Gifts for your father-in-law: three questions before you buy
Buying gifts for a father in law is a small test with no right answer and a lot of polite smiling. The safest tech gift is the one you have checked against his eyesight, his phone and his weekends. This guide gives you that checklist first, then one matched pair of camera sunglasses, and it states our no-refund terms before you get to a price.

1. The three-question checklist
Three yes-or-no answers decide whether camera sunglasses are a safe gift for your father-in-law. Ask your partner, or his wife, before you order anything:
- Does he wear prescription glasses all day? If yes, stop here and choose a different gift. No OXIVUE frame takes prescription lenses. If he only uses readers for close-up work, he can still wear these outdoors.
- Does he use an iPhone or an Android phone, and is it reasonably current? Either works. The free HeyCyan app needs iOS 14+ or Android 9+, and it handles translation, the voice assistant and getting photos off the glasses. Music and calls run over Bluetooth 5.4.
- What does he do on a free Saturday? Golf or a smart office wardrobe points to the M08C. Driving, fishing, yard work or walking the dog points to the M08. Cycling or skiing is the only case for the M14, and its look is not for everyone.
If the answers are “no prescription, a current phone, and a hobby outdoors,” you have a gift that fits. If any answer is unclear, a gift tied to his hobby that does not depend on his eyes or his phone is the lower-risk choice. The rest of this guide explains each step.
2. The terms, before the price
OXIVUE does not offer refunds, and that matters more for a gift than for something you buy for yourself, because you are guessing his taste. In full: No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable.
In practice that means a pair he finds too dark, too sporty or simply not his style stays with him. That is why the checklist comes first and why this guide recommends one matched model rather than a pile of options. If you cannot answer the three questions, it is fine to close this page and buy him something else.
3. Match the frame to his hobby
Each OXIVUE frame has an 8 MP camera started by a touch on the temple, open-ear speakers and microphones, and no display. What differs is the look, the lens and the weight. The table shows how they line up with common hobbies.
| If he… | Pick | At checkout | Why | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plays golf, dresses smart for work | M08C | $119 | Gold or silver trim on Italian TR90; Sony IMX219 8 MP | No published water rating |
| Drives a lot, fishes, walks, does yard work | M08 | $99 | Plain TR90 frame, ~42 g, sun / photochromic / clear lens | No published water rating |
| Cycles or skis seriously | M14 | $149 | Wrap shield, IPX4 for splash and rain | 52 g; lens cannot be swapped; a sporty look |
| Wears prescription glasses all day | None of ours | — | — | No prescription lenses on any model |
Prices checked 2026-10-19; checkout price may change. Listed prices are M08 $149, M08C $169 and M14 $199; a single pair settles at the checkout prices above, and free shipping starts at $99, so every single pair qualifies. If you and your partner are buying for both fathers, two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear.
4. M08C ($119 at checkout): golf and the office
The M08C is the pick for a father-in-law who plays golf or dresses for the office. It is an Italian TR90 frame of about 42 g with a gold or silver metal trim, so it reads as a considered pair of glasses rather than a gadget. Inside are a Sony IMX219 8 MP camera, open-ear speakers rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls, and Bluetooth 5.4.
- Lens. It comes with a sun, photochromic or clear lens. Photochromic adapts to the light, which suits a day that moves from the car park to the course to the clubhouse. Clear suits a man who would wear them mostly indoors.
- Trim. Gold is the warmer look; silver is the quieter one. If you are not sure, match the metal of his watch.
- What it does not do. It gives no yardages, no shot tracking and no display. For that he needs a rangefinder or GPS device. Our gifts for golfers who have everything guide covers the golf case in detail.
If he films a swing or a moment with his playing partners, he should ask them first; some clubs also have their own rules on cameras.
5. M08 ($99 at checkout): driving, fishing, everyday
The M08 is the lower-cost pick: it is $99 at checkout as a single pair and looks like an ordinary pair of sunglasses on the Sunglasses lens. The 8 MP camera sits flush in the frame corner and only captures when he touches the temple. It weighs about 42 g and is rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls.
- For the drive. Open-ear audio plays calls and directions while he still hears the road. The camera is for when he is parked or on foot.
- For the lake or the yard. A photo of a catch or a grandchild taken with a touch, while his hands are busy, is the realistic use.
- Water. The M08 has no published water rating, so it should stay out of heavy rain and spray. If he is out in all weather, see the M02C, which is rated IP65 (not for immersion) and is $109 at checkout.
Our tech gifts for dad guide uses the same hobby-first approach if you are also buying for your own father.
