Thanksgiving gifts for friends, sorted by the kind of friend

Thanksgiving gifts for friends work best when they are small, personal and a little unexpected. The easiest way to choose is to start from what your friend actually does with their weekends. This guide sorts ideas by kind of friend (the hiker, the commuter, the cyclist, the music lover) with a small thank-you for each and one bigger gift for a close friend.

1. Start small: the thank-you comes first

A Thanksgiving gift between friends can cost little and still say a lot. The pages that rank for this search are full of food baskets, flowers and handmade gifts for a reason: Thanksgiving is about gratitude, and a friend gift lands best when it feels like a thank-you rather than an early round of holiday shopping.

  • A specific note. Name the thing you are grateful for: the airport run, the late-night call, the help with the move. It is the part people keep.
  • Something you made. A loaf, a jar of spiced nuts, a pie for their own table, a playlist. Check allergies before you bake.
  • Something they use up. Good coffee or tea, a candle, a favourite snack, a bottle of what they drink if they drink.
  • An experience together. A walk, a matinee, a cooking night. Shared time is a gift that needs no wrapping.

For a close friend, or a group of friends you want to thank together, you can add one bigger, useful gift. The rest of this guide is about matching that gift to the friend.

2. The hiker friend

A hiker friend values light, useful things they will actually carry. Small ideas: a trail snack bag you assembled, wool socks, a printed map of a trail you did together, a plan for a post-Thanksgiving walk to work off the meal.

The bigger idea: the OXIVUE M02C, $109 at checkout. It is rated IP65, which covers dust and water jets (not immersion), so a shower on the ridge is fine but a river crossing is not. It weighs about 41 g, has a Sony IMX219 8 MP camera with dual stabilisation, and takes a photo when your friend touches the temple, so they can capture the view without digging out a phone. The open-ear speakers play music or a podcast while they still hear the trail around them, rated at 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls. It comes with sun, photochromic or clear lenses. The M08 at $99 is the lighter-budget version, with an 8 MP camera and no published water rating. More hiking ideas are in gifts for hikers.

3. The commuter friend

A commuter friend spends a lot of time getting somewhere, and the most useful gifts make that hour better. Small ideas: an insulated travel mug filled with their coffee, a paperback for the train, a good umbrella, a monthly audiobook credit.

The bigger idea: the OXIVUE M08, $99 at checkout. It looks like an ordinary pair of glasses, weighs about 42 g and plays audio through open-ear directional speakers, so a friend who walks or bikes part of the way hears music, calls and traffic at the same time. It is rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls on Bluetooth 5.4, with sun, photochromic or clear lenses. One honest limit: open-ear audio leaks some sound at high volume and will not block out a loud train the way sealed earbuds do, so it suits a walking commute better than a packed subway. See gifts for commuters for more.

4. The cyclist friend

A cyclist friend usually has strong opinions about gear, so small gifts that get used up are safest: bar tape in a colour you know they like, energy snacks, a café stop on a ride you plan together, a print of a climb they love.

The bigger idea: the OXIVUE M14, $149 at checkout. It is a one-piece wrap shield in four colourways (Nero, Azzurro, Ghiaccio and Tramonto), rated IPX4 for splash and rain, with a Sony IMX219 8 MP camera and open-ear speakers. It weighs 52 g, heavier than our 41–42 g frames, and its battery is rated the other way round: 4 hours of listening and 7 hours of calls. The shield cannot be swapped for a clear or photochromic lens. Rules on headphones while cycling vary by place, so your friend should check local rules and keep the volume low enough to hear traffic. There are more ideas in gifts for cyclists.

5. The music-lover friend

A music-lover friend already owns headphones, so the question is where else they listen. Small ideas: a record from an artist you both like, concert tickets, a handwritten playlist with a note on why each song made the list, a cleaning kit for their turntable.

The bigger idea, for a friend who listens while walking, running errands or cooking: open-ear audio glasses. Either the M08 ($99) or the M02C ($109) plays music through speakers aimed at the ear, with nothing in the ear canal. Be honest about the trade-off when you give it: bass is lighter than sealed earbuds and there is no isolation, so it is for background listening on the move rather than critical listening at home. Our gifts for music lovers guide sorts ideas by where people listen.

