Gifts for boaters who already own the gear

Most gift lists for boaters are boat accessories, and a boat owner has usually chosen those already. This guide looks at the moments on a boat day that still go badly, explains where a pair of camera sunglasses helps, and says plainly what spray, saltwater and the water itself can do to them.

1. What a boat owner actually wants

When we checked the US results for this search on October 9, 2026, the top pages were gift pages from boating brands and marine retailers, a sailing magazine’s list, Pinterest boards and a boat club’s guide to gifts for the crew. They are useful for browsing accessories. The problem for a giver is that most boat gear is chosen to fit one particular boat: the cleats, the fenders, the electronics, the cover. Someone who has owned a boat for a few seasons has made those choices already, and a well-meant accessory can easily be the wrong size or the wrong fit.

A better question is what still goes wrong on a good day out. For many owners it is the photos. The best moments on a boat, the crew at the swim spot, a heron lifting off the shoreline, the sunset on the way back to the ramp, happen while their hands are busy with lines, a cooler or a child, and the phone is in a dry bag. Getting it out with wet hands over open water is exactly how phones end up at the bottom of a lake. A gift that helps with that moment adds to the boat day without asking the owner to replace anything.

2. Where camera sunglasses help on a boat day

Camera sunglasses put the camera in the frame corner, at eye level. On OXIVUE frames a photo or a short clip starts with a deliberate touch on the temple, and nothing records unless the wearer starts it. So the owner can tie up at the dock, look at the crew climbing out and tap once. The picture shows what they were looking at, from where they were standing, and the phone never leaves its dry bag.

  • Tied up or at anchor. This is where the camera earns its place: photos of the swim spot, the raft-up, the picnic on deck, taken without stopping what you are doing.
  • Music without earbuds. Open-ear speakers in the temples point sound toward the ear without sealing it, so a playlist plays while the owner still hears the engine, the radio and the people on board.
  • Calls at the dock. Microphones in the frame let the owner take a call from the marina or a friend running late without digging out the phone.
  • Files on the phone later. Photos and clips land on the phone through the free HeyCyan app. There is no display; nothing appears in view.

The trade-offs are real. Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume, and with the engine running or wind across the water they will not compete with sealed earbuds. The assistant and translation need the phone nearby and connected, which may not hold on remote water.

3. M02C ($109 at checkout): the pair for spray

The M02C is the pair we would give a boat owner. It is listed at $159 and costs $109 at checkout as a single pair, which also clears the free-shipping threshold. Its reason to be on a boat is the IP65 rating: dust-tight and protected against water jets, so spray off the bow and a passing shower are covered. It is not a rating for immersion, and it is not for saltwater use.

Prices checked 2026-10-09; checkout price may change. If you are buying for a couple who boat together, two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear, so two M02C come to $159.

The dual stabilisation helps when the boat is moving under a passenger’s feet, and at about 41 g the frame is the lightest of our camera frames. Why not the lower-priced M08 at $99? It has no published water rating, and a boat is the place you are most likely to meet spray. For a boater, the extra $10 buys the rating.

4. What they cannot do on the water

A boating gift that ends up on the lake bed is a bad gift, so these limits come before the purchase, not after.

  • They do not float. No OXIVUE frame is sold as floating. If a pair goes overboard, it is lost. A retainer strap that fits the temples keeps it on the wearer’s neck when it comes off the face. We do not sell one; any strap that grips the temple ends securely will do.
  • No immersion. IP65 covers water jets, not submersion. Take them off before swimming, tubing, wakeboarding or jumping off the swim platform.
  • Not for saltwater. The M02C is not for saltwater use. That makes it a gift for lake, river and freshwater boaters first. A sailor who spends long days in salt spray should get something else; our guide to smart glasses for water sports explains where water ratings stop.
  • Not polarised, and not safety gear. We do not sell a polarised lens on any model, and no impact rating is published. A boater who relies on polarised glasses to read the water should keep them for that.
  • Battery. Listening is rated at 7 hours, so a dawn-to-dusk day with music running throughout will need a top-up between outings.

5. At the helm: a word on attention

The person driving the boat has a job that needs their full attention: other boats, swimmers, wake, markers and the shoreline. We would not suggest the skipper film while underway. The camera is for a passenger, or for when the boat is tied up, anchored or drifting with the engine off. Low-volume music through open-ear speakers is the realistic use at the helm, and only if it does not get in the way of hearing other boats, the radio or a shout from the bow.

