These are not body cameras. That distinction matters legally.

These are not body cameras. If footage might ever be evidence, you need a purpose-built body-worn camera and a written policy to go with it. Nothing in this guide changes that sentence.

Five legal checks, before any feature list

Security officers get this wrong more often than any other profession, so the checks come first. Work through them in order; if any one fails, the hardware question is moot.

• 1. Your employer’s written recording policy governs. Not what the device is capable of, not what a colleague does. Read it before you buy, not after.
• 2. Two-party consent.Many US states require every participant’s consent to record a conversation. On patrol you meet people who have consented to nothing — and the glasses cannot tell which state line you just walked across.
• 3. Expectation of privacy. Bathrooms, changing areas, medical rooms, residential interiors. Recording in these can be a criminal matter irrespective of your role or intent.
• 4. Posted notice at the site. Sites that permit recording usually require visible signage. If the signage is not there, assume recording is not authorised.
• 5. Evidence goes on a body camera, not on these.The moment footage might be evidence, the requirement changes from “a camera” to “chain of custody,” and consumer eyewear cannot meet it.

Four patrol use cases that hold up

1. Hands-free communication

Torch in one hand, door in the other, taking a call from the control room. Open-ear directional audio leaves your ear canal free — which matters twice over here, since you need ambient awareness and you may already have a radio earpiece in one ear. The two coexist. 2. Documentation after the fact

3. The public who don’t share your language
