Smart glasses for construction, and where they stop.

Search this and you get industrial display headsets, forum threads and marketplace listings. This guide is narrower: what a camera-and-audio frame actually helps with on a job site, the hard limits that come first, and which of our frames suits outdoor work.

1. The limits, first

  • Not safety glasses. No OXIVUE frame is rated to ANSI Z87.1. OSHA’s construction eye-protection rule (29 CFR 1926.102, checked 2026-10-05) requires appropriate eye protection where there are hazards such as flying particles, and points to the Z87.1 standard for those devices. On any site or task that mandates safety glasses, these cannot be worn instead.
  • Not hearing protection. The speakers are open-ear, so nothing sits in or over your ear canal. That keeps horns and shouted warnings audible, but it does nothing against saw, compressor or demolition noise. Wear your plugs or muffs as required.
  • No display. Nothing is projected in front of your eyes: no drawings, no checklists, no overlays. Anything visual happens on your phone.
  • No prescription lenses on any model.

That leaves a real but bounded role: the parts of the job where eye protection is not required, such as site walks, estimating visits, client and inspector walkthroughs, punch lists, supervision outside the hazard zone, and the drive between jobs.

2. What they help with on site

TaskHow the glasses helpWatch out for
Progress and condition photosA touch on the temple takes an 8 MP photo from eye level, hands still on the tape or the ladder railPhotos land in the phone app; label them there for the daily log
Walkthrough clipsShort first-person clips of a punch-list item, a defect or an install, shot as you point at itPeople in frame; see the recording note below

The pattern is the same one home inspectors use: capture first, write up later. Our smart glasses for home inspectors guide goes deeper on photo workflow, and smart glasses for warehouse workers covers the similar PPE question on a warehouse floor.

3. Which frame for outdoor work

Prices below are what you pay at checkout for a single pair; the first-pair offer is applied automatically. Prices checked 2026-10-05; checkout price may change. Two or more pairs are 50% off all eyewear, so two M08 come to $149 in total, which helps if a foreman and a super both want a pair.

Choose the M02C if you are out in dust, drizzle or spray. Of the two frames compared here, only the M02C has a dust rating, which matters on a site more than anywhere else. Choose the M08 with the full-tint sun lens if you mostly need photos and calls on dry days and want the lowest price; it is rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls. For estimators and project managers who spend as much time in the office and in client meetings as on site, the M08C ($119 at checkout, gold or silver trim, meeting transcription in the app) is the business-side frame, also with no published water rating.

4. Consumer glasses vs industrial headsets

Much of what ranks for this search is industrial: headsets with a small display, built for remote expert calls and step-by-step work instructions. They are a different class of product, and it helps to know which one your problem needs.

If you need to see plans hands-free, a camera-and-audio frame will not do it. If you need fast photos and calls without a company IT project, it may be all you need. See the best smart glasses for work for other trades and office use.

5. Translation for mixed-language crews

Translation runs through the free HeyCyan app on your phone, and it needs the phone with you and a connection. You hear the translation through the open-ear speakers, and only you hear it. The person you are talking to reads the reply on your phone screen. It suits quick questions and coordination, such as where materials go, what time the pour is, or whether a delivery arrived.

  • The M08 family is listed at 40+ languages, but no language list is published, so we do not claim support for any specific pair, including English and Spanish. Test the languages your crew actually speaks on your own pair on day one.
  • Site noise affects any microphone. Step away from running equipment for anything longer than a sentence or two.
  • Do not use machine translation for safety briefings, lockout instructions or anything where a mistranslation could hurt someone. Use a bilingual lead or written materials for that.

6. Recording on a job site

Recording people may require their consent, depending on your state and your company’s or the site’s policy. Audio recording falls under state wiretap rules, and some states require everyone in a private conversation to agree. Owners and general contractors may also restrict cameras on their sites. Tell the people around you that the glasses can record, keep the lens on the work, and check smart glasses recording laws by state before you film anyone.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free US shipping on orders of $99 or more, so any single pair qualifies. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best AI glasses for construction?

It depends on whether your site requires certified safety eyewear. No OXIVUE frame is ANSI Z87.1-rated, so on sites that mandate safety glasses they cannot be worn in their place. Where eye protection is not required, such as walkthroughs, estimating visits, punch lists and supervision outside the hazard zone, the M02C at $109 at checkout is our pick for outdoor work because it is IP65-rated and has visual AI. The M08 sun lens at $99 at checkout is the lower-cost option for dry days. Prices checked 2026-10-05; checkout price may change.

Is it legal to wear smart glasses at work?

Wearing them is generally a matter of your employer's policy and the site's PPE rules rather than law. Recording is where law applies: audio recording falls under state wiretap rules, and some states require every party in a private conversation to consent. Tell the people around you that the glasses can record, follow your company and site policy on cameras, and keep the lens on the work rather than on people. Our recording-laws guide covers the state differences.

What are the best glasses for construction workers?

For eye protection, the right glasses are safety glasses or goggles marked to ANSI Z87.1, the standard OSHA's construction eye-protection rule references. Smart glasses from OXIVUE are not that, and nothing about the camera or audio changes it. Use certified safety eyewear wherever the work calls for it, and treat smart glasses as a tool for the parts of the job where eye protection is not required.

Do smart glasses actually work on a job site?

The simple functions work well: a touch on the temple takes an 8 MP photo or starts a clip, open-ear speakers carry calls and music while you can still hear what is around you, and microphones pick up your voice. What they do not do on a site: protect your eyes from impact, protect your hearing, or show anything in front of you, because there is no display. Loud machinery will also make calls and voice commands harder.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of smart glasses for construction?

Benefits: photos and short walkthrough clips without putting down tools or pulling out a phone, calls with both hands busy, and translation through the phone app for crews that speak different languages (no language list is published, so test your language pair first). Drawbacks: they are not safety-rated, open-ear audio is not hearing protection, there is no display, they take no prescription lenses, and recording people brings consent questions. They are a capture-and-communicate tool, not PPE.

Can I wear them over or under my safety glasses?

We do not recommend stacking them. OXIVUE frames are not designed or tested to fit with safety eyewear, and anything that shifts certified protection out of position defeats its purpose. If your site requires safety glasses, wear those and leave the smart glasses for areas and tasks where eye protection is not required.

How does translation work with a mixed-language crew?

Translation runs through the free HeyCyan app on your phone, which needs a connection. You hear the translation through the open-ear speakers, and only you hear it. The other person reads the reply on your phone screen. The M08 family is listed at 40+ languages, but no language list is published, so we do not state that any particular pair, English and Spanish included, is supported. Test the languages your crew speaks on your own pair before relying on it, and never for safety instructions.

How fast do they ship, and what if something goes wrong?

US shipping is free on orders of $99 or more, so any single pair qualifies. US orders typically arrive in 5 to 9 business days and international orders in 9 to 14. OXIVUE does not offer refunds; the exception is an order that arrives damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. A fault after delivery is covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
