Places to travel for Thanksgiving, sorted by the trip you want
A Thanksgiving getaway is usually a long weekend, so the right place is the one that fits three or four days and your kind of trip: a canyon, a mountain cabin, a history town, a city parade or somewhere warm. Here are US places to travel for Thanksgiving by trip type, what the official sites say about them, and the stop on each where a hands-free photo is worth taking.

1. How to choose where to travel for Thanksgiving
Start with the number of days, not the destination. Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday, so a trip from Wednesday or Thursday to Sunday gives you three or four days. Every hour spent getting there comes out of that, so a place within a day’s drive often beats a better-known place that needs two flights. Then decide what the trip is for: scenery, history, a city, or warmth.
The table sorts the places in this guide by trip type. The “official note” column quotes each place’s own site, checked October 20, 2026. We do not give crowd, price or weather figures; those change every year, so check them close to your dates.
| Place | Trip type | Official note (checked Oct 20, 2026) | Hands-free photo stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Canyon South Rim, AZ | Fly-to scenery | South Rim open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; some facilities close in winter | Rim walk near Grand Canyon Village |
| Zion, UT | Drive-to desert | Open 24/7 year-round; scenic drive is shuttle-only while the shuttle runs | Walking from the shuttle stops |
| Joshua Tree, CA | Drive-to desert | Open 24/7, 365 days; very limited cell reception; bring your own food and water | Short trails among the Joshua trees |
| Great Smoky Mountains, TN/NC | Mountain weekend | Open 24 hours, 365 days; some secondary roads close seasonally | Overlooks and short forest walks |
| Plymouth, MA | History trip | Plimoth Patuxet lists a Thanksgiving Day buffet with two-day museum admission | The waterfront walk, outside the museum |
| New York City | City break | Home of the annual Thanksgiving Day parade | Street views when you are not in a packed crowd |
| Everglades, FL | Somewhere warm | Homestead Main Entrance open 24 hours; Shark Valley 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM | Boardwalk trails |
2. Fly-to scenery: Grand Canyon South Rim, Arizona
The National Park Service says the South Rim is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and that it includes Grand Canyon Village and Desert View (checked October 20, 2026). The same page notes that some facilities close during winter months and that reservations are strongly recommended during spring, summer and fall, so sort out where you will stay first.
The South Rim suits a Thanksgiving trip because the main experience is simple: walk the rim, stop, look. That is also where camera glasses make sense. On a rim walk you want both hands free and your attention on the edge, not on your phone screen, and a touch on the temple captures the view at eye level. Keep the phone for the shots you want to frame carefully. Our smart glasses for hiking guide has more on using them on trails.
3. Drive-to desert: Zion, Utah and Joshua Tree, California
Both parks say they are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year (checked October 20, 2026). They are good Thanksgiving weekend getaways from Southern California and Las Vegas because the drive fits inside a day and the days are built around walking.
- Zion. The park notes that when the Zion Canyon Shuttle System is operating, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is only accessible by shuttle. Check whether it is running on your dates. Walking from the shuttle stops is where hands-free photos are most useful: you are moving between viewpoints with a pack and a water bottle.
- Joshua Tree. The park’s basic-information page says cell phone reception is very limited and that you should bring all your own food, water and supplies. That matters for smart glasses too: photos are captured on the frame, but the app features that need your phone and a connection, like the assistant, will not work where there is no signal. Plan to move files to your phone once you are back in range.
Desert days are bright, which is where a full-tint sun lens earns its place. A driving Thanksgiving trip also brings in long hours at the wheel; see smart glasses for road trips for using the audio on the road.
4. Mountain weekend: Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee and North Carolina
The National Park Service says Great Smoky Mountains National Park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and that while the park itself never closes, some secondary roads and campgrounds close for the season (checked October 20, 2026). It is within a day’s drive of a large part of the Southeast and Midwest, which makes it a natural long-weekend choice.
Mountain weather can turn wet. If you expect rain on the trail, the M02C is the pair to consider: it is rated IP65 against dust and water jets, though not for immersion. The M08 has no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain. Overlooks and short forest walks are the natural hands-free photo stops, and the open-ear speakers let you take a call or play a podcast on the walk while still hearing what is around you.
5. History trip: Plymouth, Massachusetts
Plymouth is the obvious Thanksgiving pilgrimage. Plimoth Patuxet Museums, at 137 Warren Avenue, lists a Thanksgiving Day Homestyle Buffet with seatings on Thursday, November 26, and says the ticket includes two-day museum admission (checked October 20, 2026). Book through the museum’s own site; we do not quote its prices here because they change.
A history trip is mostly about listening and looking, so be thoughtful with any camera. Follow the museum’s own rules on photography, and ask before photographing staff or other guests. The town’s waterfront, outside, is the easier place for hands-free photos.
6. City break: New York City
New York City is home to the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. We could not load Macy’s own parade page when we checked on October 20, 2026, so we do not quote the route, start time or viewing rules here; read them on Macy’s site before you plan where to stand.
