How to turn on Meta glasses, and what to do when they won’t

How to turn on Meta glasses is a one-line answer once you know where the switch is, and a longer one when nothing lights up. This page puts Meta's own help-center steps in one place: the power switch, turning them off, what each LED colour means, restart and force restart, and the order to work through when the glasses will not power up.

1. Where the power switch is on Meta glasses

The power switch is on the inside of the left arm, near the hinge. Meta’s help page “How to turn AI glasses on or off” (checked October 19, 2026) puts it on “the left inner arm of the glasses, near the hinge” for Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN glasses. Because it sits on the inner face of the arm, you only see it with the arms unfolded.

It is a slide switch rather than a push button. Meta’s pairing page describes the same control as “the power button on the left frame” and says to slide it “towards the front of the glasses.” Front, lenses, forward: all three phrases on Meta’s pages mean the same position, which is on.

Meta’s page has separate tabs for Oakley Meta Vanguard and for the model line it calls Meta Glasses, and its own page for Meta Ray-Ban Display. If you own one of those, read section 6 before you start sliding things.

2. How to turn Meta glasses on and off

On is towards the lenses; off is towards the back of the glasses. These are Meta’s steps for Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN, checked October 19, 2026.

  1. Unfold the arms so you can see the inner face of the left arm near the hinge.
  2. Slide the power switch towards the lenses.Meta says the notification LED “will blink while your glasses turn on. When it turns solid green, you’re ready to continue.”
  3. To turn them off, slide the switch towards the back of the glasses. The notification LED “will blink red to signal that the glasses are turning off.”

If you switch them on and nothing blinks at all, do not keep sliding the switch back and forth. Go to the charging checks in section 4: Meta’s Ray-Ban Display page says glasses that do nothing when switched on may be out of battery.

Turning them on is only half of first-time setup. The glasses then have to be paired with the Meta AI app on your phone, and Meta’s pairing steps ask you to put the switched-on glasses back into the case until its LED flashes blue. Our guide to connecting Meta glasses to an iPhone walks through pairing, the account requirement and the factory reset.

3. What the lights on Meta glasses mean

There are two lights to read: the notification LED on the glasses and the LED on the front of the charging case. Meta’s LED page (checked October 19, 2026) says the notification LED sits “near the right frame” and changes colour for power, capture, voice controls and calls. The table collects every colour Meta’s power, charging and pairing pages spell out.

With the glasses docked, press the button on the back of the case to show their charge level on the case LED. The complete notification-LED library lives in the Meta AI app: tap Glasses in the top right, then See all next to Learn and explore, then Gestures and LEDs, then Notification LED. Colours for capture and calls are listed there rather than on the help pages, so we do not repeat them.

4. Meta glasses not turning on: the order to check

Start with charge. Meta’s Ray-Ban Display page says it outright for that model (“your glasses may be out of battery”), and its pairing-troubleshooting page asks you to charge the glasses “for at least one hour or until case LED is green”. Work through these steps in order, all taken from Meta’s help center and checked October 19, 2026.

  1. Check the switch position. It should be slid towards the lenses. If you are unsure, slide it back, wait a few seconds and slide it forward again.
  2. Seat the glasses in the case properly.Meta says the nose bridge must connect with the charging port inside the case and that “this is the only way to charge the glasses.” The case LED blinking after you dock them and close the lid is Meta’s sign that charging has started.
  3. Make sure the case itself has charge. Take the glasses out and look at the case LED: blinking orange means the case battery is low. Charge the case with a USB-C cable plugged into the bottom of the case and a wall adapter.
  4. Try another power adapter. Meta notes that some adapters are not compatible with the case and can cause a persistent pulsing orange or green pattern and a missing charging icon in the app.
  5. Give it time. Leave them docked for at least an hour, or until the case LED turns green, before deciding the glasses are dead.
  6. Restart, then force restart. The steps are in section 5.
  7. Factory reset as a last resort.Meta warns that a factory reset “will delete all captures on your glasses” and means pairing them again, so save your photos first. The gesture is in our Meta pairing and reset guide.
  8. Contact Meta.A blinking red case LED that will not clear is a charging error. Meta says it is “not possible to replace the battery inside your glasses or charging case,” so a battery fault is a warranty matter. Our Meta glasses warranty guidecovers what Meta’s warranty includes and how to claim.

If your glasses switch on but die quickly, that is a battery-life question rather than a power one; see Meta glasses battery life for the hours Meta publishes per model.

5. How to restart and force restart Meta glasses

A restart takes a few seconds and deletes nothing. Meta’s restart page (checked October 19, 2026) gives these steps for Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta HSTN and Meta Glasses.

Restart: slide the power button back to switch the glasses off, wait a few seconds, then slide it forward to turn them back on.

