Gifts for truckers: the one thing he probably does not own yet

Search for gifts for truckers and you get mugs, decals and 75-item lists. Most of the useful things on those lists are already in the cab. This guide is about one gift most drivers have not bought themselves, audio sunglasses that take calls with the ears open, and it is honest about who it is wrong for, with five alternatives if that is the case.

1. What is already in the cab

The pages that rank for this search agree on the practical list: a seat cushion, a GPS that knows bridge heights, a 12 V fridge or a good cooler, a shower kit, work gloves, hi-vis clothing, an insulated mug. Driver threads and carrier blogs in the same results repeat many of the same items. The problem for a gift buyer is that a driver who has been on the road for more than a season already owns most of them, and has opinions about the brand.

The rest of the results are merch: engraved tumblers, truck-shaped decals, funny T-shirts. Those are fine if you know the person collects them. They are not a gift that changes a shift. This guide takes a different route. It picks one thing most drivers have not bought for themselves, says plainly who it is wrong for, and then lists five alternatives that drivers themselves ask for, without pretending there are 75.

2. The gift most truckers do not own: audio sunglasses

Every long-haul driver has the same unsolved problem: the phone. Federal rules for commercial drivers say, in the words of 49 CFR 392.82, that “no driver shall use a hand-held mobile telephone while driving a CMV” (checked October 7, 2026). So calls from dispatch, family and brokers have to be answered some other way. Earbuds seal the ear and block the engine note and the CB. A dash-mounted speakerphone fights the road noise. A headset lives on one ear for eleven hours.

Open-ear audio sunglasses solve it differently. The OXIVUE M08 puts directional speakers in the temples of a 42 g Italian TR90 frame, so a call or a podcast plays close to the ear while nothing sits in the ear canal. The road, the CB and the person at the fuel desk are all still audible. It pairs to his phone over Bluetooth 5.4, runs about 7 hours of listening or 4 hours of calls on a charge, and recharges during a break. The M02C is the same idea with an IP65 rating for rain and a Sony IMX219 camera with dual stabilisation.

Both are sunglasses first. The lens comes as a full sun tint, a photochromic lens that darkens in UV light, or a clear lens, and the same frame suits all three, which matters for a driver who runs days and nights (more on that below). Both also carry an 8 MP camera that captures a photo or a short clip only when he touches the temple. It never records on its own. That is useful for a dated photo of a trailer seal, a damaged pallet or a scale ticket, with the hands still on the straps.

Why most drivers have not bought one: the category is still new, and a driver shopping for himself tends to spend on the truck before he spends on himself. A gift is exactly how this kind of thing gets into a cab.

3. M08 vs M02C as a trucker gift

Two of our frames fit the job. The M08 is the lower price and the lighter of the two decisions; the M02C costs $10 more and adds weather protection and a better-documented camera. The table shows the differences that matter for a gift buyer.

Prices checked 2026-10-07; checkout price may change. Free shipping starts at $99, so either single pair ships free in the US. If you are buying for two drivers, two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear, which makes two M08 $149.

Our pick for most gift buyers is the M08: it is the price most people have in mind for a trucker gift and it does the job the gift is for, which is calls and audio with the ears free. Choose the M02Cif the driver fuels and chains up in weather, or if the camera matters to him, because its Sony sensor and stabilisation are documented and the M08’s sensor maker is not. Both appear in our guide to smart glasses for truck drivers, which goes deeper on cab use.

4. Which lens for someone who drives day and night

This is the decision most gift buyers get wrong, and it is the one that decides whether the gift gets worn. Ask yourself, or ask him, when he does most of his driving.

  • Mostly daylight. The sun lens. It is the obvious trucker sunglass and the one that reads most like a gift when the box opens.
  • Days and nights, or unpredictable dispatch. The photochromic lens. It darkens in UV light and lightens again when the UV goes. Be aware that a windscreen blocks most UV, so behind the glass it stays mostly light and does the real darkening on foot at the fuel island or the dock. Our photochromic smart glasses guide explains the behaviour in more detail.
  • Mostly nights. The clear lens. A tinted lens should never be worn to drive after dark. A clear-lens M08 is still the same open-ear audio frame, just without the sun tint, and that is the right gift for a night driver.

We do not publish a polarisation or UV figure for any of these lenses, so the page does not claim one. If polarised glare control is the thing he asks for, that is a different purchase, and it belongs on the alternatives list rather than in a spec we cannot back.

5. Check these before you buy for someone else

Buying glasses for another person is harder than buying a mug, and the terms do not let you undo a wrong guess. Run through these before checkout.

