Gifts for commuters: audio sunglasses that keep the ears free.

Most commuter gift lists are a pile of mugs, chargers and travel pillows. This one is about a single item a commuter uses on the way in and the way home: sunglasses with open-ear speakers, so calls and podcasts come without earbuds and traffic stays audible. Two frames, two price points, and what to check before you buy for someone else.

1. Why audio sunglasses suit a commuter

A commute is the part of the day when people want sound and need to hear. Earbuds give the first and take away the second: a sealed ear misses the car behind, the bike bell and the platform announcement. Open-ear speakers in the temples play calls, music and podcasts toward the ear without covering it, so the street stays audible. Microphones in the frame handle calls, and the phone stays in a pocket.

The M08 and M02C are also ordinary-looking two-lens sunglasses, which matters for a gift: the person wears them because they need sunglasses for the drive or ride home anyway. Each has an 8 MP camera that only records when you touch the temple, and Bluetooth 5.4.

On price: for one pair, the M08 comes to $99 at checkout and the M02C to $109. Prices checked 2026-10-05; checkout price may change. If you are buying for two commuters, two or more pairs are 50% off all eyewear, so an M08 and an M02C together come to $154.

Lens to chooseSunglasses (full tint), Photochromic or Clear
  • Drives to work: M08 with the full-tint sun lens. Windscreens block much of the UV that makes photochromic lenses darken, so a fixed tint works better in a car.
  • Walks, whatever the weather: M02C. IP65 is the only water rating in this pair.
  • Cycles to work: M14, the wrap-around sports frame covered in section 5.
  • Train, bus or underground: either. If much of the commute is indoors or after dark, the Clear or Photochromic lens is the more practical choice than full tint.

3. M08 ($99 at checkout): drivers and walkers

The M08 is the simpler gift. On the Sunglasses lens it is a plain pair of dark glasses, about 42 g in TR90, with open-ear speakers rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls. Calls go through the frame microphones, so a driver can talk hands-free with the phone out of reach.

It has no published water rating, so it is the better fit for someone who drives, walks a dry route or rides the train, rather than someone walking in the rain.

4. M02C ($109 at checkout): rain and walking

The M02C costs $10 more at checkout and is the one for a walk to work in any weather. It is rated IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets, which covers rain and spray but not dropping it in water. It weighs about 41 g, charges with a magnetic connector, and has a Sony IMX219 sensor with dual stabilisation.

It is also the only OXIVUE model with the “Hey Cyan” wake word and visual AI, which can tell the wearer about what they are looking at.

5. M14 ($149 at checkout): for someone who cycles to work

For a bike commute, the M14 is the frame built for it: a one-piece wrap-around shield at 52 g, rated IPX4 for splashes and sweat, with an 8 MP Sony IMX219 camera. Its battery is the reverse of the M08: 4 hours of listening and 7 hours of calls. It is a sports frame, not a pair of everyday sunglasses, and its shield is fixed, so there is no Clear or Photochromic option; you choose a colourway instead.

6. Check these before you buy for someone else

  • Prescription. No OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses. If the person needs glasses to drive or to see the road, this is not the right gift.
  • Fit. The frame measures 52-18-145, medium-to-large. Compare it with the numbers inside the temple of a pair they already wear. See the fit guide.
  • Phone. Audio and calls work over Bluetooth. Translation and the AI features run through the free HeyCyan app on their phone and need a connection.
  • No display. Nothing appears in the lens; everything is audio, and the phone shows the rest.
  • Camera at work.If they would wear them into an office, recording people may require consent depending on the state and the workplace’s policy. Our recording laws guide explains the basics.
  • No refunds. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement.

7. Audio on the road: check local rules

Some states and cities restrict wearing headphones or earpieces while driving or cycling. Open-ear speakers do not sit in the ear, but that does not answer the question everywhere, so it is worth checking the rules where the person commutes. On the road, keep the volume low enough to hear traffic, use the glasses for calls and directions, and leave the camera alone while moving. Our guide can you drive with smart glasses? covers lenses, night driving and the legal side.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free US shipping on orders of $99 or more, so every pair on this page ships free within the US. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What are some must-haves for commuters?

Most commuters rely on the same few things: a way to take calls and listen without blocking out traffic, a sun lens for the low sun on the drive or ride home, something that copes with rain, and a phone that stays in the pocket. A pair of open-ear audio sunglasses covers the first, second and fourth in one item. The OXIVUE M08 does that at $99 at checkout, and the M02C at $109 adds an IP65 rating for wet commutes.

What is a good gift for someone who commutes every day?

Something they will use twice a day. Audio sunglasses fit that: they replace earbuds for calls and podcasts while leaving the ears open to traffic and announcements, and they are the sunglasses they would wear anyway. Choose the M08 ($99 at checkout) for a driver or train commuter, the M02C ($109) for someone who walks in the rain, and the M14 ($149) for someone who cycles to work. Check that they do not need prescription lenses first, because no OXIVUE frame takes them.

What is a good gift for someone who travels a lot?

For frequent travellers, one item that does several jobs saves bag space. Both OXIVUE frames combine sunglasses, open-ear audio for calls and an 8 MP camera for hands-free photos, and the free HeyCyan app adds translation in 40+ languages with your phone and a connection. The translated audio is heard only by the wearer; the other person reads the reply on the phone. Our travel guide covers this in more depth.

Is it legal to wear audio glasses while driving or cycling?

Rules differ by state and city, and some places restrict wearing headphones or earpieces while driving or cycling. Open-ear speakers sit outside the ear rather than in it, but that does not settle the question everywhere, so check the local rules where the person commutes. On the road, use them for calls and directions at a sensible volume and leave the camera alone while moving. Our driving guide goes into the details.

Will they fit someone else's face?

The M08 and M02C share a two-lens TR90 frame measured 52-18-145 (lens 52 mm, bridge 18 mm, temple 145 mm), which suits medium-to-large faces. The easiest check is to look inside the temple of a pair of glasses the person already wears and compare the three numbers. Our fit guide has the full measurements.

Can I return them if the gift does not suit?

No. OXIVUE does not offer refunds; the one exception is an order that arrives damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. A fault after delivery is covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. That is why it is worth checking fit, prescription and phone use before you buy a pair for someone else.

How long does delivery take before a holiday?

US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days and international orders in 9 to 14 business days. Free US shipping applies to orders of $99 or more, so every single pair on this page ships free within the US. Count business days, not calendar days, and allow extra time around public holidays.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
