Festival sunglasses with a camera: what to check before you pack them

Festival sunglasses are usually picked for the look. A camera pair is a different purchase: it costs more, it counts as a camera at the gate, and it has to survive dust, heat and long days. This guide covers festival camera rules, what IP65 means on a dusty field, audio between sets, and filming the people around you.

1. Check the festival’s camera policy first

Camera sunglasses are a camera, and festival entry rules decide whether they come in. The rules vary and rarely mention smart glasses by name, so read the festival’s own FAQ and allowed-items list before you buy anything for the trip. Two published examples, checked October 19, 2026:

  • Coachella. Its FAQ says professional cameras “such as DSLRs, bridge cameras or any devices with detachable lenses are not allowed” and that “cameras can be refused at security discretion upon entry.” Phones, point-and-shoots, disposables and Polaroids are allowed, and so are GoPros without poles or extenders. The not-allowed list also includes video cameras and audio recording devices. Sunglasses are allowed; camera glasses are not named either way.
  • EDC Las Vegas. Its FAQ says photo passes are not required “for standard cameras with fixed, non-detachable lenses or handheld video devices measuring less than 6 inches,” and that professional cameras are not permitted. The camera answer does not mention smart or camera glasses.

The practical rule: if the festival bans video recording devices, leave the camera pair at home or bring an ordinary pair as well. If the policy is unclear, email the festival before you travel, and at the gate do what security asks. A camera pair that is refused at entry is worse than no camera pair at all.

2. What festival sunglasses actually need to do

A festival day is long, bright and on your feet, and you will be wearing whatever you pick for ten hours or more. Whether the pair has a camera or not, a few checks matter:

  • Stay on. You will be dancing, queuing and sitting on the ground. A frame that slips is a frame you lose. A cord or strap is cheap insurance.
  • Weight over a whole day. The OXIVUE M02C is about 41 g and the M08 about 42 g. Try any pair on for an afternoon before the festival, not just in a mirror.
  • Day and night. A dark lens suits the afternoon sets; after sunset it makes footing and faces harder to see. Plan for the evening as well as the noon sun.
  • Dust and rain. Outdoor sites are dusty when dry and muddy when wet. For anything with electronics, look for a published IP rating.
  • What you can afford to lose. Festival sunglasses go missing. A camera pair is a bigger loss than a novelty frame, so bring a case or pouch of your own; none comes in the box.

If all you want is the look, a novelty frame does that job and nothing here will change your mind. A camera pair earns its place when you want to keep the moment without holding a phone up for the whole set, and when you would like music and calls in the queue without earbuds blocking out your friends. Those are the two jobs the rest of this guide is about, along with the limits that come with them.

3. Rave frames vs everyday sunglasses vs camera sunglasses

The shopping results for festival sunglasses are mostly novelty and fashion frames. Camera sunglasses sit in a different category. The table compares the three as categories; we do not quote any other brand’s prices, because they vary by retailer and style.

PriceVaries by retailerVaries by retailer$109 (M02C) or $99 (M08) at checkout

Prices checked 2026-10-19; checkout price may change. The M02C is listed at $159 and the M08 at $149; a single pair settles at $109 and $99 at checkout. Two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear, so two M08 come to $149 if you are going with a friend. OXIVUE publishes this guide, so treat our picks as one option, not a ranking.

4. M02C ($109 at checkout): dust and long days

The M02C is rated IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets, which covers a dusty field and a passing shower. It is not rated for immersion, so no swimming, pools or saltwater. The rating covers the electronics, not your eyes.

  • Camera. A Sony IMX219 8 MP sensor with dual stabilisation, which helps when you are walking between stages. A capture starts only when you touch the temple.
  • Audio. Open-ear speakers rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls, so you can play a playlist in a queue or find friends on a call without earbuds.
  • Lenses. Sunglasses, photochromic or clear. For a weekend of day and night sets, decide which matters more before you order.
  • Extras. About 41 g, magnetic charging, and “Hey Cyan” visual AI that can describe what you are looking at through the phone app.

5. M08 ($99 at checkout): the simpler camera pair

The M08 is $10 less than the M02C and does the core job: an 8 MP camera set in the frame corner, open-ear speakers rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls, and the same sunglasses, photochromic or clear lens choices. It weighs about 42 g.