  • Does he need prescription lenses? None of our frames take them. If he drives in prescription glasses, these cannot replace them and he would have to switch to contact lenses to wear them. That is the single most common reason this gift is wrong.
  • Fit. The M08 and M02C are a lightweight TR90 frame at about 42 g and 41 g, and we do not publish frame dimensions for them. If he has a very wide face or a very narrow one, look at the photos on the product page against his current sunglasses, or ask him; see our support page if you want to ask us first.
  • A phone is required. The glasses pair to a phone over Bluetooth and the HeyCyan app handles photos, video, the assistant and translation in 40+ languages. Calls and audio need the phone nearby and connected. There is no screen in the lens and no subscription.
  • Recording and consent. The camera starts only with a visible touch on the temple. Recording a conversation can require the other person’s consent depending on the state, and a carrier may have its own camera policy. Our recording laws by state guide covers it; this is general information, not legal advice.
  • Hands-free is not a loophole. The frames let him answer a call without the phone in his hand. The federal rule above, his carrier’s policy and state headphone laws still apply to how he uses them. Our driving with smart glasses guide goes through the state rules.
  • No refund for a wrong guess. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. If you are not sure about fit or lens, send him the product page and let him pick, then order.

6. Five honest alternatives if glasses are wrong for him

If he wears prescription glasses, hates anything on his face, or already has audio sorted, do not force it. These are the five gifts that the drivers in the ranking threads and carrier blogs actually ask for. We do not sell any of them, and we are not quoting a brand or a price, because the right one depends on his truck and his routes.

  • A proper seat cushion or lumbar support. A practical gift that turns up on carrier gift lists. Ask about his seat before you buy; air-ride seats and standard seats take different shapes.
  • A truck-specific GPS unit. A consumer phone map does not know bridge heights, weight limits or hazmat routes. Drivers who have been sent under a low bridge once do not forget it.
  • A 12 V fridge for the cab.Eating from the truck stop every day is the hidden cost of the job. A fridge that runs off the truck’s power pays for itself in a few weeks of groceries.
  • A shower and laundry kit. Travel-size everything, a quick-dry towel, a bag that hangs. Unglamorous, used daily, and the thing he runs out of on the road.
  • Polarised driving sunglasses. If glare off wet asphalt is his complaint and he does not want audio, a conventional polarised pair is the better answer than ours, since we publish no polarisation rating.

For a broader list of wearable tech gifts by hobby, our tech gifts for dad guide covers the drivers, anglers and hikers in the family, and gifts for men under $100 stays under that line.

7. Ordering in time for a gift date

US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days. International orders take 9 to 14 business days after shipment, and we ship to 39 countries: the contiguous United States, Canada, the UK, all 27 EU states, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Colombia and Mexico. We do not ship to Alaska, Hawaii, US territories or APO addresses. Outside the US, the recipient pays any import VAT or duties on delivery. For Christmas, count business days backwards from the date you need and add a week of margin; a driver on a long run may not be home to receive it anyway, so shipping to the home address a few days early is usually the safer plan. Full details are on the shipping policy.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Compare every model on the comparison page.

Frequently asked questions

What does every trucker need?

Driver threads and carrier blogs that rank for this search repeat a similar list: a good seat cushion, a reliable GPS built for trucks, a cooler or 12 V fridge, a shower kit, and a way to take calls without holding the phone. The first four are usually already in the cab by the second year. Hands-free audio that does not sit in the ear is the one most drivers have not sorted out, which is why a pair of open-ear audio sunglasses makes a better gift than another mug.

What are some good truck gifts for a guy?

Pick something he will use on the next run rather than put on a shelf. Open-ear audio sunglasses cover calls, podcasts and navigation prompts with the ears uncovered: the OXIVUE M08 is $99 at checkout and the IP65 M02C is $109. If glasses are wrong for him, a seat cushion, a 12 V fridge, a truck-specific GPS, a shower kit or a quality thermos are the gifts drivers themselves recommend. Avoid gag merch unless you know he collects it.

What is a good gift for a driver?

Anything that reduces a daily irritation. For a professional driver that is usually the phone: a federal rule bars using a hand-held mobile phone while driving a commercial vehicle, so a way to answer calls without picking it up is used every single day. Audio sunglasses do that through the frame and leave the ears open for the engine and the CB. Check that he does not need prescription lenses before you buy, because none of our frames take them.

Can he wear tinted sunglasses when he drives at night?

He should not. A full sun tint is for daylight. If the driver you are buying for runs nights, choose the clear lens, or the photochromic lens, which darkens in UV light and stays mostly light behind a windscreen because the glass blocks most UV. The M08 and M02C both come in sun, photochromic and clear versions of the same frame, so the gift still works for a night driver; you simply pick a different lens at checkout.

Are OXIVUE sunglasses polarized?

We do not publish a polarisation or UV rating for the M08 or M02C lenses, so we do not claim one. If the driver specifically wants a polarized lens for glare off wet roads, say so in your decision rather than assuming it. What the frames do give him is open-ear audio, a camera he starts with a touch on the temple, and a choice of sun, photochromic or clear lens.

Will it arrive in time for Christmas?

US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days, and international orders in 9 to 14 business days after shipment, with free shipping from $99, so every single pair here qualifies. Counting business days only, order at least two working weeks before the day you need it, and earlier if the gift is going outside the US, where the recipient also pays any import VAT or duties on delivery.

What if he does not like them?

There is no change-of-mind refund, so check fit, lens choice and the prescription question before you order rather than after. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. A fault that appears after delivery is covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. If you are unsure, ask the driver which lens he would wear, or send him the product page and let him choose.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
