Gifts for fishermen whose hands are always full
Most gift lists for anglers are tackle. That is hard to get right for someone who has fished for years and already owns the rod, the reel and the lures they trust. This guide starts from a moment that is often awkward on the water, the photo of the fish, explains where camera sunglasses help, and says plainly what they cannot do near water.

1. What an angler actually wants
When we checked the US results for this search on October 9, 2026, the top pages were retailer gift categories, an r/Fishing thread asking what the perfect gift for a fisherman is, and holiday gift guides from fishing magazines. They are good for browsing tackle. The problem for a giver is that tackle is the most personal part of fishing. Rod action, reel size, line weight and lure choice are tuned to a species, a water and a habit. Someone who has fished for years has made those choices already, and a well-meant reel can easily be the wrong one.
A better question is what goes wrong on a good day. For a lot of anglers it is the moment after the fish is landed: a wet, slippery fish in one hand, the net or the pliers in the other, and a phone somewhere in a pocket. Getting the phone out, unlocking it with wet fingers and framing a photo before the release is clumsy, and it puts the phone at risk over the water. A gift that helps with that moment adds to the kit without asking the angler to give up anything they trust.
2. The catch photo, hands-free
Camera sunglasses put the camera in the frame corner, at eye level. On OXIVUE frames a photo or a short clip starts with a deliberate touch on the temple, and nothing records unless the wearer starts it. So the angler can hold the fish with both hands, look at it, tap once, and let it go. The picture shows what they were looking at, from where they were standing, and the phone stays dry in the pocket.
The other half is audio. Open-ear speakers in the temples point sound toward the ear without sealing it, so a podcast or a call plays while the angler still hears the water, the boat engine and the person fishing next to them. Microphones in the frame let them take a call with the phone stowed. Be aware of the trade-offs: open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume, and on a windy lake they will not drown out the wind the way sealed earbuds do.
Photos and clips land on the phone through the free HeyCyan app. There is no display; nothing appears in view. If the angler wants to go deeper on fishing use, from battery to lens choice, our smart glasses for fishing guide is written for the wearer rather than the giver.
3. M02C ($109 at checkout): the pair for spray
The M02C is the pair we would give most anglers. It is listed at $159 and costs $109 at checkout as a single pair, which also clears the free-shipping threshold. Its reason to exist near water is the IP65 rating: dust-tight and protected against water jets, so spray off a bow, rain on the bank and a splash from a thrashing fish are covered. It is not a rating for immersion, and it is not for saltwater use.
- Camera. A Sony IMX219 8 MP sensor with dual stabilisation, which helps when the boat is moving or the angler is wading.
- Weight and charging. About 41 g, with magnetic charging, and rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls over Bluetooth 5.4.
- Lens. Sunglasses, Photochromic or Clear. The sun lens is a full tint; the photochromic lens darkens in UV light. None is sold as polarised.
- Visual AI.It is the only OXIVUE frame with “Hey Cyan” visual AI, which can describe what the wearer is looking at through the HeyCyan app, with the phone nearby and connected.
4. M08 ($99 at checkout): the lower-priced option
The M08 is listed at $149 and costs $99 at checkout. It has an 8 MP camera, the same open-ear speakers and microphones, and the same 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls. It weighs about 42 g in an Italian TR90 frame and comes with the same three lens choices.
The difference that matters for fishing is water. The M08 has no published water rating, so it suits bank fishing on dry days, a calm pond or a pier in fair weather. For an angler who fishes in rain, runs a boat or stands in spray, spend the extra $10 on the M02C.
5. The two pairs side by side
| M02C | M08 | |
|---|---|---|
| Price at checkout (one pair) | $109 (listed $159) | $99 (listed $149) |
| Who it suits | Boat days, spray, rain on the bank | Dry days on the bank or a pier |
| Water | IP65 (dust, water jets; not immersion, not saltwater) | No published rating |
| Camera | Sony IMX219 8 MP, dual stabilisation | 8 MP |
| Weight | ~41 g | ~42 g |
| Lenses | Sun / photochromic / clear · none polarised | Sun / photochromic / clear · none polarised |
| Extra | “Hey Cyan” visual AI · magnetic charging | — |
| Floats / submersible | No / no | No / no |
Prices checked 2026-10-09; checkout price may change. If two people in the family fish together, two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear, so two M08 come to $149.
6. What they cannot do near water
A fishing gift that ends up at the bottom of a lake is a bad gift, so these limits come before the purchase, not after.
- No submersion. IP65 on the M02C covers water jets, not immersion. The M08 has no published water rating. Neither is for wading in up to the face, a dunk to rinse off, or a swim.
- They do not float. No OXIVUE frame is sold as floating. If a pair goes over the side, it is gone. A retainer cord that fits the temples is a cheap, sensible add-on for boat and wading anglers.
- Not for saltwater. The M02C is not for saltwater use, and the M08 has no rating at all. Our guide to smart glasses for water sports covers where water ratings stop.