Force restart, for glasses that are frozen or unresponsive:

  1. Slide the power button back to switch the glasses off.
  2. Press and hold the capture button.
  3. While you hold it, slide the power button forward to turn the glasses back on.
  4. Release the capture button “as soon as the status LED turns red.”
  5. “If the status LED doesn’t turn red, slide the power button back and repeat these steps.”

Meta’s pairing-troubleshooting page also recommends a force restart when the LED on the glasses keeps blinking white during pairing. A factory reset is a different, heavier step that erases captures; do not confuse the two.

6. Meta Ray-Ban Display and Oakley Meta Vanguard

Meta Ray-Ban Display uses the same direction, and Oakley Meta Vanguard restarts differently. On Meta’s Display page (checked October 19, 2026), the power switch is “on the arm of your glasses”: push it toward the lenses to turn them on and away from the lenses to turn them off. Meta adds that “a red line next to the switch means your glasses are off,” and that if nothing happens when you push the switch toward the lenses, the glasses may be out of battery and should go back in their charging case.

For Oakley Meta Vanguard, Meta’s restart page says the glasses “restart differently from the others” and shows the method in a video, and its on/off page has a separate Vanguard tab. We could not read the text of that tab on October 19, 2026, so we do not repeat it here; open Meta’s page and pick the Vanguard tab rather than using the Ray-Ban steps above. The same applies to the Meta Glasses tab. For the wider picture of how the hardware and app fit together, see how Meta glasses work.

7. If you are still choosing glasses

Everything above is Meta’s procedure for Meta hardware. OXIVUE publishes this page and makes a different set of camera glasses, so for clarity: none of Meta’s switch positions, LED colours or reset gestures should be assumed to apply to our frames. They work with the HeyCyan phone app instead of the Meta AI app and do not need a Meta, Facebook or Instagram account.

The OXIVUE M08 is $99 at checkout for one pair (listed $149). It has an 8 MP camera, open-ear speakers and microphones, Bluetooth 5.4, and is rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls. It weighs about 42 gand comes with a sunglasses, photochromic or clear lens. Capture starts with a touch on the temple, and translation of 40+ languages runs through the app on your phone. Its limits are plain: no display, no prescription lenses and no published water rating. If you want to compare it with Meta’s range first, start with Ray-Ban Meta alternatives or the full comparison page. For questions about an OXIVUE frame you already own, use our support page.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days, and import VAT or duties outside the US are paid by the recipient. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. Details are on the warranty page and the return policy.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the power button on Meta glasses?

On the inside of the left arm, near the hinge. Meta's help center (checked October 19, 2026) says the power switch for Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN glasses sits on the left inner arm, close to the hinge, so you only see it when the arms are open. It is a slide switch, not a press button: towards the lenses is on, towards the back of the glasses is off. Meta Ray-Ban Display also uses a switch on the arm.

How do I activate Meta glasses for the first time?

Turn them on, then pair them. Slide the power switch towards the lenses, put the glasses back in the case with the nose bridge touching the charging port, and wait for the case LED to flash blue. Then open the Meta AI app, tap Glasses in the top right and tap Add. If the LED does not flash blue, Meta says to hold the button on the back of the case for at least 5 seconds.

Why won't my Meta glasses turn on?

Check the charge first. Meta's pages (checked October 19, 2026) point first to charging: dock the glasses so the nose bridge meets the charging port, which Meta calls the only way to charge them, and leave them at least one hour or until the case LED is green. A red blinking case LED means a charging error. If they still do nothing, restart them, then force restart, and contact Meta support if that fails.

How do I turn off Meta glasses Gen 2?

Slide the power switch towards the back of the glasses. Meta's on/off page (checked October 19, 2026) groups all Ray-Ban Meta glasses with Oakley Meta HSTN and gives no separate Gen 2 steps: the switch is on the left inner arm near the hinge, and the notification LED blinks red to show the glasses are turning off.

How do I reboot or force restart Meta glasses?

Two ways. A restart: slide the power switch back, wait a few seconds, slide it forward. A force restart, for frozen glasses: switch off, press and hold the capture button, slide the switch forward while holding it, and let go as soon as the status LED turns red. If it does not turn red, Meta says to switch off and repeat. Oakley Meta Vanguard restarts differently; follow its own tab on Meta's page.

What do the lights on Meta glasses mean?

There are two lights to read. The notification LED near the right frame blinks while the glasses start and turns solid green when they are ready; it blinks red when they switch off. The case LED shows charge: with the glasses docked, solid green means fully charged, solid orange means charging and blinking red means a charging error. Flashing blue on the case means ready to pair. Meta's app has the full LED library.

How do I turn on my smart glasses if they are not Meta?

Use that brand's own instructions, because power controls differ by maker. The steps on this page come from Meta's help center and apply to Meta glasses only. OXIVUE frames, for example, are a separate brand that work with the HeyCyan phone app rather than the Meta AI app, so Meta's switch positions, LED colours and reset gestures do not carry over. For an OXIVUE frame, ask us through the support page.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