In a city, camera glasses are most useful when you are walking between neighborhoods with coffee in one hand and a map on the other. In a packed crowd, be considerate: the people around you did not agree to be in your photos, so ask first or simply skip the shot.
7. Somewhere warm: the Everglades, Florida
For a Thanksgiving getaway with sun, the Everglades are a drive from Miami. The park says its Homestead Main Entrance, which leads to the Royal Palm and Flamingo areas, is open 24 hours a day, and that the Shark Valley entrance is open daily from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM (checked October 20, 2026). The entrances do not connect, so pick one per day.
Boardwalk trails are the stop where hands-free photos work best. Keep any pair away from the water: the M02C’s IP65 rating covers spray, not a drop into a canal, and the M08 has no published water rating.
8. What camera glasses do, and don’t do, on a trip
OXIVUE camera glasses take 8 MP photos and short clips that you start with a touch on the temple, and play audio through open-ear speakers. That is the whole job on a holiday trip: capture what you are looking at without reaching for the phone, and listen to music, directions or calls while hearing the world around you.
- No display. Nothing appears in your view. Photos and clips go to the HeyCyan phone app.
- Not a replacement for your phone camera. There is no screen to frame a shot on; for the one carefully composed photo, use the phone.
- Open-ear audio leaks a little at high volume and will not block out a windy overlook the way sealed earbuds do.
- No prescription lenses on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these cannot replace your glasses.
- Water. M02C IP65 (dust and water jets, not immersion); M08 no published rating.
The M08 weighs about 42 g and the M02C about 41 g; both are rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls. The M02C adds a Sony IMX219 sensor with dual stabilisation, magnetic charging and “Hey Cyan” visual AI that can describe what you look at. Both come with sun, photochromic or clear lenses. 9. Timing, driving and consent
US delivery takes 5–9 business days; to have them by Thanksgiving, order by about November 13. We cannot promise arrival by a specific date, so leave a margin if the trip starts on Wednesday.
On the drive, use only the audio. Do not take photos or operate the phone app while the car is moving, and check local law on headphones and hands-free devices; our can you drive with smart glasses guide covers it. Tinted lenses are for daytime and are not for night driving.
At the destination, ask before photographing or filming other people, especially other people’s children, and respect any museum or tour rules. Every capture starts with a visible touch on the temple. For the legal side, see smart glasses recording laws by state. This is general information, not legal advice.
Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days after shipment. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Compare every model on the comparison page.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best places to visit in the USA during Thanksgiving?
It depends on the trip you want. For big scenery, the South Rim of Grand Canyon, Zion, Joshua Tree and the Great Smoky Mountains all list themselves as open around the clock year-round on the National Park Service site (checked October 20, 2026). For history, Plymouth, Massachusetts hosts a Thanksgiving Day buffet at Plimoth Patuxet. For a city, New York City has its annual Thanksgiving Day parade. Southern Florida and the Everglades suit a warmer drive.
Are national parks open on Thanksgiving Day?
Many are. On their official hours pages, Grand Canyon's South Rim, Zion, Joshua Tree and Great Smoky Mountains each say the park is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year (checked October 20, 2026). Open does not mean every road, visitor center or service is running: the Smokies note that some secondary roads close seasonally, and Grand Canyon says some facilities close in winter. Check each park's alerts page before you set off.
Where is a good place to go for a 3-day Thanksgiving weekend?
Pick something within a day's drive so the holiday is not spent in transit. Zion and Joshua Tree work from Southern California and Las Vegas, the Smokies from much of the Southeast and Midwest, Plymouth from Boston and the Northeast, and the Everglades from Miami. A three-day trip leaves room for one long outing, one easy day and the meal itself.
What are the most popular places to travel for Thanksgiving?
We do not publish booking statistics, so we will not invent a top 10. The destinations that come up again and again in the travel guides ranking for this search are big cities like New York, national parks, mountain towns and warm-weather beaches. This guide groups the US options by trip type so you can match a place to the kind of long weekend you actually want.
Can I take photos with camera glasses in a national park?
Yes, for ordinary sightseeing photos of the scenery. On OXIVUE frames a touch on the temple starts each photo or clip, so you choose every capture. Ask before photographing other visitors, especially other people's children, and follow any posted rules at museums, tours or ranger programs.
Should I wear camera glasses while driving to a Thanksgiving destination?
No for the camera; use only the audio. Do not take photos or operate the phone app while the car is moving. Rules on headphones and hands-free devices differ by state, so check local law; our guide to driving with smart glasses goes through them. Tinted lenses are for daytime only and are not for night driving.
When should I order to have glasses before Thanksgiving?
About November 13. US delivery takes 5 to 9 business days; to have them by Thanksgiving, order by about November 13. We cannot promise arrival by a specific date. Shipping is free from $99, so a single pair of either style here qualifies. International orders take 9 to 14 business days after shipment.
What these frames won’t do
- No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
- No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
- Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
- Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
- M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
- M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
