Gifts for car lovers, sorted by what he does with his car
Car people are not all the same. One spends Sunday morning with a bucket and a clay bar, another under the car, another on a back road, another at a shelf of scale models. This guide matches gift ideas to each, and has one section on camera sunglasses, which we make, including why they are not a dash cam.

1. Start with what he does with cars
The quickest way to choose a gift for a car lover is to watch one weekend: what he does with the car tells you what to buy. Car enthusiasm covers very different hobbies, and a gift aimed at the wrong one ends up in a drawer.
- Does he work on the car himself? Look at the garage. Gaps in a tool set are obvious; duplicates are a waste.
- What does he drive, and does he love that particular car? Gifts about one specific model (a book, a print, a scale model) land far better than generic car-themed items.
- Does he drive for fun? Back roads, road trips, track days and car meets point towards experiences and things for the drive.
Parts for a modified car are risky surprises: fitment depends on the exact model and year, so if that is what he wants, give a gift card to the shop he already uses.
2. Gift ideas by type of car lover
These are categories, not products, so you choose the budget and the shop. We do not quote other brands’ prices or specifications; check the listing of anything you pick.
The detailer
- A bundle of good microfibre towels and drying towels; they get used up.
- Refills of the wash, wax or sealant he already likes, rather than a new system.
- A professional detail or paint correction, booked for him, so he gets a day off.
The garage tinkerer
- A tool he has mentioned borrowing or not owning, such as a torque wrench or a socket set.
- A rechargeable work light or headlamp for under-car jobs.
- A creeper, a mechanic’s stool or garage storage that clears the bench.
- An OBD-II scanner, if his car is new enough for one and he does not already have it.
The driver and road-tripper
- A track day, a high-performance driving school or a driving experience.
- A planned road-trip weekend on a route he has talked about.
- A portable tyre inflator or a roadside kit for longer trips.
- Sunglasses for the drive, with or without a camera (see section 4). Our fall foliage drives guide has route ideas.
The collector and reader
- A book about one car, maker or race he loves.
- A print or commissioned artwork of his own car.
- A scale model of his car, or of the one he wants next.
- Tickets to a car museum, a motor show or a race weekend.
The car-show and meet regular
- A folding chair, a cooler and a sunshade for long days on a show field.
- A quick-detail spray and towels for touch-ups after the drive in.
- Entry or registration fees for a show or club event he has wanted to attend.
Everyday accessories for any car
If you just want something useful for the car itself, the accessories that tend to earn their place are simple: a phone mount that suits his car, a charging cable or charger for the dashboard, a seat-gap organiser or boot organiser, a set of all-weather floor mats sized for his model, and a small emergency kit with jump leads or a jump starter. Check the exact make, model and year before buying anything that has to fit.
Whichever car lover you are buying for, an experience is the gift least likely to be duplicated, and supplies he uses up are the gift least likely to be wrong.
3. Car-lover gift categories at a glance
The table pairs each gift category with the car lover it suits and the one thing to check first. Only the OXIVUE rows carry a price, because they are the only products we sell.
| Gift category | Suits | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Detailing supplies | The detailer | Which products he already uses |
| Tools and garage gear | The tinkerer | What is missing from his tool set |
| Track day or driving school | The driver | His calendar and the car he would bring |
| Book, print or scale model | The collector | The exact car, model and year |
| Dash cam | Anyone who wants road footage | Mounting and wiring in his car (we don’t sell these) |
| Camera sunglasses (OXIVUE M08) | Drivers who wear sunglasses; car-show visitors | No prescription need; $99 at checkout |
| Camera sunglasses (OXIVUE M02C) | Outdoor car shows in changeable weather | IP65, not immersion; $109 at checkout |
4. Camera sunglasses for the drive: the M08 ($99 at checkout)
The M08 is a pair of sunglasses with an 8 MP camera, open-ear speakers and microphones, $99 at checkout ($149 listed). It weighs about 42 g, connects over Bluetooth 5.4 and is rated for 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls. It comes with a sun, photochromic or clear lens.
- On the drive: audio only. Navigation prompts, music and hands-free calls through open-ear speakers, so he still hears the car and the traffic around him.
- Parked: the camera. At a car show, a cars-and-coffee meet or a scenic stop, a touch on the temple takes a photo or short clip of what he is looking at, while his hands stay free.
- Lens choice. The sun lens suits daytime drives. The photochromic lens darkens in UV light, which a windscreen largely blocks, so it stays light in the car. For night driving, choose the clear lens and never drive in a tinted lens after dark.
