Camera glasses that connect to your phone: what each link actually does.

Every camera-and-audio pair in this price range leans on a phone. The useful question before buying is which jobs travel over Bluetooth, which need the app, and what still works when the phone is in a bag or out of range. This guide answers that, then shows how a clip gets from the frame to your camera roll.

1. The two links: Bluetooth and the app

“Connects to your phone” on a product listing hides two different connections, and they do different jobs. Knowing which is which tells you what you are buying.

  • Bluetooth 5.4: the always-on audio link.Every in-stock OXIVUE frame uses it. It carries music and podcasts from the phone to the open-ear speakers, your calls in both directions, and the assistant’s voice. To the phone, the glasses look like a headset.
  • The HeyCyan app: everything else. You pair the glasses from inside the free app rather than from the phone’s Bluetooth menu. The app is where photos and video are imported, where translation and the AI assistant run, and where firmware updates come from. Expect to sign in to it; that is a HeyCyan login, not a Meta or social-media account, and there is no subscription.

Phone support, as our support page states it: iOS 14 or later and Android 9 or later, over Bluetooth 5.4. Translation and the assistant also need a data or Wi-Fi connection on the phone, because they run through the app and a cloud model. For a fuller look at the app itself, its permissions and its ratings, see the HeyCyan smart glasses guide.

2. What each model does over the link

The four frames share Bluetooth 5.4, an 8 MP camera and open-ear audio. They differ in what happens to a capture before it reaches the phone. Only the M14 lists onboard memory and Wi-Fi file transfer in its specifications, so this table does not assume either for the other three.

The M08 on a full-tint sun lens is the simplest way to get a phone-linked camera for a hike, a drive or a day on the water. The M02C does the same job with an IP65 rating and the visual assistant. The M14 is the one built for a phone that stays zipped in a jersey or a ski jacket.

3. When the phone is out of range

Bluetooth is a short-range link, and we do not publish a range figure for these frames. Treat it as the same room or the same pocket, not the next floor. When the link drops, this is what changes:

  • Stops on every model: music, calls, translation and the assistant. All of them travel through the phone, so they come back when it reconnects.
  • Keeps working on the M14: capture. Photos and 1080p clips save to its 4 GB of onboard memory, and you import them later, over Wi-Fi or through the app.
  • On the M08, M02C and M08C: no onboard-memory figure is published, so plan on keeping the phone paired and nearby whenever you want to capture.

4. Getting footage into your camera roll

The step most people miss: captures do not appear in your phone’s photo library on their own. They move only when you import them through the app.

  1. Take the photo or clip with a touch on the temple.
  2. Open HeyCyan with the glasses connected, and go to the gallery.
  3. Import the captures you want. On the M14, the transfer can run over Wi-Fi.
  4. Save or share them from the app to your photo library.

iPhone fix: imported clips never reach Photos. This is almost always a permission. Open Settings, find HeyCyan (under Apps on recent iOS versions), tap Photosand allow access. Then import again from the app’s gallery. On Android, check the app’s photos and media permission in Settings → Apps → HeyCyan → Permissions.

A note on translation while you are in the app: translated speech is heard only by the wearer, through the open-ear speakers. The app shows both sides as text, so you can turn the screen towards the other person.

5. Purchase check: five questions before you buy

  1. Is my phone supported? iOS 14+ or Android 9+ for OXIVUE frames.
  2. Will the phone often be out of reach? If yes, the M14’s onboard memory is the deciding feature.
  3. Am I fine signing in to a free app? HeyCyan asks for a login. It is not a Meta account and there is no subscription.
  4. Will I translate abroad? Then the phone needs data or Wi-Fi there.
  5. Do I need prescription lenses? No OXIVUE frame supports them.

Frequently asked questions

How do camera glasses connect to a phone?

Two ways at once. Bluetooth 5.4 is the always-on link: it carries music, calls and the assistant's voice between the phone and the open-ear speakers. The free HeyCyan app is the second layer: you pair the glasses inside it, and it handles importing photos and video, translation, the AI assistant and firmware updates. All four in-stock OXIVUE frames work this way, from the M08 at $149 to the M14 at $199.

What are the best camera glasses for phones?

Pick by what you will do with the phone link most. For hiking, driving or fishing, the M08 at $149 on a full-tint sun lens is the simplest way in. The M02C at $159 adds an IP65 rating and the 'Hey Cyan' visual assistant. The M14 at $199 is the one to choose if the phone will often be zipped away: it has 4 GB of onboard memory and Wi-Fi file transfer. For meetings and the golf course, the M08C at $169 adds gold or silver metal trim.

Do I need an app for camera glasses?

Yes. Bluetooth audio pairs like any headset, but photos, video import, translation, the assistant and firmware updates all run through the HeyCyan app. Expect to sign in to it: the app's privacy policy describes registering with an email address or phone number. That is a HeyCyan login, not a Meta or social-media account.

Do you have to pay a monthly fee to use camera glasses?

Not with OXIVUE. The HeyCyan app is free, and neither app store lists in-app purchases for it, so there is nothing recurring to pay for pairing, importing, translation or the assistant. You do need mobile data or Wi-Fi on the phone for translation and the assistant, which is whatever your phone plan already costs.

Are camera glasses compatible with iPhone and Android?

OXIVUE frames work with iOS 14 or later and Android 9 or later over Bluetooth 5.4, as stated on our support page. The companion app is required for translation, the AI voice assistant and firmware updates on both platforms.

What happens when my phone is out of range?

Audio, calls, translation and the assistant stop, because they all travel through the phone. On the M14 you can keep capturing: photos and 1080p clips save to its 4 GB of onboard memory and import later. The M08, M02C and M08C do not publish an onboard-memory figure, so keep the phone paired and nearby when you want to capture on those frames.

Why don't my videos show up in my iPhone camera roll?

Usually because HeyCyan does not have permission to save to Photos. Open Settings, find HeyCyan (under Apps on recent iOS versions), tap Photos and allow access. Then import again from the app's gallery with the glasses connected. Captures do not move to Photos on their own; they arrive only when you import them through the app.

Can the other person hear the translation?

No. Translated speech plays through the open-ear speakers and is heard only by the wearer. The app shows both sides of the conversation as text on your phone, so you can turn the screen towards the other person. It needs the phone with you and a data or Wi-Fi connection.

Are hidden camera glasses legal to use?

Camera glasses are legal to own and wear in the US, but how you use them is not unlimited. Silent video in public is generally lawful; audio is the stricter half, because state wiretap laws cover it and roughly a dozen states require everyone's consent to record a private conversation. Private property, workplaces and venues can set their own rules. Our recording-laws guide covers the state-by-state split.

Can I wear prescription lenses in them?

No. None of the OXIVUE frames support prescription lenses. The M08, M02C and M08C come with a sun, photochromic or clear lens, and the M14 has a fixed one-piece shield in four colourways.

How fast do they ship, and what is the warranty?

US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days and international orders in 9–14 business days, with free shipping from $99. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults are covered by a 2-year warranty, handled by repair or replacement.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
  • M14: one-piece shield, so the lens can't be swapped for clear or photochromic.
  • M14: IPX4 covers splash, spray and rain only, and at 52 g it is heavier than the 41–42 g frames.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