- Not polarised. We do not sell a polarised lens on any model. Sight fishers who rely on polarised glasses to read the water should keep them, and treat a camera pair as a separate tool for the catch and the audio.
- Battery. Listening is rated at 7 hours on both pairs, so a dawn-to-dusk trip with music running all day will need a top-up; plan to charge between sessions.
7. Honest non-glasses gifts for a fisherman
We sell glasses, so here we point elsewhere. Some anglers are better served by something else, and the categories below are common, practical alternatives. We do not name brands or quote prices; the point is to match the gift to the person.
| Gift | What it solves | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Fillet knife or sharpener | Used every time a fish is kept | Many anglers have a favourite already |
| Polarised fishing sunglasses | Cuts surface glare for reading the water | No camera or audio; fit and tint are personal |
| Dry bag or waterproof phone case | Keeps the phone and keys safe on a boat | Not exciting |
| Guided trip or charter day | An experience rather than another object | Tied to a place and a date |
| Gift card from their usual tackle shop | Lets them buy the exact lure or line they use | Less personal |
| Camera sunglasses (OXIVUE M02C / M08) | Hands-free catch photos, open-ear audio, phone stays dry | $109 or $99; not polarised; no submersion; do not float; no prescription lenses |

8. Before you buy for an angler
- Prescription glasses. No OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses. If the angler needs correction all day, pick a gift from the table above instead.
- The phone comes along. Photos, clips, the assistant and translation in 40+ languages run through the free HeyCyan app. The assistant and translation need the phone nearby and connected, so do not count on them on remote water without signal.
- Tournament, club and charter rules. Tournaments, fishing clubs, charter operators and private waters may restrict cameras or audio devices. Check the current rules of the event or venue before the angler relies on them there.
- Other people. Capture starts with a visible touch on the temple. Ask before filming people up close, and recording conversations may require consent where the law requires it; our recording laws by state guide has more. This is general information, not legal advice.
- Timing. For a birthday, Father’s Day or Christmas, allow 5–9 business days for US delivery and 9–14 business days after shipment for international orders. We ship to 39 countries; outside the US, the recipient pays any import VAT or duties on delivery.
Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. None of our frames take prescription lenses. See the shipping policy and return policy, or compare every model on the comparison page.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good gift for someone who enjoys fishing?
A good fishing gift is one that adds to a kit the angler already trusts instead of replacing it. Rods, reels and lures are personal, so many givers do better with consumables, an experience, or something new to the kit. Camera sunglasses are in that last group: the OXIVUE M02C ($109 at checkout, IP65) and M08 ($99) take an eye-level photo or clip with a touch on the temple while both hands hold the fish.
What is something every fisherman needs?
Every angler needs the basics: a licence where one is required, line, hooks, pliers, a way to land the fish, sun protection and something to keep the day's gear dry. Those are better chosen by the angler. A gift works best on top of that list, not instead of it. Open-ear camera sunglasses do not replace any of it; they add hands-free photos and audio.
What to get someone who goes fishing who has everything?
Someone who owns every lure may still be taking the photo of the catch on a phone with wet hands. Camera sunglasses fix that moment: a touch on the temple captures what the angler is looking at, and open-ear speakers play a podcast or a call while the ears stay open to the water. If he wears prescription glasses all day, choose something else, because no OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses.
What are some quirky fishing gifts I can give?
Quirky gifts are mostly about the giver's sense of humour: novelty lures, fish-themed mugs, personalised signs and the like. They get a laugh and are low risk. If you want something that will actually go on the next trip, a practical gift is a safer bet, whether that is a fillet knife, a guided day, or a pair of camera sunglasses that records the catch without the phone leaving the pocket.
Are these good gifts for fly fishermen?
They can be, with limits. A fly angler has both hands on rod and line, so a touch on the temple to start a clip of the take or the release is useful, and open-ear audio leaves the river audible. But no OXIVUE lens is sold as polarised, which matters for sight fishing, and no frame is rated for submersion. Wading anglers who lean over the water should add a retainer cord.
Can these glasses go in the water or float?
No. The M02C is rated IP65, which covers dust and water jets such as spray and rain, not immersion, and it is not for saltwater use. The M08 has no published water rating. None of our frames is sold as floating, so if a pair goes over the side, assume it is gone. A retainer cord that fits the temples is a sensible addition.
Can I bring camera glasses to a fishing tournament or club water?
Check first. Tournaments, clubs, charter operators and private waters can set their own rules on cameras and audio devices, and those rules change, so read the current rules for the event or venue rather than relying on a general answer. Recording other people is a separate question: ask before filming people up close, and recording conversations may require consent where the law requires it.
When should I order for Christmas, and what if it arrives damaged?
US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days and international orders in 9 to 14 business days after shipment, so leave that margin before the date. Shipping is free from $99. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable.
What these frames won’t do
- No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
- No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
- Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
- Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
- M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
- M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