6. Thanksgiving gifts for friends at a glance

Every row has a small thank-you that works on its own; the bigger gift is optional and only makes sense if your friend already wears sunglasses and uses a smartphone.

7. When camera glasses are the wrong gift

Glasses are personal, and no OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses. If your friend needs vision correction all day, these cannot replace their glasses, and a gift they cannot wear is worse than a card. Skip them too if your friend:

  • Wants a screen. There is no display; nothing appears in view. Your friend hears audio and captures photos and video.
  • Does not use a smartphone. Music, calls, the assistant and translation need a phone nearby and connected, and translation, the assistant and photo transfer go through the HeyCyan phone app. Translation covers 40+ languages on the M08 and M02C and 139 on the M14; only the wearer hears the translated audio, and the other person reads the reply on the phone.
  • Is uneasy about cameras.A photo or clip starts only with a visible touch on the temple. At a Thanksgiving table that still means asking relatives and guests before taking pictures, especially of other people’s children.
  • Might not like the look. A gift that does not suit them cannot be sent back for a refund, so be sure of their taste first; the policy is summarised below.

If you are unsure, our smart glasses gift guide walks through the questions to ask first, and tech gifts under $100 has other ideas at a similar price.

8. Timing and delivery

US delivery takes 5–9 business days; to have them by Thanksgiving, order by about November 13. We do not promise arrival by a date. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and a gift that arrives a few days late can still go with a card that says it is on the way; the note is the part that matters on the day.

For a friend abroad, international orders take 9–14 business days after shipment to the 39 countries we ship to, including Canada, the UK, the EU, Australia and Japan. Prices exclude import VAT and duties outside the US, which the recipient pays on delivery, so tell your friend before it arrives. Shipping is free from $99, so every single pair qualifies; details are on the shipping policy page.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Read the return policy and warranty before you buy a gift.

Frequently asked questions

Do you give friends gifts at Thanksgiving?

Not always, and that is the point of a friend gift at Thanksgiving: it is unexpected. A small thank-you works well, such as a jar of something homemade, a card or a treat you know they like. A bigger gift makes sense for a close friend you want to thank for a hard year, or as an early holiday present you can hand over in person while you are together.

What is a simple token of appreciation for a friend?

A handwritten note is the simplest one, and it carries the most weight when it says something specific: the drive they gave you, the week they checked in. Pair it with something small and consumable, like baked goods, good coffee, a favourite snack or a candle, and it reads as a thank-you rather than an obligation.

What is the 5 gift rule for adults?

It is a shopping rule often shared for the holidays: give one thing they want, one they need, one to wear, one to read and one experience. For a single Thanksgiving gift to a friend you can borrow just one line of it. An experience (a hike you plan together, a concert, a cooking night) is often a good fit for a friend.

What are some classy thank-you gifts for friends?

Keep it consumable, well made and personal. A good bottle of what they drink, a box of quality chocolate, a framed photo of the two of you, or a nice notebook with a written note inside all read as considered. For a friend with a clear hobby, one useful item for that hobby says you were paying attention, which matters more than the price.

What is a unique Thanksgiving gift for a friend who has everything?

Give them a new way to do something they already do. For a friend who walks, hikes or cycles with earbuds in, open-ear audio glasses with a camera are uncommon: music and calls without blocking the street, and eye-level photos started with a touch on the temple. The OXIVUE M08 is $99 at checkout, the IP65 M02C $109 and the M14 cycling shield $149. They do not take prescription lenses.

Will it arrive before Thanksgiving?

Possibly, but we do not promise a date. US delivery takes 5–9 business days; to have them by Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26, 2026), order by about November 13. International orders take 9–14 business days after shipment, and outside the US the recipient pays any import VAT or duties on delivery. Shipping is free from $99, so every single pair qualifies.

What if the glasses don't suit my friend?

Check before you buy, because a gift that misses is not refundable. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. If your friend needs prescription lenses all day or wants a display, choose a different gift.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
  • M14: one-piece shield, so the lens can't be swapped for clear or photochromic.
  • M14: IPX4 covers splash, spray and rain only, and at 52 g it is heavier than the 41–42 g frames.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