The M08 has no published water rating. For outdoor shows in rain, the M02C ($109 at checkout) is rated IP65, which covers water jets but not immersion, and uses a Sony IMX219 8 MP sensor with dual stabilisation. More on lens choice for the road in smart sunglasses for driving. OXIVUE publishes this page and sells the frames in it.
5. Driving safety and the law
Audio for directions and calls is the only thing to use while the car is moving; the camera is for when he is parked. Managing a camera or an app at the wheel is a distraction, whatever the device.
Rules on headphones, hands-free audio and devices while driving differ by state and country, and some places are strict about headphones at the wheel. Rather than summarise them here, read can you drive with smart glasses and check the rules where he drives. Recording other people, especially with audio, can require their consent depending on the location; our recording laws by state guide has more. This is general information, not legal advice.
6. What camera sunglasses won’t do
They are not a dash cam, have no display and take no prescription lenses. Those limits decide whether they suit him more than any spec does.
- Not a dash cam. Nothing records unless he starts it with a touch, and he should not do that while driving. For road footage, buy a dash cam.
- No display. No maps or alerts in his view; he hears directions instead. Photos and clips go to the HeyCyan app on his phone.
- Phone required. Calls, music, translation and the assistant need his phone nearby and connected.
- No prescription lenses on any model.
- Refunds. No refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. Full terms are on the return policy page.
7. Ordering a car-lover gift for Christmas
US delivery is usually 5–9 business days (international 9–14 after shipment); we can’t guarantee arrival before December 25, so order early. Shipping is free from $99, so every single pair ships free. Outside the US, prices exclude import VAT and duties, which the recipient pays on delivery. Details are on the shipping policy page.
If you share the road trips, two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear, so two M08 come to $149: one for him, one for you. For more ideas under that budget, see gifts for men under $100.
Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Compare every model on the comparison page.
Frequently asked questions
What do car lovers want as a gift?
Something that makes time with the car better. Look at how he spends that time: washing and detailing it, working on it in the garage, driving it on weekends or road trips, or collecting and reading about cars. A detailer wants supplies he will use up, a tinkerer wants tools he lacks, a driver wants an experience or a better drive, and a collector wants something about one particular car.
What is the 5 gift rule for men?
It is a family rule of thumb for keeping holiday gifts focused, and one common version is: something he wants, something he needs, something to wear, something to read and something to do. For a car lover that maps neatly: a part or tool he wants, detailing supplies he needs, sunglasses for the drive, a book about a car he loves, and a track day or driving experience to do.
What are good gifts for car guys under $100?
Plenty. Detailing supplies, quality microfibre towels, a good work light, a book or print about his car, or a scale model of it all usually fit. From us, the OXIVUE M08 camera sunglasses are $99 at checkout for one pair, with open-ear audio for navigation and calls on the drive. Check the listing of anything else for its current price.
Can camera glasses replace a dash cam?
No. A dash cam is mounted in the car and records the road automatically while he drives. Camera glasses record only when he touches the temple, and he should not be operating a camera while driving. If he wants footage of the road for accidents or insurance, buy a dash cam; we do not sell one, so we do not recommend a model.
Is it legal to wear smart glasses while driving?
It depends on where he drives. Wearing glasses is not the issue; using devices at the wheel is, and rules on headphones, hands-free audio and distraction differ by state and country. The safe habit is audio only while moving (navigation prompts and hands-free calls) with the camera left alone until he is parked. Our guide to driving with smart glasses covers the details.
Can he film cars at a car show or cars and coffee?
Usually, but check first. Many events welcome photos of the cars, while some venues or owners set their own rules. Photos of a car on display are different from recording people: ask before filming owners or other visitors, especially with audio, because consent rules vary by location. The camera starts only with a visible touch on the temple.
Will it arrive before Christmas?
We cannot promise it. US delivery is usually 5–9 business days (international 9–14 after shipment); we can't guarantee arrival before December 25, so order early. Shipping is free from $99, so every single pair ships free. Outside the US, import VAT and duties are paid by the recipient on delivery, which matters if the parcel is a surprise.
What if he doesn't like them?
There is no refund for that. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded; a fault after delivery is covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. Change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable, so check that he wears sunglasses to drive and does not need prescription lenses before you order.
What these frames won’t do
- No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
- No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
- Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
- Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
- M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
- M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.
Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