6. M14 ($149 at checkout): the wrap look, and why it is not for everyone
The M14 is a one-piece wrap shield built for cycling and skiing, and its look is the main reason to be cautious with it as a gift. It weighs 52 g, is rated IPX4 for splash and rain, plays 4 hours of audio and 7 hours of calls, and comes in four colourways: Nero, Azzurro, Ghiaccio and Tramonto.
The shield cannot be swapped for a clear or photochromic lens, so it is not a pair he would wear to dinner or the office. If your father-in-law rides most weekends or spends a week on the slopes every winter, it is the right frame. If you are only guessing that he might like a sporty look, the M08 or M08C is the safer gift, because with no refunds for change of mind a style he does not like stays in the drawer.
7. When to buy him something else
Camera sunglasses are the wrong gift in four situations, and saying so is part of making this a low-risk choice:
- He wears prescription glasses all day. None of our frames take prescription lenses.
- He wants a screen. There is no display; he hears answers and the photos go to his phone.
- He avoids phone apps. Music and calls work over Bluetooth, but translation and file transfer need the HeyCyan app.
- He would feel awkward wearing a camera. Some men do. Respect that rather than hoping he will change his mind.
In those cases, good alternatives come from other categories: a shared experience such as a round of golf or a fishing trip with you, a quality version of a tool he already uses every day, food or drink he enjoys, or something personalised from the family. Our smart glasses gift guide covers gifting the category in general, including how to choose a lens without asking him.
8. Christmas gifts for father-in-law: what to know before you order
Christmas gifts for father-in-law carry a little more pressure than most, so plan the delivery as carefully as the choice. US delivery is usually 5–9 business days (international 9–14 after shipment); we can’t guarantee arrival before December 25, so order early. US shipping covers the contiguous 48 states, not Alaska, Hawaii or US territories.
- If he lives abroad. We ship to Canada, the UK, all 27 EU states, Australia, Japan and more; see the shipping policy for the full list. Prices exclude import VAT and duties, which the recipient pays on delivery, so mention that in the card so it is not a surprise at his door.
- One for him, one for your own dad (or you). Two or more pairs of eyewear in one order are 50% off all eyewear at checkout; two M08 frames come to $149 in total, and an M08C and an M08 can be mixed.
- A gift receipt is not a refund route. As section 2 sets out, a pair that does not suit him cannot be sent back for a refund, which is why the three-question checklist comes first.
Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Compare every model on the comparison page.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good gift for my father-in-law?
A good one is something he would use every week but would not buy for himself. For many men that is a practical upgrade tied to a hobby: golf, fishing, driving, the garden. If he does not wear prescription glasses, camera sunglasses fit that description: the OXIVUE M08 is $99 at checkout and the gold- or silver-trim M08C is $119. If he does wear prescription glasses all day, choose something from his hobby instead.
What are good Christmas gifts for a father-in-law?
Three kinds tend to land: something for his hobby, an experience you share with him, or a quality version of something he already uses. If you choose OXIVUE glasses, US delivery is usually 5–9 business days (international 9–14 after shipment); we can't guarantee arrival before December 25, so order early. Outside the US, the recipient pays any import VAT or duties on delivery.
How do you impress a father-in-law with a gift?
Mostly by showing you paid attention. A gift that fits his actual hobby, his phone and his eyesight says more than an expensive one that does not. Ask your partner the three checklist questions in this guide before you buy anything. Write a short card that says why you chose it. And skip anything that asks him to learn a whole new habit unless he already enjoys gadgets.
Do OXIVUE glasses work with both iPhone and Android?
Yes. Music and calls connect over Bluetooth 5.4, and the free HeyCyan app runs on iOS 14+ or Android 9+. The app is needed for translation, the voice assistant and getting photos and clips off the glasses. There is no subscription. If he keeps an older phone than that, check its software version before you order, or choose a different gift.
Can he get prescription lenses in them?
No. None of the OXIVUE frames take prescription lenses, on any model. If your father-in-law needs vision correction all day, these cannot replace his glasses, and swapping between two pairs all day is a chore. That is the first question on the checklist for a reason. Reading glasses for close-up work only are a different case; he could still wear these outdoors when he does not need them.
Can I return them if he does not like them?
No. OXIVUE does not offer refunds for change of mind or for a gift that misses expectations. The exception is an order that arrives damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. A fault after delivery is covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. Because of that, run through the checklist before you buy, and pick a lens and style he would choose himself.
What do you get a father-in-law who has everything?
Often something that combines two things he already owns, or a shared experience. Camera sunglasses fall in the first group: many men own sunglasses and earbuds, fewer own a pair that plays audio open-ear and takes a photo with a touch on the temple. In the second group, a round of golf, a fishing trip or a meal together with you tends to mean more than another object.
What these frames won’t do
- No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
- No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
- Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
- Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
- M08C: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
- M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
