Friendsgiving gift ideas: small for guests, thoughtful for the host.

Friendsgiving gift ideas fall into three jobs: something small to bring as a guest, something for the person who cooked, and something for the group exchange if you run one. Most of the right answers are inexpensive and consumable. This guide covers all three, plus the one case where a bigger shared gift makes sense, and says plainly where our own camera glasses fit (mostly, they don't).

1. Three kinds of Friendsgiving gift, and why they differ

A Friendsgiving usually needs three different kinds of gift, and mixing them up is how people overspend. A guest gift is what you carry through the door. A host gift thanks the person whose kitchen took the damage. An exchange gift is only needed if your group runs a swap or a name draw. Treating them as one list is how people end up unsure what to actually buy.

The rule of thumb that holds across all three: Friendsgiving is a potluck among friends, not a formal holiday. The gifts that land are small, useful on the day or the morning after, and easy to carry. Anything that needs explaining, charging or a long unwrapping belongs to a different occasion, with one exception covered in section 6.

2. Guest gifts: what to bring to a Friendsgiving

The first thing to bring is what the host asked for. Most Friendsgivings run on a shared list, and an unannounced fourth tray of stuffing helps nobody. After that, a small extra is welcome. Ideas that work at almost any table:

  • Something to drink, to share. A bottle of wine or cider, a sparkling non-alcoholic option for anyone not drinking, or a bag of ice, which every host runs out of.
  • Take-home containers. A stack of reusable or disposable containers so leftovers can leave with the guests. Hosts tend to remember this one.
  • Dessert or a breakfast item. A pie, a loaf of good bread, or something for the morning after, labelled with what is in it.
  • Flowers already in a vase. Loose flowers make the host stop cooking to find a vase. A small arrangement that can go straight on the table does not.
  • A card. A few handwritten lines cost almost nothing and are often the part people keep.

If you are going to several gatherings this season, consumables are also the easiest to scale: one batch of spiced nuts or cookies can be divided into jars for every host.

3. Friendsgiving host gift ideas

A good host gift asks nothing of the host on the day. The host is juggling an oven timetable and a full room, so the gifts that work are ones that can be set aside and enjoyed tomorrow.

  • For the morning after:good coffee or tea, jam, pancake mix, or pastries in a box marked “for tomorrow.”
  • For the kitchen: a quality dish towel, a wooden spoon, an oven mitt or a small bottle of olive oil. Practical, and a nod to the work they put in.
  • For the home: a candle with a mild scent (strong scents fight the food), a small plant, or a seasonal table piece they can keep using through December.
  • A bottle to keep. If you bring wine for the host rather than the table, say so, so they do not feel they have to open it.
  • Your time. Staying to wash up or taking the recycling out on your way is the host gift most hosts actually want.

If several guests want to do something more for a host who has hosted for years, that is where a shared gift comes in; see section 6.

4. Friendsgiving gift exchange ideas and rules

A gift exchange works when the format and price cap are set before anyone shops. Put both in the group chat, along with a theme if you want one, and decide early whether gift cards count. Three formats that suit a Friendsgiving:

  • Name draw. Everyone draws one name and buys for that person. It is the most personal, and it suits smaller groups who know each other well.
  • White elephant swap. Wrapped gifts go in the middle; people pick or steal in turn. It is louder and works with a bigger group or a mixed crowd.
  • Themed swap. Everyone brings a gift that fits one theme: homemade, something for a cold morning, a favourite book, or something under a set amount.

The “5 gift rule” that comes up in searches for adult gifting is usually framed as five categories: something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read and something to do. For an exchange it works better as a menu than a rule. Let each person draw one category, and the gifts stay varied instead of everyone arriving with a candle.

DIY gifts suit Friendsgiving because the whole meal is homemade: granola or spiced nuts in a jar, a spice blend with the recipe written on the label, frozen cookie dough to bake later, or a printed photo from last year’s gathering. Label anything edible with its ingredients so friends with allergies can check.

5. Friendsgiving gift ideas side by side

The table sorts the ideas above by who they are for and how much effort they ask of the recipient. Prices of other items vary by store, so we do not quote them; the only prices shown are our own.

Camera glasses (OXIVUE M08)Shared gift from several friendsMedium: phone app setup$99 at checkout for one; two pairs in one order $149

Prices checked 2026-10-20; checkout price may change. The M08 is listed at $149 and is $99 at checkout as a single pair; the M02C is listed at $159 and is $109 at checkout.

6. Going in on one bigger gift: where camera glasses fit

OXIVUE camera glasses are outside most Friendsgiving budgets, and we would not suggest them as a guest gift or an exchange gift. They fit one situation: a group of friends going in together on one bigger present, for a host who has cooked for years or a friend with a birthday near the holiday.

Here the arithmetic helps. Two or more pairs in one order are 50% off all eyewear, so two M08 pairs come to $149, and an M08 with an M02C comes to $154. Split between friends, that can cover a gift for two hosts who share a home, or one pair for the host and one for whoever organised the group. A single M08 is $99 at checkout, and shipping is free from $99, so every single pair qualifies.

