Four questions a gym actually asks

A gym is not a hostile environment for electronics in the way a mountain or a boat is. It is warm, dry and indoors. What it has instead is salt, repeated impact, other people standing very close to you, and — uniquely among the places people wear these — a written policy about cameras. In rough order of how often they cause a return:

1. Sweat, and what a splash rating does and does not promise.
2. Hearing the room — a spotter, a request to work in, a bar being racked behind you.
3. Camera etiquette and gym policy, which is the section most pages leave out.
4. Whether they stay on under load, honestly assessed by movement type.

1. Sweat: what IPX4 covers, and what it absolutely does not

The M14 at $199 is rated IPX4. In the IP standard, the 4 in that position means protection against water splashing from any direction. In practical terms that covers what a gym throws at you: sweat running down from your forehead, a wipe-down with a damp towel, a rained-on walk to the car.

Here is the part that matters more, stated as plainly as we can:

• IPX4 is not waterproof. It says nothing about immersion at any depth.
• Never submerge them. No pool, no shower, no dunking them under a tap to rinse the salt off.
• Skip the sauna and the steam room. Sustained heat plus saturated humidity is a harder test than a splash rating describes, and it is not a use we would defend.
• Water damage beyond IPX4 is excluded from the 2-year warranty. It is handled through the paid repair program instead, so a dunk is a bill rather than a claim.

Two other things worth knowing about the rest of the range. The M02C at $159 is the only frame we make with an IP65 rating — dust-tight and rated against water jets, which is a genuinely higher bar than IPX4, though still not immersion. And the M08, M08C carry no water rating at all. If you sweat heavily, that is a real reason to choose the M14 or the M02C over the other three, and we would rather tell you than let you find out.

The habit that actually preserves them: wipe the frame and the charging contacts dry after a heavy session and let them dry fully before charging. Salt residue on an exposed contact is a slow corrosion path that no IP rating protects against.

2. Open ears — the reason this format belongs in a weight room

Every OXIVUE frame uses open-ear directional audio: the drivers sit above and outside the ear and beam sound downward, leaving the canal completely unobstructed. There is no sealed or in-canal option anywhere in the lineup.

In a gym that is not a compromise, it is the correct design. Under a loaded bar you want to hear your spotter’s count. On a rack you want to hear the person asking whether they can work in, instead of making them wave at you. In a class you want the instructor without pulling a bud out every ninety seconds. And there is a plain safety argument for hearing the plates and the person moving behind you.

The honest cost of the format, since every page that praises open-ear audio skips this:

• Less bass and less isolation than sealed earbuds. Physics, not engineering effort — you cannot pressurise a canal you have deliberately left open.
• It leaks. At high volume in a quiet corner of the gym, the person on the next bench can hear your podcast. Be considerate about it.
• Loud gym music competes. In a room already at high volume, you will turn it up, and open-ear audio has a lower ceiling before it stops sounding good.

Music, podcasts and calls all come from your phone over Bluetooth 5.4 — these are a headset, not a player. There is no onboard music library and no standalone streaming, and the AI and translation features likewise need the companion app and a connected phone.

3. Camera etiquette — the section that should decide your purchase

This is the part we care most about getting right, because it is the one that will actually affect you and it is the one every other page skips.

A great many gyms restrict filming, and some ban it outright.Policies vary by chain, by franchise and sometimes by branch, and they exist because members have a reasonable objection to appearing in a stranger’s video while they train. Before you wear a camera frame into a gym:

1. Read the posted policy and ask the front desk. A thirty-second question answered at the desk is better than a confrontation at the squat rack. If the policy says no recording devices, that includes glasses with a camera in them — the frame does not create an exception.
2. Changing rooms, locker rooms and showers are absolutely off-limits. This is not etiquette. Recording in a place where privacy is expected is criminal in most states, and several have specific voyeurism statutes with serious penalties. Take them off before you walk in, every time. 3. Never film other members. If someone is in your frame, they should have agreed to it. Filming your own set with other people in the background is where most gym arguments start.
4. Answer the question honestly when asked. Camera glasses look like glasses, which is exactly why people get suspicious of them. On our frames, capture is a deliberate touch rather than an always-on recording mode — say so, and show them.

When filming is permitted, the case for eye-level capture is real: a form check from your own point of view shows the bar path you actually see, and it does not require setting a phone against a dumbbell rack and hoping the angle survives the set. That is a narrower benefit than the category usually advertises, and it is worth exactly as much as your gym allows.

4. Do they stay on during reps?

Honestly: it depends on the movement, and no eyewear on the market is engineered for a loaded brace. Sorted by how well it works in practice:

Shape matters here. The M14 at 52 g is a one-piece wrap shield with curved temples — the closest thing in our range to a sports fit, which is why it is the model we would put in a gym.