The difference that matters at a festival: the M08 has no published water or dust rating. On a dry, dusty site or a rainy weekend, keep it in a case or pouch of your own (none is included) when you are not wearing it, or choose the M02C. Our camera sunglasses buying guide compares lens, weight and battery across every model in more detail.

6. Between sets: audio, files and charging

Seven hours of listening is the rated figure on both frames; photos and clips draw on the same battery, so a day of music plus captures will come in under it.

  • Charging. Pack the charging cable and top up between days. Keep your phone charged too, because the files and the app live there.
  • Getting files off. There is no display. Photos and clips go to the free HeyCyan app on your phone; sort and share them back at the tent or hotel.
  • Open-ear audio. You still hear the people around you, which is the point at a festival. On a loud stage, the music will win; use the speakers in queues, at camp and on the walk between stages.
  • International festivals. The HeyCyan app can translate 40+ languages. The translated audio is heard only by you, the other person reads the reply on your phone, and it needs your phone and a data connection. Our travel guide covers this in more depth.

Indoor shows are a different problem: dark rooms, venue rules and the person behind you. For those, read camera glasses for concerts.

A festival is a crowd of people who did not agree to be in your video. Film the stage, the sunset and your own group, and ask before you point the camera at anyone else, especially up close. If someone asks you to stop or delete a clip, do it. Audio is the legally sensitive part: some US states require everyone in a private conversation to agree to being recorded. Our smart glasses recording laws by state guide goes through the rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days after shipment, and outside the US import VAT or duties are paid by the recipient on delivery. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Compare every model on the comparison page.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best sunglasses for festivals?

There is no single best pair; it depends on what you want them to do. For looks alone, novelty rave frames are cheap and easy to replace. If you also want hands-free photos and music between sets, camera sunglasses do more: the OXIVUE M02C is $109 at checkout with an IP65 rating for dust and water jets, and the M08 is $99. Check the festival's camera policy before you pack either.

What are rave sunglasses called?

Usually just rave glasses or festival glasses. The styles that fill the shopping results are oversized shields, wraparound and panoramic frames, small round and Y2K shapes, and diffraction or rainbow-effect lenses. They are bought for the look. Camera sunglasses are a different category: an ordinary-looking frame with a camera, microphones and open-ear speakers built into it.

Is it appropriate to wear sunglasses to a rave?

Yes, sunglasses are common at raves and festivals, and Coachella lists sunglasses as an allowed item (checked October 19, 2026). For a daytime set a tinted lens suits; once it is dark, a tinted lens makes it harder to see your footing and your friends. If you want camera glasses for night sets, the OXIVUE M08 and M02C both come with a Clear lens option.

Are camera glasses allowed at music festivals?

It depends on the festival, and the rules rarely name smart glasses. Coachella's FAQ allows GoPros and phones but lists video cameras and audio recording devices as not allowed, and says cameras can be refused at security's discretion. EDC Las Vegas allows standard cameras with fixed lenses. Read the festival's own list, ask if it is unclear, and follow staff instructions at the gate.

Can camera sunglasses handle festival dust?

The OXIVUE M02C can: it is rated IP65, which means dust-tight and protected against water jets, though not immersion. The M08 has no published water or dust rating, so on a dusty desert site keep it in a case or pouch of your own when you are not wearing it. Neither rating is an eye-protection rating; IP covers the electronics only.

How long does the battery last at a festival?

7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls on both the M08 and the M02C. Photos and clips use the battery too, so a full day of music plus captures will not reach the listening figure. Pack the charging cable, top up between days, and keep your phone charged, because the files and the app live on it.

Do camera sunglasses work without a phone?

Partly. Music, calls, translation and the assistant all need your phone nearby and connected over Bluetooth, and translation also needs a data connection. Photos and clips start only with a touch on the temple, and you need the free HeyCyan app on your phone to pair the glasses and get the files off them. There is no display in the lens.

How fast do they ship, and what if something goes wrong?

US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days and international orders in 9 to 14 business days after shipment, with free shipping from $99, so every single pair qualifies. OXIVUE does not offer refunds; the exception is an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. A fault after delivery is covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
