochromic or clear. There is no golf-specific contrast tint. The photochromic lens is the flexible choice for a round that moves between open fairways and tree-lined holes, and it pushes up onto your head for putting like any other pair.
- Water. The M08C has no published water rating, so sweat and a passing shower are a judgement call and a downpour is not. If you want a rating, the OXIVUE M02C is IP65 and costs $109, though it has no metal trim.
- Translation. The HeyCyan app translates 40+ languages, which is useful on a golf trip abroad. You hear the translation; the other person reads the reply on your phone, and it pauses after each sentence.
- Phone. Music, calls, translation and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. There is no subscription.
The M08 is the same platform without the trim at $99, and the full line is on the comparison page. Our broader Oakley Meta glasses guide covers the range beyond golf.
6. Club policy, competition and playing partners
Two things apply to any camera glasses on a course, Oakley Meta or ours. First, many clubs have their own policy on photography and phones on the course, and a camera worn on your face is exactly what that policy is about. Ask the pro shop before your first round and, in a competition, read the committee’s local rules for the event; we do not restate course or competition rules here because they differ by club and change. Second, recording playing partners is a consent question: tell your group you are wearing a camera, and do not record people who have asked you not to. Local law on recording applies, and this is general information, not legal advice.
On both brands capture starts with a visible action, a touch on the temple on OXIVUE frames, and nothing records unless you start it. Keep the volume low on the open-ear speakers and your group will hear the starter, the shout of fore and very little of your playlist.
Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Full details are on the shipping policy and warranty pages.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use Oakley Meta glasses for golf?
Yes. On meta.com (checked October 7, 2026) Oakley Meta markets both frames to golfers: a 12 MP camera for swing clips from your eyeline, open-ear audio, Meta AI for weather and wind by voice, and a Prizm Dark Golf lens on the HSTN. Since July 2026, linking the 18Birdies or Arccos app adds spoken yardages to the green and, with Arccos, club recommendations. The yardages come from the phone app, not from a rangefinder in the frame, and the integration is rolling out in the US and Canada.
Which Oakley glasses are best for golf?
Between the two Oakley Meta frames, the HSTN at $399 is the one Meta pairs with the Prizm Dark Golf lens, and it takes prescription lenses in a -6.00 to +4.00 range; it is IPX4, so splashes only. The Vanguard at $499 is a wrap shield rated IP67 with longer battery, no prescription option and a sportier look. For most golfers who walk a round in regular sunglasses, the HSTN is the closer fit. Prices are what meta.com listed on October 7, 2026.
Which Meta glasses are best for golf?
Meta's golf help page lists Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta HSTN and Oakley Meta Vanguard as compatible with the 18Birdies and Arccos integrations, with Prizm Golf lenses recommended. So the golf features are the same across the range; the choice is frame shape, lens and water rating. Of the two Oakley frames, the HSTN is the one with the golf-specific lens and a prescription option. We have not tested any of them.
Can you use the Oakley Meta for sports?
Both Oakley Meta frames are sold as performance glasses. The Vanguard is the sport-first design: IP67, which Meta describes as dust- and water-resistant up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, a Garmin link for performance metrics with a compatible Garmin device sold separately, and up to 9 hours of typical use. The HSTN is IPX4 for splashes and sweat and suits golf, walking and everyday wear more than running in rain. Figures from meta.com, October 7, 2026.
Do Oakley Meta glasses give yardages?
Not on their own. The frame has no rangefinder. Yardages arrive through a linked golf app: 18Birdies gives spoken yardages to the green, hazard reminders and tee-box guidance, and Arccos adds club recommendations and weather-adjusted Plays Like distances, all read aloud by Meta AI. You need the Meta AI app, current firmware and either app; Arccos also needs its own game-tracking subscription and sensors. Meta announced this on July 1, 2026.
Do you need a subscription for Oakley Meta golf features?
The glasses and Meta AI do not need one. Meta's help page says 18Birdies is free with a premium tier for additional features, and that Arccos Golf needs its game-tracking subscription and hardware, with 6 months free when you link it to the glasses. So you can get spoken yardages at no extra cost with 18Birdies, while the Arccos club recommendations are a paid layer on top of the $399 or $499 frames.
Is the OXIVUE M08C a lower-cost way to do the same thing?
For part of it. The M08C costs $119 at checkout and covers swing and group clips from your eyeline with an 8 MP Sony IMX219 camera, music and calls through open-ear speakers, and translation through the HeyCyan app. It gives no yardages, no club advice and no weather by voice, and it has no published water rating. If spoken yardages are the reason you are shopping, it is not a substitute; if you want capture and audio in a frame that passes a clubhouse dress code, it does that job for $280 less than the HSTN.
How fast does OXIVUE ship, and what if something goes wrong?
US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days and international orders in 9 to 14 business days after shipment, with free shipping from $99, so a single pair qualifies. We ship to 39 countries and the recipient pays any import VAT or duties outside the US. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable.
What these frames won’t do
- No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
- No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
- Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
- Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
- M08C: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
