Ray-Ban Stories vs Ray-Ban Meta: what changed since 2021.

Ray-Ban Stories vs every Ray-Ban Meta, from Meta’s own pages

Ray-Ban Stories was the first product of Meta’s partnership with EssilorLuxottica. It went on sale on September 9, 2021 from $299, in 20 style combinations, in the US, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy and the UK, and reached Spain, Austria, Belgium and France in 2022 from €329 per Meta’s update to the same post. Two years later, on September 27, 2023, Meta announced its successor under a new name: Ray-Ban Meta. Same partnership, same $299 starting price, different hardware and a different software story.

The table puts Stories beside all three Ray-Ban Meta generations. Where Meta did not publish a figure for a model, the cell says so rather than borrowing one from a review or another generation.

What changed from Stories to Ray-Ban Meta, one by one

1. The camera: two 5 MP cameras became one 12 MP ultra-wide

Meta launched Stories with “dual integrated 5MP cameras” and Ray-Ban Meta with “a new ultra-wide 12 MP camera.” Meta did not restate a megapixel figure for Gen 2, and Gen 3 lists 12 MP, the same figure Ray-Ban Meta launched with, so the 5 MP to 12 MP step is the only stills upgrade Meta has quantified across the line.

2. Video length and resolution

Stories launched recording videos of up to 30 seconds. In March 2022, Meta announced an update that let owners toggle the maximum between 30 and 60 seconds. Ray-Ban Meta launched with 1080p clips of up to 60 seconds, and Gen 2 moved to 3K Ultra HD. Meta’s Stories post does not give a video resolution, so we do not state one.

3. Microphones and calls

Stories used a three-microphone array with beamforming and background noise suppression. Meta went from three microphones on Stories to five on Gen 1 and six on Gen 3; it did not publish a count for Gen 2.

4. The assistant: Facebook Assistant, then Meta AI

Stories shipped with Facebook Assistant voice commands for hands-free capture, and Meta later added calls, messages and media control by voice. Ray-Ban Meta runs Meta AI, the voice assistant Meta now builds its glasses around. Meta’s help centre is direct about the gap: “Meta AI not available on Ray-Ban Stories.” That sentence is the main reason a Stories owner would upgrade, more than any spec in the table.

5. The app

Stories paired with the Facebook View app, which imported and edited captures and shared them to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other apps. Today Stories pair with the Meta AI mobile app, which replaced Meta View. Meta says Stories will continue to be supported there, and that the iPad app will keep supporting both Stories and Ray-Ban Meta.

6. What did not change

The product class and the frames. Both are camera-and-audio glasses with no display in the lens, built on Ray-Ban silhouettes: Stories came in Wayfarer, Wayfarer Large, Round and Meteor, with clear, sun, Transitions and prescription lenses. Meta launched Stories with a hard-wired capture LED that lights up to let people nearby know when you are recording, and both launched at the same $299.

What a Ray-Ban Stories pair still does in 2026

If you already own Stories and they work, the useful question is what you still have. By Meta’s own launch and help pages, that is:

• Photo and video capture with the capture button or voice commands, at the 5 MP camera spec and 30 or 60-second video length described above.
• Open-ear audio for music and calls through the built-in speakers and the three-microphone array.
• App support through the Meta AI mobile app, which Meta says will continue for Stories.

What you do not have is Meta AI, the higher-resolution camera, or any of the battery gains that later generations advertised. If none of those matter to you, a working pair of Stories does not need replacing. If one of them does, skip to the upgrade paths below.

Is a used pair of Ray-Ban Stories worth buying?

Resale listings, such as eBay’s, are where Stories turn up now. Before paying for one, weigh four things:

1. Battery age.Stories went on sale in 2021, so any pair is several years old. Meta’s launch post gives no battery rating to compare against, and a used listing rarely gives one either, so you are buying a battery of unknown health that is built into the frame.
2. No Meta AI. If a seller describes a pair as Ray-Ban Meta with Meta AI and it turns out to be Stories, it will not do what the listing says. Ask for the exact model name before paying. A pair bought new before September 27, 2023 cannot be Ray-Ban Meta.
3. Pairing hand-over. Meta publishes a help article on unpairing Ray-Ban Stories from the Meta AI mobile app, and it notes that unpairing does not erase settings; to pair the glasses with a new Meta account they need a factory reset. Ask the seller to unpair and factory reset the pair before it ships.
4. The refurbished alternative. Meta sells refurbished Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 from $197, each inspected by Meta and backed by a one-year limited warranty, as recorded in our refurbished Meta glasses guide on September 25, 2026. That is a 12 MP camera, five microphones and Meta AI, with a warranty. A used Stories has to be priced well below that to make sense.

We have not recorded a typical resale price for Stories, because we could not find one from a source we could cite. Compare the listing in front of you against the $197 refurbished Gen 1 and the new frames below, not against the 2021 launch price.

Upgrade paths from Ray-Ban Stories, at three prices

Around $150 to $200: a new frame outside Meta’s platform

Declared interest: we make these, so read this as a seller’s section. The OXIVUE M08 is $149 with an 8 MP camera, open-ear audio and two-way translation across 40+ languages; its listed playback is 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls. The M02C is $159 at about 41 g with an IP65 rating and the Hey Cyan voice assistant. The M14is $199, a 52 g wrap shield that records stabilised 1080p at 30 fps and translates 139 languages. All three use the free HeyCyan companion app: no Meta account, no subscription. For a Stories owner the gains are a camera with more megapixels, translation and a battery that has not aged three or four years. What you give up is the Ray-Ban name and Meta’s platform features.

Around $200: refurbished Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1

If you want to stay with Meta and the Ray-Ban frame, this is the cheapest route to Meta AI. It fixes the three biggest Stories gaps at once: camera, microphones and assistant. It does not give you Gen 2’s battery, and Gen 1’s rated battery is up to 4 hours.

Bottom line

Ray-Ban Stories and Ray-Ban Meta launched at the same $299, but Ray-Ban Meta replaced Stories’ dual 5 MP cameras with a 12 MP ultra-wide, went from three microphones to five, and added Meta AI, which Meta says is not available on Stories. A working Stories pair is still supported and still captures and plays audio; keep it if that is all you use. If you are offered a used pair, compare it with Meta’s refurbished Gen 1 from $197 before paying.