  • What the M08 is. Sunglasses (or clear or photochromic lenses) with an 8 MP camera in the frame corner, open-ear speakers and microphones, about 42 g, rated 7 hours of listening and 4 hours of calls. A touch on the temple starts a photo or clip, which is handy for hands-free photos while cooking or carrying dishes. It has no published water rating.
  • What the M02C adds. An IP65rating (dust-tight, water jets, not immersion), a Sony IMX219 8 MP sensor with dual stabilisation, magnetic charging, about 41 g, and “Hey Cyan” visual AI that can describe what you are looking at.
  • What neither does. No display, no prescription lenses, and the camera, translation (40+ languages) and assistant work through the HeyCyan phone app, which does not need a Meta, Facebook or Instagram account. Translated audio is heard only by the wearer.

A shared gift carries a risk a candle does not: fit and taste. Someone who wears prescription glasses all day cannot use these without contact lenses, and the policy is strict: no refunds except transit damage (replaced or refunded); faults are repaired or replaced under the 2-year warranty; change of mind and unmet expectations are not refundable. Our smart glasses gift guide goes through the four things to settle first, and tech gifts under $100 has other ideas at a lower price.

7. Timing, limits and taking photos at the table

US delivery takes 5–9 business days; to have them by Thanksgiving, order by about November 13. Friendsgiving dates vary from group to group, so if yours is earlier, count back 5–9 business days from your own date. International orders take 9–14 business days after shipment, and outside the US the recipient pays any import VAT or duties on delivery. We ship to 39 countries, listed on the shipping policy.

If the glasses do end up at the table, ask before photographing or filming friends, and especially before capturing anyone’s children. Captures start with a visible touch on the temple, and nothing records unless the wearer starts it. A quick “mind if I take one of the table?” keeps the evening easy. For more ideas for the gadget-minded friend, see gifts for tech lovers.

Shipping, refunds and warranty. Free shipping from $99. US orders typically arrive in 5–9 business days; international orders take 9–14 business days. OXIVUE does not offer refunds except for an order damaged in transit, which is replaced or refunded. Faults after delivery are covered by the 2-year warranty through repair or replacement. None of our frames take prescription lenses. Compare every model on the comparison page.

Frequently asked questions

What are easy things to bring to a Friendsgiving?

Bring what the host asked for first, then one small extra. The easy wins are a dish you agreed on in advance, a drink to share, ice, a dessert, or a pack of take-home containers so leftovers can leave with guests. If you want to add a gift, keep it small and consumable: a jar of something homemade, a candle, or flowers already in a vase so the host does not have to stop and find one.

What is a good Friendsgiving hostess gift?

A good host gift is one the host does not have to handle during the meal. Flowers already arranged, a bottle to keep rather than open, something for breakfast the next morning, a nice dish towel, or a handwritten card all work. Offering to wash up or bringing the take-home containers is a gift too. Save anything that needs unwrapping, assembling or explaining for another day.

What is the 5 gift rule for adults?

The 5 gift rule is a way to cap gift-giving at five items, usually framed as something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read and something to do. For a Friendsgiving exchange, it works better as a menu than a rule: let each person draw one of the five categories, which keeps gifts varied and stops everyone buying the same candle.

How do you run a Friendsgiving gift exchange?

Agree the format and a price cap before anyone shops, and put both in the group chat so nobody overspends. A name draw (one giver, one receiver) keeps it personal; a white elephant swap is louder and works for bigger groups. A theme, such as something homemade or something for a cold morning, makes shopping quicker. Decide early whether gift cards count.

What are some fun DIY gifts for friends at Friendsgiving?

Homemade gifts suit Friendsgiving well because the whole meal is homemade. Spiced nuts or granola in a jar, a spice blend with a written recipe, cookie dough to bake later, infused salt, a printed group photo from last year, or a playlist card with a QR code all cost little and feel personal. Label anything edible with its ingredients so guests with allergies can check.

Are camera glasses a reasonable Friendsgiving gift?

Only as a shared gift, not a guest gift. One pair of OXIVUE M08 sunglasses is $99 at checkout, which is above most Friendsgiving budgets. It makes more sense when two or three friends go in together, or when one order covers two pairs: two M08 come to $149 because two or more pairs are 50% off all eyewear. None of the frames take prescription lenses.

Will camera glasses arrive in time for Friendsgiving?

Only if you order early enough. US delivery takes 5–9 business days; to have them by Thanksgiving, order by about November 13. If your Friendsgiving is earlier than Thanksgiving, count back 5–9 business days from your own date. International orders take 9–14 business days after shipment, and outside the US the recipient pays any import VAT or duties on delivery.

What these frames won’t do

  • No prescription lenses yet, on any model. If you need vision correction all day, these can't replace your glasses.
  • No display. Nothing appears in your view; you hear answers and capture photos and video.
  • Open-ear speakers leak some sound at high volume and won't block out a loud train or a windy road the way sealed earbuds do.
  • Translation, music, calls and the assistant need your phone nearby and connected. Translation pauses after each sentence, and only you hear the translated audio; the other person reads the reply on your phone.
  • M08: no published water rating, so keep it out of heavy rain and spray.
  • M02C: IP65 resists dust and water jets, not immersion. No swimming, no saltwater.

Check these before you order: see the warranty and refund policy.