Rules on operator attention and electronic devices vary by state and waterway, so check the rules where the boat is used. For the same reason, if the owner fishes from the boat, our smart glasses for fishing guide covers that use in more detail.

6. Honest non-glasses gifts for boaters

We sell glasses, so here we point elsewhere. Some boaters are better served by something else, and the categories below are common, practical alternatives. We do not name brands or quote prices; the point is to match the gift to the person.

Dry bag or waterproof phone caseKeeps the phone, keys and wallet dry on boardNot exciting

7. Before you buy for a boater

  • Prescription glasses. No OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses. If the boater needs correction all day, choose a gift from the table above.
  • Fresh or salt water. Ask, or check where the boat is kept. The M02C suits fresh water; it is not for saltwater use.
  • The phone comes along. Photos and clips sync through the free HeyCyan app, which also runs the assistant and translation in 40+ languages. HeyCyan does not need a Meta, Facebook or Instagram account.
  • Marina, club and charter rules. Marinas, yacht clubs, boat clubs, charter operators and regattas may restrict cameras or audio devices. Check the current rules of the venue or event before relying on them there.
  • Other people. Capture starts with a visible touch on the temple. Ask before filming people up close, and recording conversations may require consent where the law requires it; our recording laws by state guide has more. This is general information, not legal advice.
  • Timing. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days and international orders in 9–14 business days after shipment. Outside the US, import VAT and duties are paid by the recipient on delivery.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. See the shipping policy, the refund policy and the warranty. None of our frames take prescription lenses.

Frequently asked questions

What is a unique gift for a boater?

A gift that adds something new to a boat day, rather than one more accessory the owner already has, tends to land best. Camera sunglasses are one option: the OXIVUE M02C ($109 at checkout) takes an eye-level photo or clip with a touch on the temple and plays music or calls through open-ear speakers. It is rated IP65 for spray and rain, not immersion, and it does not float, so pair it with a retainer strap.

What do you get a boat owner who has everything?

Boat owners who have everything usually have the gear they chose themselves: lines, fenders, cleaning kit, electronics. Look instead at the moments that still go badly, such as taking a photo of the crew with wet hands, or juggling a phone for a call at the dock. Camera sunglasses address both. If the owner wears prescription glasses all day, pick something else, because no OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses.

Are these good gifts for sailors?

It depends on the water. The M02C is rated IP65, which covers dust and water jets, but it is not for saltwater use. A sailor who spends days on the sea in salt spray is outside what the frame is rated for, so a different gift from the table on this page is the safer choice. For lake sailing, river cruising and day trips on fresh water, the M02C fits much better.

Are these good gifts for lake lovers?

Lake days are where the M02C fits best. The water is fresh, the pace is slow, and there is time for photos of the crew, the swim spot and the sunset from the boat, taken hands-free with a touch on the temple. Open-ear audio plays music without sealing the ears. Keep the glasses out of the water itself: they are rated for spray and rain, not for swimming.

Can the glasses get wet or go in the water?

The M02C is rated IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets, so spray off the bow and a passing shower are covered. It is not rated for immersion, so it should not be worn swimming, tubing or wakeboarding, and it is not for saltwater use. No OXIVUE frame is sold as floating. If a pair goes overboard, assume it is gone; a retainer strap that fits the temples is a sensible add-on.

Can the skipper film while driving the boat?

We would not plan on it. Whoever is at the helm has a job that needs full attention, and the camera is better left to a passenger or to moments when the boat is tied up or at anchor. Boating rules on electronic devices and operator attention vary by state and waterway, so check the rules where you boat. Audio for music at low volume is the realistic use underway.

Can I bring camera glasses to a marina, yacht club or boat club?

Usually, but check first. Marinas, yacht clubs, boat clubs, charter operators and regattas can set their own rules on cameras and audio devices, and those rules change, so read the current rules for the venue or event. Recording people is a separate question: ask before filming people up close, and recording conversations may require consent where the law requires it.

When should I order before a holiday, and what if it arrives damaged?

US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days and international orders in 9 to 14 business days after shipment, so leave that margin before the date. Shipping is free from $99. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
